Update: This seems to have pretty much completely fixed the problem for me. I've not had any double trigs like this since I did this, over a year ago. I fully expected to have to do this multiple times, but after doing it again for a couple of buttons a few weeks after doing this, it has been totally fine. Not sure how it has managed to fix this issue, but it has!
If only TE had simply used an alu chassis and standard buttons. The sequencer is really good and is let down by the hardware. Mine double trigs, is bent and has popped encoders. The OP1 on the other hand… god tier tank synth!
Great trick. I just ordered mine , and can’t wait to get it. You got a warm , relaxing voice too , just wanted to let you know. Best wishes and thank you😊
I'm perfectly happy to sink hundreds of pounds into synthesisers, but £30 for Deoxit D5 was too much for me! 🤣 The WD-40 Specialist Fast Drying Contact Cleaner did the trick for me though and it was £5.
Thank you for this video. I’ve been reading peoples posts around, and like you, couldn’t get the D5 easily in Australia. Got the WD and it worked really well. Thank you!
Really nice tip. I'm blind and have been considering the opz for a while because of the lack of a screen. But, I was worrying about mine double triggering and warping. Now I will feel better about buying one. How is it almost a year later?
My one has been totally fine since doing this, I still use it heavily and I've not noticed any double triggers returning really. I actually fixed the warping on mine accidentally, but leaving it one on the sun for about 10 minutes on a very warm day! Although I don't recommend that as a fix. Definitely worth getting one in my opinion, I love it, it's still my favourite synthetic I own.
Big thanx for this tutorial! OP-Z is great I love it to but the build quality is not so good my Op-Z bend very…TE should build it with a metal case…that would be great! Greetings 🖖☺️
Mine now has quadruple triggering. This is the last TE objet I will buy for obvious reasons. It's a great concept but would benefit from someone competent to implement it.
If you're really keen to keep using it, you should try this method. I've not had any problems since I've done this, just make sure you use good quality contact cleaner.
I'm borrowing my friends op-z. It was double triggering at first. I saw this video and immediately ordered the cleaning stuff. But now after a few days of playing with it the double triggers have pretty much gone away. So I wonder if the cleaning fluid actually does anything. Like whenever your device isn't double triggering anymore because you pressed the buttons a bunch
I use my OP-Z pretty much everyday, and the double triggers definitely got worse over time, even with frequent use. This has got rid of them pretty much completely. Definitely don't do it if its working fine now though.
have you seen the recent teardown? Apparently the double triggers is the result of rubber disintegrating under the buttons? How is your repair holding up?
Yes, I saw the thread about that. My repair is holding up really well, I've not had to do it again since. I get the occasional double trig, but it's not even 1% of what it was before the fix.
So I recently got a used OPZ. I have this really weird problem. Trying to live record a simple eight bar snare drum track. Well, no matter how many times I try, some notes do not get recorded! Super annoying. And when I record again, to fill in the gaps so to speak, other notes go missing instead. What the heck is up?!? Can anyone help?
No idea, have you managed to figure it out? One thing to note is that the resolution of the sequencer never changes, even if you increase the length of a pattern, it's always 24 tics/step. This means that in longer patterns, your notes might not fall on the grid. You can get around this by either chaining patterns or using step components.
@@mochreach oh? 24 tics per step? You mean that each quarter note is divided into 24 parts so to speak? What I recorded (tried to) was in no shorter notes than 16th notes if you dig what I mean. Hm, I know too little yet I suppose.
It's not necessarily a quarter note, as you can change the step length (Shift + Track + 1-0), but when you do this, the resolution per step does not change. If you set the step length to 8, each step will take 8 times longer to change, but the base resolution is the same (24 tics per step). I don't think I'm explaining this very well, and it might not even be the problem! The only reason I mentioned it is that you said that you had an eight bar snare drum track, so if you've changed the step length to achieve this, the sequencer will have a lower resolution. Here's the relevant docs: teenage.engineering/guides/op-z/track#step-length
Time for a facelift or recall. This Sicks really hard. Just imagine your Apple product have had same issues! I really intended to buy an OP-Z this month. But after seeing so many people having same issues (specially those who use the OP-Z more than 18 months), I decided not to invest in and waiting for a facelift. Teenage Engineering in you want my make sure your products become adults!
It's pretty annoying, but I'd probably still recommend the OP-Z, even with these problems. It's my most used device by far, I love using it. I did this fix once and it's not had any problems with double trigs since. Looking forward to a facelift too though, hopefully we'll get an OP-Z Field.
With 3D printing, it should be possible for a company to provide better, like 2.0 replacement cases, bit like a Gameboy. Before they actually do it and charge Teenage Engineering rates for it.
The only problem is that the keyboard membrane is glued to the top shell of the case, so you'd need to be really careful when removing it to change the case.
NO! DO NOT USE REGULAR WD-40! It is basically the opposite of the contact cleaner. It will jam up your keys and could ruin your device. Only use contact cleaner made for electronics.
I bought mine from Amazon, I live in the UK. If you can't find it, then you might be able to get Deoxit D5 in your area, which also works apparently, although I have not tested it myself, so cannot testify to that.
Still much better, but I have had some double trigs again, only on a couple of the chromatic keys, not the sequencer for some reason. Very minor though.
I'm interested to know if anyone has bought their op-z from the TE store within the last two years and has encountered the double-trigs/warping/encoders popping problems...because I'd love to know that they have stopped ripping people off.
@@mochreach that's why I'm really curious about folk who have bought it recently from TE and not other outlets...to know that changes have been made in terms of improving the quality. I bought one from the second batch (from Andertons) so it's my own fault that mine now looks like a crappy bit of tat, but I do care about people buying sold something years done the line that still has those same issues. No other company would get away with what TE do.
I imagine the inconsistency of the problem might be what makes it difficult to address, although I imagine that it's got something to do with the type of plastic they used to make it. They talked about it having glass fibre in it, I wonder if it's random differences cause by mixing.
@@mochreach I have held a theory about that issue for a while. I imagine they formulated & experimented with that combination of materials for a while in Sweden. And maybe, just maybe, hadn't seen the end results from the production line in Malaysia. Now, I've travelled Malaysia and i'm pretty certain that Stockholm doesn't have anywhere close to the humidity that one encounters from Malaysia. And even though the factory/production line may be climate controlled air-con, I'll bet the storage depot where the boxes get stacked isn't, . So maybe that's where I think the damage gets done. That's just my theory though. Those useless rubber feet that shred even after using just the thumb (let alone the hard plastic handle) are just a bad choice of materials. The popping encoders issue should have been dealt with by now by the company, not the users faffing around with bloody plumber's tape...that should be done before we part with half a grand. And apparently the rocker-switch on the edge is also duff for some (never gets used myself). The best bit? That's when folk are begging TE to sell them a twice-the-price 'field' version of the same thing only made better. Like £500 wasn't already enough.
That sounds like a reasonable hypothesis. The most frustrating thing about it is that it's still my favourite device for making music, so even with the problems (although I've fixed all the issues I had) I use it more than any of my other synths! Conceptually, it's really well designed, but from a manufacturing perspective, not so much.
I don't know if it's the result of horrible design necessarily, the fact you can fix it so easily suggests it's a manufacturing fault. Regardless of that, TE definitely should have been more active responding to it and the Q&A should have been better.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention, your valuable input is appreciated. Do you have a time stamp for a point in the video where the mumbling is particularly egregious?

