My sincere response to this is that I don't think the pick smacks of racism. But I do agree this is move to leverage a potentially negative thing as a tool for good (even if only Derek's good). Derek has gone on record saying that he doesn't try to create controversy, but will not shy away from trying to leverage it for gain (e.g. the Stockholm Syndrome "language" issue).
A lot of music artists nowadays are hacking gaming controllers to use as part of their electronic instruments. Seems like they hacked theirs to play certain beats when a certain button is pressed. The best example of this is the David Crowder Band who had a working Guitar Hero controller they used for a couple songs live during concerts that actually played guitar chords outside of the game.
I used to admire you Derek, but this vid is making me rethink that. I think perhaps your priorities are in the wrong place since you put the time in to make this vid/song. And the comb/pick in the hair is very mocking (even though you're probably making fun of the fact that you don't have hair) and it smacks of a hint of racism. (I'm sure I'll be called crazy for that last part). And I think you're using this opportunity to springboard your own career by trying to get on Late Night.
Derek should do more songs in this style. It sounds really good.
I love this song! I'm off to find more of Derek's music!

Yes Joey?

Or they just used a regular MIDI pad for the drums and videotaped themselves hitting the Y button on an Xbox controller in time with the high hat.

You must be fun at parties if everything is this serious to you.
He's got a whole album full... Stockholm Syndrome..
Says the small time musician calling out Derek Webb on a video meant to be fun and playful.

Racism exists but certainly not with Derek Webb using a pick.
Out of all the people you could call racist.. seriously?! Haha..
Racism not Mr.Webb , stop thinking simple.
Derek you can make jokes.. but only to white people.. Geeze man..
Haha! This dude's trolling. He just wants you to visit his page because he has no views.
