PHP is the best server side programming language for freelance work, because so many small business use PHP.
Video Notes:
Nearly 80% of dynamic websites use PHP. Most of these websites are small business websites. About 35% of the world's websites run on Wordpress or Drupal ... these content management systems are written in PHP. So if you know PHP, you will be better able to work with them.

Hey stef, does your interactive web developer course contain all the html, css,js and all those php videos, because it seems to good to be true? Thanks.
It does indeed! I make it a super bargain because I want to make affordable for everyone. And, when you start to go pro, I know a lot of you will pick up my freelance and business course. Here is the link: shop.killervideostore.com/
Good job!
I haven't seen that freelance and business course? can't find it either, maybe im bad at searching but just couldnt find it lol
Yes he teaches that. I think this course of his is one of the best places to start learning programming. That is just the beginning of the trade, but he will set you up. And don't forget to learn only need to nerd basis (I love that) and fill the gaps as you go. Otherwise you will progress more slowly.
Are your courses affordable and cheap .I'll try ur courses
I’ve recently formed my own agency. PHP is the bomb because I’ve spent more time reusing other peoples code than actually writing my own. For most part, small and medium sized businesses need implementation more than actual custom code. Sure, you have to do some CSS stuff but for the most part, your clients problems have already been solved elsewhere. And it’s your job as a web professional to figure out the best plugins, SAAS, or systems for the client to use.
There you go!
Agreed!
Its not just because small-medium companies uses PHP, its also because PHP is damn powerful, hype-free and to-the-point
I turned to PHP after trying to wire up form handling using Ruby on Rails, what a fucking debacle that was. PHP does it in 2 files rather than about 15. I love PHP now.
For small jobs, PHP rules.
Watching your videos has been a life changer for me, Stefan! Been in IT industry for 10 years (as a functional consultant for big companies), dropped everything to launch freelancer career last year (got fed up with working for others to profit on my hard working, lol). I was investing on Java learning (but working on Wordpress freelance jobs, hahaha) but of course, nothing better than investing on PHP and Wordpress now. Thank you! Ps.: Please come to Brazil! ;)
Congratulations!
I personally would never drop out of school! Who knows what´s going to happen in the future, maybe you´ll need the diploma, so...I would complete school and get some job in the mean time :) just my opinion! Good luck to all of us!
Hey, are you from Brazil? I would really like to know how the job market is for programmers there.
So from personal experience, would you recommend investing time into learning PHP and Wordpress before any other language? I'm finishing up school but am crazy about finding a job that would allow me to set my own schedule and to travel. I hope you reply, Clarisse, as I need advice on getting started on a freelance career. Thanks!
@WAJD SPECULATION - never ever drop out of school. Skills gathered in school will come handy in future.
I think i just bypassed the golden age of PHP. It seems that it has come to a conclusion. Though, that being said, PHP is one of those must have "hammers" for at least another 5-7 years together with C#, Java and javaScript.
This is sooOOo true that programming languages are just tools of solutions. I had been thinking about building a IRC chat bot for a while. I found its kind of complex to do it for the language i know.e.g.php, js (i admit that i m a noob). Then i came across this Python thing... i just started learning it for the past 24hrs, and now i know how to write a basic chat bot. This feeling is just amazing!
Congrats!
Yup, 4 years ago php was my breakthrough into programming
Cool.
Thanks, Stef! BTW, I totally dig the city and landscape shots you do from time-to-time. The last one I watched before this one was when you were driving in the snow. I live in the San Diego area and it's always nice to see snow.
"I live in the San Diego area and it's always nice to see snow." LOL! Everyone here in MTL would LOL that big time. San Diego ... must be nice down there!
LOL! So true. I have a dear friend who lives outside of Ottawa and he would be laughing right along with us ...lol...
Hey man , how can I work in a company remotely while i'm in another country ?
The internet.
MaxDeveloper what's wrong ?
100%. Get up a website showing your work and then reach out to clients on jobs sites .... to begin with.
Just Fax them your resume
Captain Alpha u can’t
You're almost at 70K. :-)
Indeed!
Stef will easily pass 100k subscribers by End of year. His content is far superior to many other software/developer VLOGGERS out there!
Thanks!
He's walked the walk.
I wrote a countdown system in php within 30 minutes. This countdown system allowed me to make countdowns on the fly.. The 30 minutes included adding it to my apache Config.
Came here to watch, instantly liked the video. By the way, Stefan, maybe you could do a video about what security practices should you follow if you are a PHP, Python or C++ developer? Thanks bro :)
Well put! And that carpenter analogy was good too. Just got me thinking, language/framework are more akin to wood selection than carpeting tools. Some are easy to cut, some are sturdier, some are heavy, some are expensive, some are simply unfit for your climate, some will last you through more seasons etc. Just needed to nerd out a bit.