Just tried this exact method - it worked like magic. At first I thought the OP-Z will smell like auto shop for weeks -- no smell! Can't thank enough!
Mine is still too new to have these problems but I was quite worried about this, thanks for this tip!
If only TE had simply used an alu chassis and standard buttons. The sequencer is really good and is let down by the hardware. Mine double trigs, is bent and has popped encoders. The OP1 on the other hand… god tier tank synth!
Well today they've released the update for also 5x the price!
Great trick. I just ordered mine , and can’t wait to get it. You got a warm , relaxing voice too , just wanted to let you know. Best wishes and thank you😊
I did a similar thing on the back of my OPZ, I put little rubber feet in the four corners and center. seems to help the bending!
Ahhh. Good old Deoxit D5 and Deoxit G5. Cost me an arm and a leg. Will probably last me a lifetime. Did never regret to get those.

Haven't used mine in years because of this, cheers!
Hopefully it works for yours too! Also, RIP Barry Chuckle.
Great news! I'm really interested in getting an OPZ.
I'd highly recommend it, it's still my favourite synth/music making device I own. I take it everywhere with me!

Warmed mine up with a hairdryer and weighed it down to fix the bending 👍🏻
I'll need to give that a go!
Not recommended with a lithium ion battery but if done carefully... I guess.
@@nathanksimpson Just take the battery out 👍🏻
Hey! Really grateful! Could you report how it is after several months from this cleanup?
Still much better. I've had a few double trigs, but nowhere near as bad as it was.
Thanks for the vid - how is your fix going, 1 month on?
A few double trigs creeping back in, but it's still much better than it was before. I'll make a follow up video in a couple of months.
My op-1 is full of double triggers and my headphone Jack is messed up too. It’s no fun. An repairs are hard.
That's rough, definitely worth trying this to fix the double triggers though, I've had no problems since I did it.
