Google announces Daydream VR on May 18th and announced compatible handsets would launch in fall 2016. Than 9 days later everyone picks up and runs with "news" that Daydream VR won't run on current hardware. How exactly is this news? I thought this was obvious.
If the Axon 7 is Daydream compatible then that means the minimum requirements for Daydream are going to be at least a SD820 and 6GB of RAM since the lower spec'ed version has equivalent specs as all the other flagships (S7, G5, and HTC 10). The only difference that we can see currently is more RAM on the high end model. That is if by current flagships Google means those phones.
My guess is that current devices only have 60 Hz displays, which could give users motion sickness. If Daydream launches with only a few supported phones, it could make OEMs source high refresh rate displays
Daydream won't be just for Nexuses, Google has partnered with 8 companies already. And if current flagships won't deliver the same experience, they won't get the certification, simple as that. It's for your own good.
As I understand it, the day dream headsets are similar to the Google cardboard. In order to function similarly to the gear VR (latency under 20ms) additional accelerometers will have to be built-in directly into the phones. It isn't only the processor and screen resolution that make a good VR experience!
It takes more than powerful SoC's for VR to happen. You need accurate sensors, responsive screen, and more. Plus, Google did mention in the keynote that the Daydream compatible phones will launch on fall 2016, so current phones not working is not news and its kind of expected.
reducing motion to photon latency is very hard to do and will certainly require HW changes such as removing buffers and making asynchronous time warp supported
I love the new ZTE AXON 7 because it has: Samsung display, HTC speakers, HTC metal unibody, and the huawei fingerprint sensor... It's like the smartphone frankystein!
The way I think about it is that it might be like the phone camera: starting out as a gimmick that not many phones had and now is the main selling point of a lot of smartphones
I have a feeling it's something to do with how Google wants to control OEM skins. They dont want Daydream to work on more heavier skins in a way as a punishment that the OEMs make a slow laggy skin? Just a thought
I would not buy a new phone just for daydream compatibility but then again I already expected that all current phones are not supported. The simple reason for it, they lack the hardware to track your motion well enough!
I think that if Daydream is only compatible with the next wave of flagships it's going to take a couple years to take off, as I don't see anyone changing their S7, Note 5, HTC 10 and others JUST in favor of a VR ecosystem
Well, as I understood them on the I/O main keynote, devices will run on highest possible CPU/GPU-Clock speed in Daydream mode. Maybe what they mean could be that devices like the S7/Edge would be better able to handle that work load. Samsung uses liquid cooling which would help to keep devices longer cool. Otherwise they would throttle to fast. And maybe they want a minimum battery life in Daydream mode. I doubt that's just a Nexus only. And maybe Google is working close enough together with Qualcomm etc so only upcomming Chips will include some "magic" to run in Daydream mode like Google want's it.
It all depends on how much better DayDream VR is compared to what we have today which is not all that great. During the Google IO he mentioned they need a lot higher refresh rate to make this experience smooth - if today`s phones dont have it, lets face the fact and build a better experience rather then getting stuck on existing hardware. All future phones will ensure they satisfy this requirement and VR is not a feature which every consumer is really looking for when buying a new phone, its not there yet, but if google makes this work even on nexus, consumers will look for this on every phone.
If it will be only on nexus devices, then it will be only nexus advantage, if it will be available on all upcomming devices, then it might get very popular.
If the Galaxy line up from the G6 to the G7 edge can use VR(Gear VR) which is almost like Oculus, then why can't it work, and if the Axon 7 can, then what does it have that the 2016 line phones don't have?
I really hope that zte will release this phone in Europe with 6gb ram as sealing my iPhone and getting it straight away:) plus as usual great video Jamie.
That's stupid. If thry really want Daydream to take off they need to get as many people as possible on board, restricting flagship users is like shooting yourself in the leg for the sake of doing it.
I don't understand what you've heard but I heard from Google I/O that it's compatible with phones in the current market! That means current flagships at LEAST!
I wont buy an HTC, LG or Samsung phone just to get their VR Experience. But, since I am a Nexus enthusiast, I will buy a new Nexus because I want to upgrade - DayDream comes along with it, I have no problem with that. If the new Nexus is made by one of these companies, I have no issues investing in it.
do you think it's possible that may be what the plan is to have people buy into a program do you think its possible that maybe what the plan is to have people buy into a program like red tube
If the ZTE Axon 7 states it's Daydream compatible already then it means Daydream wouldn't be just for Nexus devices. Perhaps because Daydream will require 6gb RAM? Otherwise current flagships should be able to handle it. And we hear Oneplus 3 will have 6gb RAM also so chances are that's the key to Daydream?
daydream probably requires a quadHD screen, fast screen refresh rate, snapdragon 820 at least, at least 3-4 gigs of ram, USB type C, and fast flash storage/quality RAM. really only leaves HTC and LG.
i think sd823 or usb type-c i want vr for my note 5 so that i can see what this vr thing is really about. in india we can test vive so this is our only option
So no Daydream on current flagships... do i hear a Nexus 8p launch boost with the SD823? Maybe there's something Qualcomm isn't mentioning aside of the frequency boost with the new SnapDragon 823? hmm OR! maybe it ties in directly with Vulcan, which not all chipsets will support Adreno 400 and up, so SD805+. Curious :D I see a future in Google's daydream, even if not all flagships are covered, but rest assured the Next Nexus flagships will.
Austin E I think it is promising. Moto has really impressed me with the Moto X series and I am due for a new phone. I like the modular idea but we will have to see how well it is done.
Samsung is the one massively pushing VR on Android. If DayDream doesn't support their existing flagships, then it will go nowhere as Samsung will just go rogue and there goes Android VR.
Great title; Google Daydream VR issues... Bizarre to mention this as news or even something noteworthy. Yeah it is a new standard which also takes into account new dimensions and headset compatibility and I think they mentioned this in IO. (They did)
I agree with you Jaime, I think google is trying to make the new nexus phone more appealing by making Daydream exclusive, or at least that's how it looks like to me, and yes I think is a terrible idea, having to buy a new nexus just to use daydream is a stupid thing to do, it makes me dont wanna buy neither one, even the nexus 6p still a excellent phone to run a virtual reality device. Dammit! feels weird agreeing with you on something lol.
I cannot live without pocketnow daily anymore , anyone else with me?
Thank you Jaime.
I'm with you buddy 😆 ✨Pocket Now 2016🎆
👊🏻👊🏻
me 🙋 !
same here haha
you are not alone buddy i keep checking youtube to see Jaime
If that's the case it would become Google's Nightmare.
good one.
haha
LOOL

