Jay Leno wrote the forward to the late Jack Passey’s book “For the Love of Old Cars”. I had the privilege of being able to call Jack a friend of mine.

2023: I live in a tiny town (10K people, 9K dogs) in southern Ontario, Canada. Our little library system, originally initiated by Dale Carnegie in 1909 but now relocated, holds 5 Lehto titles - more than many another famous author. My favourite is _American Murder Houses_ .

  • @mascotgraphics

Wow, that story just keeps getting better; it's always an adventure at Leno's Garage. People always ask which car he likes the most, and I'm over there saying, "tell us another story about the history of one of your cars and how you acquired it!" During that visit, I discovered something that I hadn't known prior to that day, and I was thrilled about it.
I was the editor of a musclecar magazine a few years back, and a little bird slipped and told me about the rollover accident with the Hemi Under Glass Barracuda, with Jay riding shotgun. When I was at LVMS where Bob Riggle was doing one of his last wheelstands of his career, I asked him about that rollover accident, which was only the second of his career. He told me that was supposed to be an NDA deal and he couldn't talk about it, but he gave me his number and said, "If you promise not to tell a soul about it, I'll give you the first interview once Jay releases the video of the accident."
I kept my word, and when that video hit the airways, on a Saturday, I think, I got on the phone the next morning and called Bob. He gave me his undivided attention for a little over two hours, and we talked about the rollover, Jay, his career, and the two cars he had - car A and car B. I published my article the next morning, titled, "Hemi Under Glass Does A Shake, Rattle, and Roll With Jay Leno." A year later, Jay was back at LVMS with Bob and his rebuilt HUG. Despite the hype played out in the weeks leading up to that event, Jay, unfortunately, was not going "finish what they started" - riding a wheelstand in HUG one last time, which had been one of his childhood dreams.
At an autograph session, I saw some friends hand a plaque to Bob Riggle; as I was talking with him I noticed that some of the pictures on the plaque were my photos from my article. I looked closer, and it was my article, but nobody had mentioned anything to me about the plaque. What had happened was my friend Roland, with Chrysler Power Magazine, had asked if he could reprint one of my stories, and I had forgotten all about it and didn't remember which one. Well, Roland, sadly, had passed away the year before so he couldn't be there to hand the plaque to Bob.
My second visit to Leno's Garage was when I made my discovery; I was there for a product release and tour, and went into the men's room that afternoon. Lo and behold, there was the plaque, with my article, hanging on the wall. Bob had given it to Jay, and Jay hung it on the wall in the men's room. And no, I wasn't offended; it's good reading! If nature hadn't called me that afternoon, I may have never discovered the plaque was hanging up at Leno's Garage.

Jay Leno came into the combat area to do shows for us, and brought a motorcycle, Chris Issac, another country singer, and Cedric the Entertainer. Jay could not have been nicer to the troops, and was so appreciative to the aircrews that transported him around. Just a classy guy all the time.

This was a neat episode for me. I bought a copy of Steve's Chrysler Turbine car book from the Chrysler museum about 10 years ago. I had just spent some time looking at the engine for the original turbine car. I bought the book because my father told me about the one he saw as a kid with his father.
A few years later I became a high school instructor for auto repair. At a nation wide conference they presented a video by Jay Leno to us as instructors. In it he tells a story of a young man who has a flat at the side of the road with his tire iron in his hands trying to figure out how to take off the lug nuts while the center cap was still installed. Apparently Jay helped the kid change the tire.

Jay Leno is the one celebrity I would love to meet. I missed my chance when he returned to the Tonight Show, as I actually won the contest to be his guest for the return show in March 2010, but I didn't check my email for several days and missed the response deadline. I was so disappointed! But I did get to see him in 2006 during the taping of the show. He certainly seems like a super genuine guy!

Steve, that's a great story. I've seen Jay a few times driving some of the vehicles in his collection. I've seen him in a couple of his steam cars (a Premier and the White you mentioned), a classic Fairlane ('64 I believe), and once on a motorcycle. When you showed the picture of Jay and the turbine car, I cracked up because I know the exact parking lot you were in. About the same time this video came out on the Vault (or soon thereafter), I was in that very same parking lot watching a jet my daughter was on take off from the airport.
I've heard several stories about Jay and the relationships he has with people, and all of them show him as the person you describe. Everyone I know that has met him says the same thing about him being authentic and very friendly. I'm glad you got to have those experiences with him.

I think the coolest part is not the absolutely insanely beautiful story you shared-which, that it is; it's the fact that I watched Jay's show as a kid in the same time frame that the headline was mentioned... there's a pretty dang fine chance I saw that episode of the tonight show even though I can't explicitly recall it (I would have still been younger than 10 yrs old at the time, mind you). I've seen some of Jay's garage show over the years whether on TV or on RUclips. Now, here I am watching someone (you) for at least a year now who had direct connection to Jay. It continues to blow my mind how paths can just seemingly randomly cross, even if indirectly. Absolutely beautiful video; I'm glad I scrolled through and watched some more of the Vault channel.

It's still not everything. I can relate to these kind of stories...there was certain smell to that day, the light reflected off of things, the air was warm and comfy. I rode in a friend's boat on a warm october afternoon on lake Havasu. The air was perfect, the mood was total relaxation, the water streaming by was a nice azure color, I was recovering from a divorce and the death of my 8 year old handicapped daughter, there was so much in my head at that surreal moment. Trying to reduce that to a tellable storyline would never do justice to how transformative it turned out to be. My life changed for the better in the time of a snapshot. Life is full of moments, moments we don't fully appreciate until the fullness of time. This is that story. We all relate. We've had these moments, and it's a part of life's treasure. Keep telling those stories, it's part of why we love you so very much, and part of what makes Jay Leno so relatable.

I met Jay Leno and his wife back in the late 1980s, give or take, on a flight from Dulles to LA. Martin Mull was also on the flight. Jay had just hosted a live TV event in D.C. the night before and Martin Mull was apparently also out there to attend.
We were sitting in 1st class back in the day when smoking was still allowed on the flights. A woman showed up late for the flight, with her therapist, and made a big deal about having to have a window seat in the smoking row(s) of 1st class and they ended up moving the whole 1st class cabin all about to make this woman happy. Initially I had been sitting next to Jay and I think I ended up across the isle when it was all said and done.
We talked cars and motorcycles a bit. He was exactly as you describe him. The guy on TV is the guy you're talking to. Very down to earth seemed genuinely interested in talking with you.
Living in So Cal and being involved in cars and motorcycles and driving some of the mountain roads around here, you run into lots of people who have met Jay at one time or another while he's out for a drive / ride, and they all say the same thing - he's exactly the guy you see on TV.

I'll add a Jay Leno story.... driving north on I-5 out of Orange County out of no where comes a Dusenberg in the fast lane. The driver has on goggles and a scarf.... I wave at him and realize it's Jay Leno. Jay turns, smiles and waves back and keeps driving the monster car at 65+ mph..

What a cool story. I'm in no way someone that cares for celebrities. There are only a few that are genuinely great people. Jay Leno would be one person (along with you Steve😁) that I wouldn't mind meeting and hanging out with. His devotion to the history of the automobile and especially keeping them stock is something I am very happy to watch and learn about.

I'm happy you told this story.
I was in Iraq in 2007, and never would have seen it otherwise.

Great story, well told. The bookstore making a fun ad to keep book sales going, Jay making fun of the ad, Steve having fun with his response, and Jay being just a genuine good guy.
By the way, I just realized the Vault was different than the regular channel. Sub this one too.

Jay does seem pretty down to earth, but I have always admired the genuine way you tailor your words. It is good you both got connected~
