      I dont understand how ppl think copics are easy to control with the brush nibs?? I used both the ohuhu brush an the copic brush nibs an I'd much prefer the ohuhus. Just my personal opinion though.

      I'm such a heavy-handed one when drawing so I usually go for the chisel and bullet combos, too ^^'. But then again, I'm nowhere near an expert with markers and such a cheap shit that I usually go for cheaper markers ( and I mean really cheap. I mean I got like 6 Copics which I bought for studying and barely ever use and two boxes of Shinhan Touch Twins, which I got for Christmas and am still too scared to really use, but the bulk of mine are from different stores like Sostrene Grene, Action and Flying Tiger and some Touchnew grey tones.) I know that those aren't as great as the Copics but I still get them to blend somewhat and they do what I usually want them to. Plus I can really work the nibs without being to scared to damage the pens, because I can just replace then without putting a black hole in my pocket :)

    You might have bought a pre Jazza spectrum noir illustrator marker edition. When Jazza reviewed them he noticed the soft nip and the company changed it. So when the Jazza art box came out, the nip according to Jazza was firmer.

    For anyone looking into buying Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers. Some pens do feel drier than others (still in 2021), but it is not every pen. I am not sure why this happens with some of them but with others it's fine, but maybe it got something to do with the flow of the ink? Usually coloring slower solves the drier feel, but ofc the trade off can be that it gets more difficult to blend. With smaller sized pieces you won't notice much of this however.
    And yes the brush tip is quite soft. So if you got "heavy" hands, these might be very frustrating for you.
    If you are used to painting with watercolor brushes and mostly enjoy doing smaller pieces, you could very well end up liking these a lot. And for this price? You will be able to get a lot of different colors without going broke. Haha.
    Something I personally love to do with these markers, is to use them as a base and then go in with coloring pencils on top. Even only a lighter layer with coloring pencils transforms the whole piece. The two mediums almost seem to melt together.
    So I do think these can be a nice alternative if you like me, can't afford buying a bigger set of Copic's and prefer being able to buy separate colors and/or refill. I have been eyeing Ohuhu markers, but not being able to buy separate colors is making me hesitant.
    As for the shape of these pens, I too got small hands, but I have a very light grip (get carpal tunnel issues if I grip too hard) so I don't actually notice the somewhat odd shape of them, nor do they feel too big.

      Copics are a good choice but obviously expensive. Ohuhu are a great and cheap alternative, but I don't know if they have greyscale sets. Winsor&Newton brush markers are good too and cheaper than copics, and im 100% they have a greyscale set since they have tons of different sets actually. Their nib is really soft though (like the spectrum noir ones but they dont dry out so fast!! I have a couple of them and they work great for sketching as I prefer a stiff brush nib too for illustrations). I havent tried any other marker brand so I cant recommend any further, I hope this helped!

    Heyo!!! 2 year sub here enjoying your art! I love this deer lady oc and i think it would be cool to see her more! Especially if her hair was able to change color? Everytime we see her her she could have different hair so she doesnt get boring to draw! That hair texture looks really fun to draw a gradient of! (Maybe im just bias for gradients lmao i love em)
    Also! I have a theory on why the spectrum markers are dry out the box! I worked in a popular craft store for 2 whole years and saw those markers sit on the shelves for like a year without being bought! I thiiiink that maybe theyre dry bc 1) they arent that popular and 2) they are considered a handlettering/scrapbooking marker in some stores! So they get to sit longer in the store (in a place you wouldnt think to look for them) than a copic collection lmao.
    Like certain copic packs would sell out and get refilled on a monthly basis. But the spectrums, only available in packs and classified as a “scrapbook” item sat untouched for literally like a year and a half before we got rid of em. The metallic ones got popular for hand lettering so they never made it into the alcohol marker section with everyone else....now i feel like i missed out lmao

    • @AlexaFaie
      @AlexaFaie 4 года назад +1

      Yes this!
      The main issue with pens that people don't tend to realise is that they do have a shelf life and so places will keep them on their shelves for ages during which time its possible for the alcohol to evaporate out. So you buy an old pack and all the alcohol is gone and the pigment is left dried inside.
      Luckily it is possible (probable less so right now with the world situation going on) to "rehydrate" (just with alcohol not water lol) markers like these with rubbing alcohol, basically as close to 100% as its possible to get where one lives. Adding that will let the pigment mix back in and bam, nice juicy marker again.
      (This was less to you, but more to anyone reading this so they don't throw away markers that could be "rehydrated")

    • @Lexouchan
      @Lexouchan 4 года назад +1

      I think it may be an explanation. But still they should have a better shelf life... I have some copics that have been sitting unrefilled for years on my shelf and still have ink in them :/
      I just checked I have a 10+ year copic ciao (that allegedly I haven't used a lot compared to other colours) that is still juicy ... Not juicy like a brand new market but still able to color a fairly large area uniformly (albeit he is a bit squeaky should probably buy a refill for it soon).
      I think all these parameters are why copics markers are so expensive but still hyped ... They are clearly on top on all the others

    • @ForeverWildstar

    And on the note of the bendy brush nib, it's actually my favorite part. It reaches into those really sharp points I draw, and fills larger spaces. Copic, eat your heart out. Here comes Spectrum Noir 😎

    I have the old (black barrel) classique Spectrum noir markers. But the old version. It was an equal sided hexagon. Now they are the hexagon as the illustrator.
    I am slowly buying the illustrator colours because I love the brush nibs.
    Personally I prefer a softer nib. But also can't figure out why your markers are getting dry.
    The thick barrel is a must for me. I can't hold smaller/thinner markers as my hands don't work properly. So therefor I cannot afford the more expensive markers. I have less control of my hands and cannot be precise anymore. So buying something expensive is a bit stupid for me personally. For a beginner it is a nice thing to start with. Since you can buy them seperate, might be worth it to buy one colour you love to use and test out the marker to see if it fits your needs.