well said, sir!! clap! clap! clap!
ikr i knew this news since google io
The problem is probably that not every high end smartphone this year is coming with quad HD screen.
1080p is not enough for VR.
ya I tried using my iPhone and it was an awful experience. 😂😂😂😭😭😭
lol xpria shit x, iPhone 6shit still rocking 1080p. those disgusting money whores

Surface pro and book are $150 off at best buy too but if u R a student, u get an extra $100 off at best Buy

You forgot injustice edition s7 edge. it's hot. HOT. LOVE IT
I like gloomy days, its too sunny where I live and it gets crazy hot.
The way I think about it is that it might be like the phone camera: starting out as a gimmick that not many phones had and now is the main selling point of a lot of smartphones
Yes, if it's going to be something universal. Meaning if it's baked into Android itself in a way that all the OEMs can make a VR-ready phone.
Well- Gear VR only works on high-end galaxy series, but it did not flop as far as I know.
What was the question of the day? I was daydreaming 😫
how long of a break do you take in hong kong?don't forget to come back
Welcome to Hong Kong! Hope to meet you somewhere here!
yup, the weather is kind of gloomy in hk today
Oh man, I hope the Axon 7 comes to American markets sometime. Seems perfect.
I have the surface pro 3 is the 4 worth the upgrade
Maybe that's why the new Note 7 is going for 6 gigs of RAM?
still being called the 6
I have a feeling it's something to do with how Google wants to control OEM skins. They dont want Daydream to work on more heavier skins in a way as a punishment that the OEMs make a slow laggy skin? Just a thought
will the axon work on Verizon.
I'm really interested in the Axon 7, it really is very compelling.
I don't think it negates flagships. Most flagships came out without Google Daydream in mind. Since it's new let's see where it goes?
Daydream probably specifies 90fps, 8k res. I wouldn't upgrade for it but I'm glad someone is setting a standard.
It's better to have a slow and steady start on new devices than a terrible start on current ones
I'm so sad. I really want to buy the vr headset and download the daydream app, but my Samsung galaxy s5 can't download it
Daydream is just that, a dream.
I believe they are just create a stir on Daydream compatibility to see statics for users.
They probably charge to use daydream and so some flagships may not pay to have this compatibility. So probably just the major players will have it.
Is the Galaxy NOTE 7 going to support Google Daydream VR in the USA?
I would not buy a new phone just for daydream compatibility but then again I already expected that all current phones are not supported. The simple reason for it, they lack the hardware to track your motion well enough!

