whenever the goodreads choice awards come out i feel so out of the loop lmao... literally the only one of these i've read is the book i'm currently reading, absolution by jeff vandermeer, and i've only heard of a couple of the other books...

I've been following the big literary prizes for help, but it seems everyone's been unwhelmed with those picks too (aside from James, which pretty much everyone agrees is really good). PS. I know you say you won't read Sally Rooney, but her last 2 books have been really, really strong!
I just read James and I thought it was phenomenal, it really should have won. I instantly knew I wouldn’t click with Orbital but I wanted to try. Stream of consciousness stuff is just not for me 😭, one page was random musings on life the next would be a list of the names of the Great Lakes, I did not get it 😭 If you want to read anything else from the shortlist The Safekeep was excellent!
I read Middle of The Night by Riley Sager this summer and it was giving Nickelodeon’s “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” … can’t believe his payola on booktube 😭 God of The Woods by Liz Moore was aggressively fine, it could’ve pushed further with the narrative of motherhood, young girls being married young etc. but it only scraped the service…
I read mainly fantasy and only read 3 books in the fantasy category, and I’m uninterested in most of the others, I’ve gotta get more into indie and self-pub, at least they’re doing something interesting
There are wayyyyy better stories than whatever Sally Rooney is trying to do chile lmao 😂 Life is too short. Paradise Problem was a 0/5 which is such a shame because The Unhoneymooners was EXCELLENT, like I was so disappointed. That FMC was cringe as hell.
I really am enjoying blue sisters with 100 pages left but that might have something to do with the fact that I’ve already lost a lot of people in my life so I’m enjoying the difference in perspective from each sister…..it might also have something to do with the fact that right before this I read Sandwich and the writer made the main character out to seem like a complete moron as the main plot and her “adventures” and whatever that was turned out to be the side plot
Yes!!! Disappointed with the GR nominees. It's lacking. I thought it was just me, but I also don't stay on top of reading the mostly newly released, trendiest, most popular books.
I was rooting for James for the Booker even though I hadn’t read any of them. Besides Everett being the only man, I feel like it was too American for the UK judges. Hopefully that means the Pulitzer judges choose it. I finished reading Huck Finn today. James is on my agenda for December. I had forgotten how much I couldn’t stand Tom Sawyer’s treatment of Jim. I hope Everett did something different with that.
@mohamadfirdausbinmat2577 ghostsmith by nicki pau Preto. It is a duology and you should read the first one called bonesmith. I love both books, it is a YA fantasy. Very refreshing and I loved the lore of it all
James definitely should have won the Booker prize and Orbital was a snoozefest but they were definitely gonna have a woman win since the last time was in 2019. It's annoying because James was the best book there. Orbital was a short book that felt like it was 1000 pages long.

I read Home is where the bodies are and it's fine. Seems new releases were super lackluster this year.
