Christopher Lambert may not be the greatest actor in the world (especially next to Sean Connery) but I give him a lot of respect. If he's not wearing glasses in a role just keep in mind that the man is basically working blind. He has severe myopia and can't wear contacts so he can barely see at all when on camera. The novelisation of the film is worth a read, it fleshes a lot out well. We spend a lot more time with Conner growing up in the Highlands, especially his releationship with his cousin Dougal. And it explains better why his first girlfriend goes from seeming loving to wanting to burn him overnight - she thinks she is pregnant by him and is therefore carrying the devils seed and burning him is the only way to purify the unborn child in her (as we find out later she cant in fact be pregnant, but her belief she might be combined with her devout catholism provides the motivation for her otherwise seeming suden change of heart). The novelisation is full of nice touches like that.
The Brenda love story is basically a product of its time, it was expected, but the film could do without it and in fact I always felt the story would have been better had her part been largely taken up by Rachel (without any romantic subplot but focused on his fatherly role to her and in her raising) had it been her kidnapped and threatened by Kurgen at the end it would have been much more emotionally stronger than kidnapping a shoehorned in love interest whose story is repetitive and so much weaker than the Heather love story we already got. Brenda's character could just have been someone in police forensics on the police side of the plot following the trail.

(After "Flash Gordon", which was not a good movie and consequently tanked pretty hard, they decided to never do another movie soundtrack) Although there is no official soundtrack for this movie, all original Queen songs are on the Queen album "A Kind of magic". In addition, there is a cover version of Frank Sinatra's "New York" and "Hammer to Fall" from the earlier Queen album "The Works" in the movie.

I knew a guy in college who was the best impressionist I've ever seen or heard. Including people who do it for a living. This was his favorite movie growing up, and he could do any line of dialogue (excluding the women) perfectly. Had the entire thing memorized. But between his Highlander, The Princess Bride, and The Untouchables impressions, I couldn't stay mad at him long.

It speaks to the strength of the overall tapestry that Queen, originally slated to do just one song for the film basically scored the whole thing after seeing it. Something about it touched Freddy on a deep level. A lot of people don't realize that, these songs were made FOR this movie out of love for the story.
This is one of those movies that tipped me over on sequels. Sometimes its better that a work stand on its own and not be franchised to Hell and back. Sixteen movies in, you've cheapened everything.
Another example is the entirety of the slasher genre. We had some compelling and terrifying icons. A silent killer stalking middle America which after a dozen sequels has almost none of its identity, and so many people who watch the original Halloween now are dissappointed by it. The Nightmare on Elm Street movies, though they are campy fun, none of them quite live up to the original genius of a demon stalking your nightmares. The original ALIEN, a classic horror frame work with sexual subtext and fears associated with violation, being trapped, and lost in an uncaring machine world. Now? It's a space monster franchise stretched out across five decades.
Highlander as a film and television series basically solidified the idea that sometimes one and done is the best. The series is a lot of fun, but this original film stands head and shoulders above any of the film sequels. By far the best of its kind.

They had to retcon the events of the movie a little (The Gathering hadn’t happened, it was just a personal vendetta between Connor MacLeod and Kurgan), but otherwise it’s very faithful to the original film and even expands on the lore (like WHY immortals never fight on holy ground, for example).

Cool shirt! I just bought the soundtrack on modern 180 gram vinyl LP (my original LP was stolen in 1995). I'm glad you left the beaten path to pursue an item of personal interest! This was one of several 1980's films that molded a generation of Dungeons and Dragons geeks (I was one) and fed the imaginations of many other fans of the fantasy genre. Here is a list of the nine biggest films that I recall: Highlander (1985), Labyrinth (1986), The Dark Crystal (1982), Dragonslayer (1981), The Beastmaster (1982), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), The NeverEnding Story (1984), Legend (1985), and Clash of the Titans (1981). Most of them are beyond "dated" and are exceptionally cheesy, but every single one is a fantastic tale in its own right! Thank you. So much for sharing this.
The cuts you added in for your editing, the pieces of movies, shows and cartoons, that this movie made you think of.
Some of those shows may and probably were inspired by this very movie. It's even more funny for me basically watching this in reverse.
"The Prize", I don't think there's any way for mortal men ( the movie makers ) to figure out all the pieces of the puzzle that would make an immortal's life.
They got the premise, and were able to flesh out ( yes, that was funny to me too as I wrote that ) - flesh out a common Scottish clansman abruptly finding out he was actually immortal after one stramash or another that could show up between Clans - and fortunately didn't involve the English.
-- sorry, due to the main character's culture of origin, it made me think of a piece of information during some dialogue in the book OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon. ( yes, the tv series is based on this book, and this series of books ). The word stramash was used in the book, and from the context, I believe it basically means basically a fight between rivals, with that fight having multiple fighter...like if football teams carried swords and might or might not kill each other while raiding each other to abscond ( lol, as if changing to that word doesn't mean stealing is still stealing, and using the word stealing would somehow be more offensive than the word abscond ).
Damnit, i got lost in this "conversation" b.s. and lost my train of thought.
If you want more lore for the Immortals, their lives and fighting for 'The Prize', the tv series covers a lot pretty well, covering even a few female Immortals, a harder thing for women, considering the limitations that religion and patriarchal cultures kept on them for centuries. And the show even covered an Immortal who ctopped aging after his first death, trapping him in the body of a child. I'm only telling you this because you expressed a desire for more lore.
    - right. "The Prize", how sad that just knowing peoples' thoughts was the epitome of what the writer thought would be a worthy "prize" to get for all those beheadings.
...wrote themselves into a corner there, and didn't know how to "win", without leaving the main character as little more than a warlord.
If you want some other 80s cheesiness, check out My Chauffeur, a cute enough story, where another Hollywood producer figured a cute story wasn't enough to get more than just a female dominated viewers, but tossed in nudity to get more men to suffer through the cute romance to see the boobies. Worked to a degree, I guess. On the plus side, the dialogue was cute, and more than 20 years of first watching it, I and a few friends can toss in a quote out of no where that gets a laugh.
It's hard to not laugh at
"All I have to do is find a one-legged nun walking a goat, And I WIN."
Anyways, I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. I didn't care for the police investigation part of the story so much, but there was a lot of world building to do in a limited amount of run time...origin story, flashbacks, final fight. Not a lot to go on to suddenly include the modern era.
    Glad you had fun.

