And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack And you may find yourself in another part of the world And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife And you may ask yourself, "Well, how did I get here?"
And on that day, lemons everywhere felt a great disturbance in the force. For they knew that a new day had dawned. A day where there would be nowhere for them to hide.
Similar thing happened to me. I was flying for a defense contractor and it ended. I was looking for another flying job but wanted to stay based where I was. Didn't happen. A friend of mine dragged me into a computer service industry job telling me while I was waiting he needed help. That apprenticeship turned me into an independent businessman servicing the medical and insurance industry, and I made far more money at it than I would have in another flying job. The aviation industry radically changed for the worse after 9/11, so I dodged a bullet too. Great story, Steve. 5-stars.
My father was active in radio here in the Boston area. He knew everybody, everybody knew him. Then, the radio jobs dried up and he went back to school, got his masters and taught in our community college system for 40 years. Nobody ever knows how things will turn out right? I'm glad you're a lawyer, but you still have a great radio voice. 🙂
a life can change dramatically by simply turning right or left at a stop sign...i was looking for a new friends house and turned the wrong way. Saw a guy getting out of his truck and stopped to ask directions, we got to chatting and he had his fishing boat in dry dock, I asked if he needed help...fast forward 40 years and I am a retired fishing boat Captain with a very lucrative career under my belt.
A console board full of Pots and Pans. And maybe an Audio Baton. It was no surprise to me when I first heard you mention your experience in radio. Talking naturally, extemporaneously, behind a mic, with no one there is a lot harder than people think. And you do a first rate job.
In grade school I was the class clown, in HS I advanced to smart ass and soon came college and my career sprung forward (with the help of alcohol) to total fool. Then without any regard for public conjecture I moved full force into the realm of absurdity. That was all before the notorious mid-life crisis. Today I spread myself between quips and quibs so If it's possible to make you smile; take your mind away from your troubles even for one moment, Your joy brings me joy Smile and the whole world smiles with you
Buddy of mine is a DJ and it's very funny how it works now. He goes in and record all his stuff including announcing songs, etc. Few friends and him would hang out at our houses and a few beers now and then. Next thing you know he's on the radio but sitting right beside me. LOL He does do high school football games on the station too which can't be pre recorded. He loves it.
I'll totally admit to being the kinda person who second guesses a lot of decisions, or regrets certain choices I made in the past. It build to a certain point where I have to tell myself, "not every choice has to be entirely perfect, or perfectly thought out, and the unexpected always exists in a lot of decisions you will make."
I landed a job at a Mailboxes Inc., which is a UPS store before UPS bought them up. I put my 2 weeks in at my old job and one week before my first day there - 9/11/2001 happened, along with the Anthrax scare, where someone was sending anthrax though the mail. They couldn't train me because everything was shut down. I ended up crawling back to my old job soon after.
Famous Victorian writers, such as my beloved Anthony Trollope, would say your path has settled on comfortable lines. Very often, things do work out for the best (but we do not see it at the time)!
I got my nursing degree as some of my radio time. I love the radio time an have tapes from back then. I love that the radio time helped me to jump to nursing field.
Well Steve, I for one am glad you didn’t get that job. God knows who I’d be sitting here having to listen to while I enjoy a glass of Ardbeg Wee Beastie.
The lens of the present can be clear and refreshing, or dark and depressing. It's easy to consider a life as an attorney far better than that of a DJ, but who knows what connections in the entertainment business you might have made during a few years at the Detroit station? You might have become a famous promoter, an in-demand record producer, or maybe even started a talent management company. You're correct about "things happening for a reason." The reason is the decisions one makes--and even seemingly insignificant choices can be truly life changing. Cheers, Steve!
I have reached an age where I can see similar examples in my own life. I like to think of it in terms of the butterfly effect. I remember contemplating some pretty consequential decisions that would have greatly altered the course of my life. I could not have possibly known at the time that I was making the best decision. I always say "If I could predict the future, I wouldn't have to work for a living." Life is a journey.
There was a woman in my class in her 60s. But the problem is that you won't have the time in front of you that you need to establish your practice and so on.
Aye... one passes many mile-marker opportunities while on the road to the ultimate goal. Keep your focus on the journey ahead. Steady as she goes, and thanks again Steve.
I don't know that I've had "the job that got away"... but there definitely have been a handful of women who "got away", that I am extremely thankful I did not marry. A few purchases that fell through. And, thinking about it, I suppose one job - it would have been hell on my body, and would have wrecked me. I already have enough chronic injuries, I certainly don't need more!
I had a job offer in the late 80's to go work at a startup company as the first full time janitor. I knew the person who took the job. In 1999 he cashed in 1/4 of his stock options and bought a million dollar ranch.... I would not have gotten married to the wonderful person I did. I would not have the kids I do. I would not have moved to Texas. Sometimes the road you take has better benefits than you can imagine.
What a sad sad story. Steve, you missed the opportunity to give the PD the brilliant idea of dropping live turkeys for a Thanksgiving giveaway. That would have been groundbreaking . . in a way.
One of the joys of deciding to follow Jesus is that you get to believe that "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose." (Rom 8:28, ESV) Even things that seem terrible, like a traumatic brain injury. I can't work at what I always thought I wanted to do, and I won't ever have a big salary, but I thoroughly enjoy what I am doing now. That doesn't mean my life will be trouble-free, but I look forward to seeing how everything in my life was for the good.
Rush Limbaugh has said many times, the best thing that ever happened to me was when i got fired from Sacramento, and we know about his career, and you can say about Howard Stern same thing
Happened to me once, only it was a Honda car dealership and the guy who liked me, the sales manager left. Don't remember why but we had spent quite a bit of time setting in his office shooting the BS. I was hired all I had to do was show up for work the next day. So next day I walk in and asked where is the sales manager and I was told oh he no longer works here. Me? I was supposed to start working here today. Them: uh.. no. Me, OK, see ya later. Life went left when I thought I was going right. They were a cool nice to deal with dealership that is why I agreed to take the job. I did get a job at a car dealership much later and ended up quitting because they turned out to be the usual scum.
I remember AM radio been the only game in town we would get Adam-12 once a week because we could get TV to work and one a year we would go to a bigger base than the one we live on which was an HQ base, my father ask if I wanted to see the Cowboys a boys night out no girls allowed my mother and sister stayed home! I said yes, and 4 hours on a bus later we finely get there; but because of where I live I did not even know the Cowboys NFL football team was even a thing I had believe I was going to see some real western cowboy show like John Wayne who I saw once talking in French on French TV one day off the base! I was not happy to see it was a football game something I still dislike to this day because my father let us down! My mother told us as kids dad was a cowboy we never believe her because she was French how would she know what is a cowboy dad didn't even have a cowboy hat I was 8 at the time!
Isn't there a movie about a guy who starts out fine but ends up homeless but then he gets hired onto a radio station but the day he's supposed to start DJing they were also bought out by another company and everything was gone? I don't remember what the name of it was.
Steve do you think that after retiring from two careers a man could find a hobby that would turn out to be successful and what qualities would I need. Just never been one to sit idle, body's not so great but still mentally sharp. Comments would be appreciated. Thanks buddy!
There's always a chance the guy got his office cleaned out for him and didn't receive his Rolodex, but in the more probable way it went, aren't you glad you didn't end up working for the person who couldn't even spare two minutes to give you a quick call to let you know what happened?

Steve do you think you reach more people today on RUclips than if you were doing a morning or afternoon radio show?
Well, video killed the radio star.
but you wouldnt have been on youtube like you are today. everything for a reason.