I'd like it if it supports current flagships, but I don't think it'll 'flop' if it doesn't, it'll just take longer to gain traction
some of those daydream gameplay scenes look they could have been plucked right out of The Wind Waker.
Well, as I understood them on the I/O main keynote, devices will run on highest possible CPU/GPU-Clock speed in Daydream mode. Interesting but I'm still getting the HTC 10 in Ice View case.
I really really would like to know if there is a axon 7 with 6gb ram and 128gb storage !!! and if it will be available in the USA... need facts!!
Hey Jaime.... I've the same shirt.... but of course u look better in it....
i think it'l probably be available on the next gen flagships
Is there any specification for Android N? Is going saying, every phone which supports 64 bit arch with 4 GM of RAM on it will run Daydream ?
It all depends on how much better DayDream VR is compared to what we have today which is not all that great. What's happening in HK?
Google should've optimized day dream for current flagship devices,or at least for their current flagship nexus 6p running the S 810.
yea im not a nexus fan to begin with so im not gonna buy one just for daydream
Finally you don't need to get VPN for RUclips now that you're in Hong Kong!!
I hoped that it would come to the s6 but i get a upgrade in January so the s8 will support it
may be the other flagships need a Nougat update to enjoy d VR
Dont know if i should upgrade to the ZTE Axon 7 im currently using a Moto X Pure 2015
Its 450 !!! 😱
I really hope that zte will release this phone in Europe with 6gb ram as sealing my iPhone and getting it straight away:) plus as usual great video Jamie.
VR requires high framerate displays (GearVR is the bare minimum) and extremely accurate tracking. "Good enough" most often isn't really.
That's stupid. If thry really want Daydream to take off they need to get as many people as possible on board, restricting flagship users is like shooting yourself in the leg for the sake of doing it.
Daydream is probably the reason we hear about the Snapdragon 823 soc.
Oneplus 3 & next galaxy note coming with 6GB of RAM.. may be that's what is required for daydream
you just met a typhoon in Hong Kong!
I don't understand what you've heard but I heard from Google I/O that it's compatible with phones in the current market! That means current flagships at LEAST!
hows the camera on that zte?
it has a 20 mp
with ois,eis and f 1.8 aperture so it should be good
I wont buy an HTC, LG or Samsung phone just to get their VR Experience. But, since I am a Nexus enthusiast, I will buy a new Nexus because I want to upgrade - DayDream comes along with it, I have no problem with that. If the new Nexus is made by one of these companies, I have no issues investing in it.
daydream probably needs front facing speakers
Jaime has been very good!
do you think it's possible that may be what the plan is to have people buy into a program do you think its possible that maybe what the plan is to have people buy into a program like red tube
It could work if it works with next year's flagships e.g. galaxy s8, lg g6
If the ZTE Axon 7 states it's Daydream compatible already then it means Daydream wouldn't be just for Nexus devices. Perhaps because Daydream will require 6gb RAM? Otherwise current flagships should be able to handle it. And we hear Oneplus 3 will have 6gb RAM also so chances are that's the key to Daydream?
in that case, might as well get your own VR, or google cardboard
daydream probably requires a quadHD screen, fast screen refresh rate, snapdragon 820 at least, at least 3-4 gigs of ram, USB type C, and fast flash storage/quality RAM. really only leaves HTC and LG.
I think next year's flagships will be compatible and then Daydream will soar!
The ZTE came from nowhere.
I guess snapdragon 810 or 820 would be sufficient. I fail to understand why they aren't supported
i think sd823 or usb type-c i want vr for my note 5 so that i can see what this vr thing is really about. in india we can test vive so this is our only option
Love ur vids
Did you say... "crazy enough to buy a smart watch"?
I'm not sold just yet on the idea of VR, and the same applies on smartwatches. they are just not doing enough to make me not consider them as gimmiks.
WHY IS MY AXON 7 NOT COMPATABLE WITH DAYDREAM????
TheCommandMaster it is now, check the compatible phones now
So no Daydream on current flagships... do i hear a Nexus 8p launch boost with the SD823? Maybe there's something Qualcomm isn't mentioning aside of the frequency boost with the new SnapDragon 823? hmm OR! maybe it ties in directly with Vulcan, which not all chipsets will support Adreno 400 and up, so SD805+. Curious :D
I see a future in Google's daydream, even if not all flagships are covered, but rest assured the Next Nexus flagships will.
no because people will be mad that its not compatible. I agree who wants to spend another stack of cash when they just bought a flagship.
no doubt the sales pitch for the VR will tie in with an exclusive google phone ......... its all about money people !
I certainly wouldn't let Daydream, or the lack thereof influence my purchasing decision. Daydream VR means absolutely nothing to me.
Hong Kong!
$450? I think I will wait until the Moto X.
what do you think of the Moto Z?
+Austin E you mean moto triple zed!
Austin E I think it is promising. Moto has really impressed me with the Moto X series and I am due for a new phone. I like the modular idea but we will have to see how well it is done.
You should also go to India Jaime. There's plenty indian OEMs out there.
I think it will be successful. I have an upgrade and I'm waiting for daydream to make a move.
Samsung is the one massively pushing VR on Android. If DayDream doesn't support their existing flagships, then it will go nowhere as Samsung will just go rogue and there goes Android VR.
true
It is just a shame Google has to take these choices, including no Android N simple update on their Nexus devices...
That ZTE phone is what I hope the OnePlus Three will be like.
Probably even better since there isn't a bs invite system
+Antonio 〰 Good point, that skin on the ZTE phone reminded me of LG's Android skin... that's not really a good thing in my opinion
it it runs on my s7bedge... it will have future with me :)
i like the way he spells his name 👌
I cannot sleep without hearing the work "jaime Rivera" atleast 5 times in my last u tube video daily...
Daydream needs 6G of ram?
Great title; Google Daydream VR issues... Bizarre to mention this as news or even something noteworthy. Yeah it is a new standard which also takes into account new dimensions and headset compatibility and I think they mentioned this in IO. (They did)

Dammit! feels weird agreeing with you on something lol.
Daydream nightmare should start in about 2018 :-)
I think it needs USB type C
surely I can use my existing gear vr headset and just buy a motion controller
i could listen to this guy say his name all day lol