I am finding it hard to get my foot in the door as a Front End Dev even though I have strong skills in JS/CSS/HTML and I am looking at PHP and considering freelancing. This might have tipped me over the edge.
PHP will open many freelancing doors for sure.
I am actually looking at your course right now and I am going to buy it tonight. I have stayed away from libraries and CMSs to focus on pure fundamentals (except for some React) but would you recommend I also now start learning WordPress?
Thanks for the reply. Yeah I do feel pretty overwhelmed trying to take all this on so maybe I will focus on what you said and devote a little time each time to keep my front end skills sharp.
Get your stuff up on GitHub. You've been a little sparse since last September! :P
Hasu haha yeah I haven't pushed much up to GitHub lately but I have been working on programming fundamentals and problems. I guess it is time to start building again!
"I'm a hammer user, I only use a hammer" it does sound way more stupid when you put it that way, haha
Good argument for being a well rounded developer vs a strong coder in one language only.
1:57 ty, php sounds so interesting.
Forgot to mention that i just heard a weird thing in university. Apparently the instructor told them that html5 will be "fully" released in 2022
Just pay attention to what the browsers support. Example, can you use Flexbox: caniuse.com/#feat=flexbox
Starting this journey with the html, CSS and JavaScript triad and unsure if , when I'm fluent with them, continue with node.js or PHP. Can't decide for the moment, I hope I've made up my mind when I'm comfortable with JS. Thanks for the videos Stefan!
Your videos are really great!!!
Thanks!
Great video. Also enjoyed the cityscape panorama!
Do you recommend getting a job first or going straight into freelancing? And a suggestion for another video is how would you display back-end work on a website portfolio
Hey Stef, is the CRUD tutorial still available somewhere? I can't seem to find parts 4 and beyond.
Do you mean on YT?
Hey Stef, just finished your PHP course creating a login form and now looking into the SQL course. Everything was explained really well.
The login form and probably connecting it soon with a database are fundamental, but what are the other tasks of a backend dev? I am interested to get into that rather than frontend.
Hi Stefan,
I would like to ask you a question. I want to know, what is the best way to develop a strong algorithmic thinking? Do you know any good books or video tutorials in JavaScript that can help me or should I learn Java for better resources ? I am a 20 years old front end developer and I want to become in the near future a full stack web developer but I want to have better programming skills in order to do that, to be able to work on complex projects.
I think that you are the best person to give an answer to this question based on your experience. I have to admit that you have one of the best youtube channels that help a lot of people in making choices and I will really appreciate if you can give me some advices.
For a web developer, it is not about algorithmic thinking, it is really about project-level structure of the codebase, proper design and the database, good UX and UI. Algos come in when you are doing high computational tasks, and for the web stack, that is rare. The big bottleneck in web development is the database ... so learn to create well structured databases and that will go a long way in being able to create great web apps.
Building simple web apps ... that is a good way to start. Pick a language, and framework that goes with that language. So it could be Python + Django, PHP + Laravel, Java + Spring, Ruby + Rails ... and if you wanna hang with the hipster/startup crowd, JavaScript + Node.js. Hope that helps.
Thank you very much! I think that I will pick JavaScript with Node because in my country there are more and more jobs available on Node every year.
Hi, for which field you recommend learning Python, for web development or for data analysis as working in a freelance jobs,
I hope if you can answer me because this is the third times I'm wariting for you with no answer
Thank you for your help(:
Python: data analysis, server automation, Ai and ML. PHP is for web app development.
Your stuff is gold man.
another awesome video. many thanks
Doesn't usually go quite as smoothly for me. I typically run into some kind of issue, usually something like a missing dependency if I'm manually deploying a PHP application (without any kind of provisioning tools), typically because my development environment isn't EXACTLY the same as my production environment (even if I am using vagrant). But yeah, I am usually deploying to a LEMP stack anyway, so configuring php-fpm with nginx is always going to be a tad more tedious than just throwing everythng on to a LAMP stack.
You convinced me to learn Php next, instead of React. I've been battling what to learn next and Php is for me hands down. Bye bye Javascript for now. Lol😂
Great info, Thank You.
Hi Stefan, what are your thoughts on non-PHP server frameworks in terms of how popular they could become in the future? I'm thinking mainly about Node.js, which seems like a good option for running severs considering that Javascript is already ubiquitous as a client framework and has evolved a lot in recent years. Do you think Javascript could eventually take over PHP's role, or is that not realistic?
