    The opening riff of this song is one of the classics of all time and, heralds the style and raw power of Van Halen. Playing loud is mandatory to get the full feel of their enormous talent and, hell with the neighbors

    I grew up on this music, saw them in concert many times, and to this day I still regularly listen to those first few VH albums, they just hit perfectly.

    The Mighty Van Halen. They had a string of LPs where they could do no wrong. This is one of their best.

    IMO, "Fair Warning" & "Women and Children First" are the very best Albums of VH...this is from Fair Warning!

    GREAT reaction you two!! Awesome way to start my day! This came out in 1981, I was 3...fast forward a couple years and I distinctly remember my sister (13 years older than I) blasting this in her bedroom! I instantly fell in love with that intro...such a heavy, crunchy guitar sound! Now over 40 years later, I still love blasting this for me and my neighbours to hear...whether they like it or not!
    One break, coming up!! Cheers from Canada, eh!

    At 14 years old, I saw them in 1981. Over the years, I have been to many concerts. Van Halen is pure joy! Accepting that I won't be able to do that, anymore is an ongoing process.

    The David Lee Roth era of Van Halen is the best rock band ever, because their music is mostly light and fun, there's no drama no hate no putting down of other people it's just a good time

    • @kenkonwick6660
      @kenkonwick6660 12 дней назад

      No it isn't. Especially if u went to a show or 2. Shows were good, but not fantastic, all 6 shows I went to. Drunk Lee Roth slobbering words into a microphone and staggering on stage was never the draw but the songs were definitely great music. VH was a top 20 band, maybe. Would never have been more than a regional county fair band except for Edward

      On the contrary I remember clearly from my personal experience, the shows being amazing and everyone enjoyed it and never complained.
      David was actually very athletic & fit and the consummate professional and gave us an energetic set with the boys. In fact, I was never disappointed back then when rock and roll wasn’t criticized and turned into a science project.

    • @kenkonwick6660
      @kenkonwick6660 11 дней назад +1

      @tubewrestler59 I agree about his fitness and athleticism. His live vocals were never good. I saw him 3 times in person and always enjoyed the show but I also saw with Hagar twice and was night and day. I guess its personal preference. If u spent ur focus on show Dave, u had a great time. If u actually tried to hear the lyrics, u left a little disappointed, but still appreciated the show and the musicianship. I also was a little sad the Edward spent so much time with his back to the audience in the early days, so nobody would see his tapping technique and other tricks no one else was doing at the time. I saw them later with Sammy twice, and while the show itself wasn't as good, it was still high energy, high entertainment and u got a better lyric performance. It's all in taste, and not saying one was better than the other, buy personally I know more people at the shows I went to enjoyed the Hagar shows just a touch more. But Ed wasn't turning his back to the audience then either, so that's a factor for me as well.

      @
      I agree that it’s personal preference.
      For me, when I see a band live, I don’t want a replication of the song, as it was originally recorded because I will always listen to the studio version, so when I am watching a band perform, I expect improvisation and a version of that song. That could include a singer’s decision to arrange the lyrics or substitute words or a spontaneous guitar solo or longer jam session.
      With Dave, it’s common knowledge that “ forgetting the lyrics” was a part of the show, usually “ Romeo Delight “ but he would also choose to sing certain lyrics, while omitting a word or two. Also it’s a bit of a sacrifice; if he’s going to enhance the performance with a karate kick or another expressive movement or dance, that too, will naturally take priority over certain parts of the song.
      If I would critique Roth in one area, it would be during a time when his in between song intros or raps carried on too long. Aside from that I always thought the band functioned as a tight unit. They had a knack for keeping it very loose and dirty sounding, almost punk in a way, making it seem like they would blow it but always “ landing back on their feet “ and delivering the goods. That’s the Van Halen I choose to remember. On the edge and always exciting. I always felt that if you were to bring a highly trained voice like a Steve Perry into a group like Van Halen, it would sound very odd. David had that perfect low register that matched Edward’s brown sound perfectly.
      In the old club days, Ed did turn his back to the audience during a tapping session but by the time the band’s first album exploded on the scene, it was pure show business and that’s the name of the game. Otherwise, it’s just the same old song and dance.

    Eddie is one of the premier guitarists of all time, but the rest of the group stands out too. Without Roths catchy melodies, timely growls, screams, and grunts, the songs wouldn't be half as good. Add Alex on the drums and Michael Anthony on bass, that's a winning combination. Those first six albums can't be beat.

    Imo David Lee Roth VH is the best. I love Sammy, but it was not as Great.
    When it comes to live though i saw them in 1984 with DLR, and it was ok. Saw them again in 1992 with Sammy Hagar, and it was an awesome show. Thanks for the reaction.
