I’d only heard of one of the books on this list so, clearly, I need to broaden my horizons. I’ve just ordered The Jewel and her Lapidary for my Kindle. Thank you for the recommendation.
@@secretsauceofstorycraft aw thanks... Well I'm also a big fan of your channel too. I actually found you before you joined the Science Alliance ... but I'm just a terrible commenter. Lol. My DMs are always open
Nice! Several books I'm not familiar with. A handful of Kingfisher books have been on my TBR list for a while. I need to get around to reading them. I can second your recommendations of Connie WIllis, Lois McMaster Bujold and Marie Brennan. I also share your feelings about the Seanan McGuire novella. I thought it was well-written, but I didn't enjoy the characters, so I didn't continue the series.
The Broken Sword - Poul Anderson It's an absolute stand alone. It's compact at 290 pages. It's old school Norse mythology style down to a Ragnarok ending.
This was one of the best videos I've seen on booktube! You included so many that I hadn't seen anyone else talk about. I like the editing as well. I usually watch multiple videos before I decide if I should subscribe but I like the format, novellas talked about (I added almost all of them to my tbr list) and info given, can't wait to see what you talk about in your other videos.
Thank you for your recommendation of the Connie Willis story. I have quite a few of her novels, novellas, and short story collections, but I missed this one!
Oh no! I dont want to “diss” him i just dont want to read an entire novel series to get to the novellas. I want to start with a novella and end with a novella. Sorry that wasnt clear. Will do better next time.
I'd recommend The Big Score by K.J. Parker. The hardcover is a very slim volume--a small press, signed limited edition that I consider worth the price. If you are not familiar with the author or his other name, Tom Holt, it is certainly worth checking out on Kindle.
!! I have heard both names but didn't know they were the same person. I have meant to pick up several of each author for a long time. I will see if I can get ahold of the Big Score. If you have a recommended starting place with his work under Tom Holt, I'm all ears.
Inside Job was only released as a chapbook from Subterranean Press, and their runs are all limited editions. You're lucky to have found it! I honestly hated reading The Black Tides of Heaven because of the choices of pronouns in the book. I understand why they were chosen, I just think for clarity that others should have been chosen. The main character were twins who were constantly together and basically indistinguishable referred to as they, etc, and then one of the twins of unchosen gender was referred to as they, and it was so difficult for me to tell who was being discussed by pronouns at any point in the book that it made reading it painful. Any other pronoun set could have been used with the same end and without causing that confusion. It was to me a bad choice for telling the story. I read all the Penric novellas this year. They lag a little through the middle but are coming back strong in the latest ones. They're fun, and skillfully written.
I have been consuming Penric's novellas through my library and the third book has the LONGEST wait. But I'm glad to know I should push through if they lag a bit. I feel that is common even in fantasy stories.

Ooh should b a fun read, you will have to tell me what you think.
@@secretsauceofstorycraft will do.
I love that you included a lot of novellas that no one talks about on Booktube.
Elder Race is definitely one of my favourites
Wow! Thank you. I'm a big fan of your channel! I'm so flattered you watched my video.

Glad Im not the only one who feels this way about seanan. You should pickup at least one kingfisher and see what you think of her writing.
Inside Job is available as part of of the SF Maserworks collection Time is the Fire
I had no idea!!! Thank you!!!
I haven't read any Tchaikovsky yet but I like the idea of a standalone novella. He's on my list for 2023!
Many of his standalone novellas are good. One of his best is Ogres (but its scifi not as much fantasy). I hope you enjoy him!
This is "Clearly" a well done video. Great job Whitney

I have never heard of it! Will check it out
A minor adjustment to your honorable mentions. Down Among The Sticks And Bones is by far the best of McGuire's Wayward Children series.
Perhaps I will pick that one up and see if I like it better! I want to like it so much.

You diss, Brandon Sanderson but his novella “The Emperor’s Soul” is so good 😅. Thank you for the other recommendations ❤

Most of your standalone novellas are part of a series :D But OK, good list.
That's true! Just not apart of big novel series. :)