I doubt it because: though node.js does offer some compelling features, in most cases, these features don't impact web apps enough to supplant PHP's huge place in the market. Also, I think that web tech is plateauing to a great extent .... in that the innovations are incremental now. I think that PHP and Node.js can both pull-off great apps, and I can't see how Node.js can come up with some massive leap forward, as we saw with Rails, Java ... and going way back, classic ASP. I hope you get my point.
Yep, that makes sense. So basically, Node isn't likely to offer enough improvements over time to justify switching existing server frameworks away from PHP - is that right? Does that mean alternatives (e.g. Node, Django) will generally be relegated to newer, smaller projects, while PHP remains the dominant language for server frameworks for the forseeable future?
However, I did some more research and found the following article which compares the performance of PHP and Node.js:
www.hostingadvice.com/blog/comparing-node-js-vs-php-performance/
I know that's only one article, but it seems like Node is a clear winner across the board in terms of performance (even when PHP is utilised with HHVM, which facilitates JIT compiling). Is such a large performance improvement not something that benefits server applications, or does Node have other drawbacks that offset this benefit?
Hi Stefan,
Your course was did in 2015. Is it still actual? I will find a job if I will know all this things that you have in your course?
How long more and less getting done the course?
Loczek 1999 courses are updated as needed. For foundations, little has changed.
I was learning Python's Django framework, but I found it too abstract and high-level for my liking. Now I've gone back to PHP and trying to learn it in depth.
The city is so flat.... looks odd to me. Every way I look I see mountains... Great Video!
Thanks! There is a small mountain/hill to the left!
Where are some good sites to find PHP freelance jobs?
Even today, 90% of the freelance jobs are wordpress related.
Hi Nevin, is Wordpress a programing language or a framework? Why is it used for or what can I do with it? By the way, I want to learn coding for freelancing.
*Every language has its own pros and cons*
Hello, how easy is it to get international freelance work if I come from a country where it's not very big?
Very doable. I will be covering the subject more and more soon. But start with the foundations: shop.killervideostore.com/
Thanks Stefan you are like a older programmer male role model to me. I take your advice to heart and also love the fact you promote PHP, being in my 20's all I hear is how node and python are better but nothing like php together with mysql to create a high dynamic data website.
'all the modern languages share the same basic qualities' - there are languages out there that require some context switching. not the ones you mention, though.
Sir, I was broken shift key on keyboard and my ring finger very hurt. hahaha
That was my question :)
Where do algorithms and perhaps more theory exist in your idea of "the core"?
If your making complex apps or working for a large organization. His focus is on small and medium size businesses.
good video! where are you atm? keep it up!
My place.
Interesting!!!
I'm freelancing and I'm not getting clients.
What city is this at the end of the video?
Montreal. A view from my place.
Hey Boss, what do u think about going working as a salesforce developer?
If you get paid well and you like it, why not?
+Stefan Mischook thanks for response :) But what about You? If you had an oppurtunity to get that well paid job, would you switch to this platform? Do You like it?
Hello can you make a video on Gutenberg?
Tanzim Ibthesam I agree, I would love to know his thoughts about the future of WordPress involving Gutenberg and how it will change for the freelance web developer
yoeri van wassenhove Theme customization might not be affected but there will be changes in theme development for sure.
Can you talk about Gutenberg?
i wish you did share your courses on udemy
You deserve 700k man
Appreciate that!
Anyone else noticed how much this guy looks like Rambo ?
Great advice! Ammmm where is your comb ? Lol
LOL! Yep ... windy day. One of the advantages of owning the business - you don't need to comb the hair!
yea I know haha
Who’s that hater that disliked the video?
#yourHouse { view: great; } :)
".....you should look at programming languages as at tools to get the job done...."
Indeed.com
Java: 67,292 jobs, PHP: 14,635 jobs
Filters: for freelance ... PHP is king.
I follow you constantly. I'm sure php is thriving and will keep doing so. However, imho, you are trying too hard to sell your course man.. I am thinking it's gonna do more damage than good at some point.
I am always trying to find a balance. I hear from people how they never knew I had a course ... then some say that mentioning them in a video is too much. ... It is hard to say. You could be right. That said, I have over 1000 videos and most don't mention my courses.
I certainly will be signing up once I get my javascript stuff out of the way. Just saying :) good luck.
U can’t
I'm not judging you, but maybe... just maybe... you need to take a shower and forget about programming for 5 minutes or so? =)
LOL! Hair was clean .... got blow-dried in the wind on my balcony.
that explains why you look like some crazy professor =D
You're almost at 70K. :-)
Yea ... not bad! :)