The Quickening is the life experience, knowledge and power developed over time by each immortal. When one kills another the Quickening is transferred to the victor. The older the immortal, the more powerful the Quickening. By this point there are very few immortals left, those who have survived are the most powerful who have ever existed in this cycle of immortality.
There is also the issue of possession. If a younger immortal somehow kills an elder, the elders Quickening can be too powerful and that elder can sometimes live again through the younger immortal.
In the TV series we discover that the cycle happens every 5000 years. That there is four immortals in the world from the previous cycle. 5000+ years old. Nobody in their right mind wants to fight them.
They are power personified and Duncan McLeod is friends with one. Methos. They never explicitly come out and say it, but it's strongly implied that Methos began the Watchers as a way of keeping track of the other younger immortals. The Watchers have absolutely no idea that he and the other three still exist.
If they did, they'd be ordering in bulk supplies of brown trousers!
During the ending fight in the ice rink, the director did not tell the actor playing Connor MacLeod that the windows were going to explode. He wanted an honest reaction when MacLeod received the Prize; the combined Quickenings of almost every immortal on Earth. So, he was told nothing but the line you hear him say, 'there can be only one!' And now, he is the one!

@@RhetoricalThrill as I said Adrian Paul was the absolute perfect choice to play Duncan. I just got reminded of a great description I heard by a woman doing a review of the show. She described him as an example of when Scottish and Japanese genes get together and have a real good time!
Paul had an absolute blast playing him. He even wrote an episode or 2, one where he taught a class on the Crusades and the class, unsurprisingly, is mostly young girls and they are practically drooling over him. Especially when he tells them about an incident in the Crusades which actually happened. How the European knights required huge stallions in order to carry the plate armour and other weaponry, not to mention the fact that when you start training to wield all these weapons with all that weight on when you're still practically in nappies you end up being built like a gorilla.
The Saracens, on the other hand, wore much lighter armour and preferred speed to power, so their preferred horse was a mare.
During one major battle, the Saracens didn't noticed that their horses were coming into heat and since horses are herd animals, once one starts, they all start!
The stallions got a nose full of the world's most intoxicating perfume and completely forgot about the battle.
It was the one time where peace had to be declared between the Knights and the Saracens as they needed to get their horses attention. Duncan summed it up for the class in a way that had them in stitches: 'it was the first documented case of make love, not war!'
      🤣

@@RhetoricalThrill They are working on one with Henry Cavill. Someone asked Adrian Paul who did the TV series and the 4th Highlander movie what he thought of the remake and he felt the same way that there’s so much to explore and was thinking they should make a new character instead of Connor or Duncan(his character). It would be neat to see ot from someone else’s point of view fighting evil immortals and hearing about Connor MacCleod. The original scriptwriter for the TV series was brought on to rewrite the script for the new one. Out of the movies I place them in rank as 1-the first one, 2-the fourth one, 3-the third one, 4-the fifth one and 5-the second one. I can enjoy them by looking at them as individual films and not sequels. The second one I’m not sure what they were thinking and the actors pretty much said they did it for the money cause the script was crap. Lambert had to do it cause of contractual obligations. The rest of the movies pretty much ignore the second one. What’s funny is the second one takes place in 2024 so we can see what we missed out on. The producers created the tv series to regain filming rights.