    I agree with you about this uncomfortable hexagonal shape and the other characteristics of these markers "outfit", I mean how they look, not very helpful design. But, to begin, I think I'd try them.

    Edit to comment at the end: I've only used mine on smaller pieces, so I usually don't encounter that problem with the nib not staying wet, but it's happened a couple times. It also happens with Spectra AD markers on large pieces. I find they do come back to life by the next day, but frustratingly not in time to finish a piece I would otherwise do in one session.

So i had went to copics soon after that and havent looked back honestly i have some of the spectrum noir illustratiors (from the jazzas jazzy art box last year) they are ok but to me dont compare to copics and i will spend the money on the copics and their refills have not had like any trouble with any of them!

    I bought over 100 Spectrum Noir markers and found about a third of them felt dry and scratchy. It was very disappointing. But I have since discovered it is the nib, not the ink, which is dry. If you soak the pen in just enough acetone to cover the nib for 5 minutes, replace the cap and leave it to rest overnight, the pens work beautifully again.

I would also consider contacting the company or wherever you bought the markers and asking for either replacement markers or refill ink..... :-). Or you know just refilling them with copic ink refills you might already have?? Then you’d have some hybrid markers.
    Interesting that their ink life seems so short though. I got three as part of a package deal and haven’t tested them out yet much because. Well. Black, red and blue don’t offer much color wise by themselves.

    I have the same problem with a "dry" Illustrator Marker. The thing is, the marker isn't dry, because the other nib is totally fine, so I guess I just need to change the brush nib?

    For the price they're good markers nice brushtip, but they're often lie on shelves for months and are more dry because off that. And I'm finding them at bit to clunky to work with for my small hands.

    I can infer that maybe, maybe, you were shipped a batch of older or badly filled markers. That could happen, I guess, just give them another chance from another seller/retailer if you feel like it one day.

    Spectrum noir do seem to run out/dry up quick. I purchased some of their new colours (a few years ago), and whilst they're colours I trended to reach for more often, the images I colour are only small stamped images, nowhere near the large picture you did.. I'd imagine one picture like that would for sure dry them out. Disappointing that the refills are £6 each and I already have 5 dried up ones.. Its expensive imo. Ty for your review x.

    This was very helpful to me, thank you! I currently own oh who who markers, but they are a completely new medium to me. Is there a specific kind of paper you would recommend for markers and that’s also good with colored pencil? Thank you so much, you are so talented and I enjoy your videos so much! ❤️❤️❤️

    Have you ever tried the brush versions of the promarkers (brushmarkers)? I think those nibs are also very soft so I prefer the normal Promarkers. I really enjoy these marker (and other art supplies) testing videos you make :) ps. your cat is awesome xd

    really never got the copic hype, when you watch comparison videos, they are always slightly ahead, but always slightly, so to pay 5-7 dollars more for the copic to get a slightly better pen ? Even the really cheap ones are not a lot worse than the copic...
    So can anyone explain to me why i have to pay almost 7-9 Dollars for a marker ? Wheres the big difference ?

    Oh Sally furry butt haha so cute ! Thanks for doing this! Maybe contact the company bc like you said you weren't doing very big areas ..i would enquire as to is this normal? Maybe you got a bad batch..or if you didn't it would let the company know there's a problem with their product. I would be very upset if I started a piece like yours and that happened.....thanks 😊

      Its possible that the packs she got had just been on the shelf for a while (or in a warehouse for a while) and the alcohol slowly evaporated before she even got a chance to use them. The way to figure that out - whether they'd run out of ink, or the alcohol had just evaporated out is to add some rubbing alcohol (as close to 100% pure as possible) to the pen - since they are refillable this shouldn't be hard. If they've dried out, the pigment will just be sat in the pen and adding the alcohol will allow them to become a liquid ink again and it will be just as bright and vibrant as they were to begin with.

    That's so strange, My Tints set of markers has the color Vanilla (BO1) instead of Suntan. I guess they changed it, but I wonder when.

    Could you possible use the copic brush nib on the spectrum marker? Like using a new blank copic brush nib and replacing the spectrum brush nib with it?

  • @sarah28681
    @sarah28681 4 года назад

    Spectrum Noir are notorious for being dry when they are new. I think that they dont fill them all the way up. I have the whole set of the classics and when i bought them several were dry and basically dead right out of the pack. I used to love the spectrum markers but then I tried a copic and it is hard for me to use them now.

    To fix the nib problem with spectrum, isnt it possible to use a copic nib instrad? Replace the orig spectrum with a copic if it fits in the barrel?
