Some other things to add on your defense of Belle: another of Belle's qualities, aside from her intelligence, compassion, and loyalty, is her ability to see people for who they are, and that's put on full display throughout her interactions with the two men in her life. Belle saw Gaston as a sexist, narcissistic, meatheaded pig, while Belle saw Beast as a depressed broken man who was devoid of hope, life, light, and most importantly, love. The only difference is that Beast managed to change for the better and he regained his humanity due to his efforts, while Gaston became even worse and look what happened to him. Also, if anyone remembers that Beauty and the Beast was on Broadway, there's a song called "Me" sung by Gaston himself when he tries to propose to Belle, while telling her about the life they could share together, all while assuming Belle's been wondering if she'll be a wife. To make things worse, if you see the choreography throughout the song, Belle is clearly trying to pull away from Gaston, but he keeps on pulling her toward him, at least until she is finally able to get into her house and wait for Gaston to leave. So yeah, Gaston is definitely a villain you either love to hate or hate to love.

Belle is my absolute favorite Disney Princess. She’s kind, compassionate, adventurous, brave, and always looks at the person on the inside rather than on the outside.
People bashing on her are so sensitive and stupid it’s ridiculous. No, she shouldn’t have gone with Gaston because she would have been miserable. He doesn’t care about her. He wants her as a trophy. And Gaston is a monster. Humans can be monsters, too. Beast started out as a monster, but it only when he changed did Belle start seeing the person he is on the inside.
Belle is also not guilty of being a “furry” because Beast is a cursed man. I swear, the only thing people are proving by criticizing Belle is that they are as shallow as Gaston because they only care about appearances, and they do not have the strength or compassionate heart to break the curse.

Thank you so much for making these videos! I know lots of little girls say Ariel is their favorite princess. They always say it's because she's brave, adventurous, has a beautiful voice, etc. Not ONCE have I heard them say they like her because she "gives up everything for a man". If anything, the whole reason she made a deal with Ursula (granted Ariel was very much hesitant) was because her father destroyed everything in her grotto and that was the final nail in the coffin. I'm so happy you and many others are here to let people know they've been taking the princesses for granted.

(🤣 I watched a video on the Belle Gaston thing, l died on the inside that day)

  • @xfairfaeriex
    @xfairfaeriex Год назад +10

To add about Ariel, while it wasn't smart for her to accept the deal with Ursula, she basically had no alternative. She had been hiding who she was by hiding her interests about the human world from her father with treasure hunting and her collection in the grotto which was the one thing and place that brought her joy and was her safe space to be herself. Triton's tailing her with Sebastian brought about the destruction of that one place that she cherished and identified with. With it destroyed, she had nothing left of herself and Triton's overbearing actions demonstrated to her her alienation from her people and especially her father who showed no care for her as a person by imposing his will on her. Yes, it was silly for her to say she loved Eric as her last resort but the rest of her arguments were about compassion ("He would have died") and not passing blind judgment ("You don't even know him") when he said "One less human to worry about" and wouldn't listen at all to her points. After Ariel becomes human, even Sebastian recognizes that she'll be miserable if she goes back: "Maybe there's still time. If we could get that witch to give you back your voice, you could go home with all the normal fish, and just be... just be... just be miserable for the rest of your life."
The movie didn't show a long time passing for the sake of brevity in an hour and a half movie, but Eric and Ariel are actually a good match based on their personalities. They are both compassionate, don't judge others, and enjoy adventure. I mentioned how Ariel embodies these characteristics earlier so let's look at Eric. He is compassionate in that he went all the way back to save Max from dying on the burning ship and risked his life over it (classic "save the cat", or dog in this case, story telling). He didn't judge Ariel for looking like a peasant or being mute when he met her and even personally showed her around his kingdom despite his rank as a prince. He also hated the self-important statue of himself that Grimsby commissioned for his birthday. He loves adventure because he said in the beginning of the movie "Isn't this great? The salty sea air, the wind blowing in your face... a perfect day to be at sea!" and isn't afraid to get his hands "dirty" by acting as a crew mate. One of the sailors implies Eric is a good sailor because, when Eric doesn't know about Triton and asks about him, one of sailors says "Why, ruler of the merpeople, lad. Thought every good sailor knew about him."
Ariel also brings a sense of adventure and lightheartedness into Eric's world which we see when he enjoys the excursion to town and when she makes him laugh with blowing soot into Grimsby's face with his pipe. Even Carlotta comments on it: "Why, Eric, that's the first time I've seen you smile in weeks." If you actually pay attention, you'll see that a good amount of care was put into developing the characters and their relationships in this movie with their actions and words (minus a few instances).

In jasmine’s case there’s also the fact that in the story and time period IT’S THE LAW that she has to marry a prince so not only does Aladdin feel unworthy but to even legally date her he’d have to be a prince and then the story shows that said law inhibits both Jasmine’s and Aladdin’s freedom to love freely, carve their own futures or do anything for their community. They both make a love connection with Aladdin thinking Jasmine’s a sweet regular girl who feels trapped like him and could see a future with and Jasmine liking Aladdin for his mind, good character and because he represents the freedom and companionship, then when trying and failing to help him she decides to challenge the marriage system by making sure Jafar can’t abuse power over others with “At least some good will come out of my being forced to marry. When I am queen I will have the power to get rid of you” but is still holding out for the right guy. And she does know why Aladdin lied with “That stupid law! This isn’t fair! I love you”

There was even one episode where Jasmine believes that Aladdin only loves her because of her beauty and she’s tricked into taking a potion that is turning her into a snake. Eric was technically doing his job as commander in chief or head of the navy, or whatever a prince regent is to his country. Also, Aladdin may on some level have wanted to not cause trouble for Jasmine by showing up as a homeless dude, and he must have known her father had the last word in who she would marry. That is probably why they made the sultan into a manchild who liked cute birds; so people would understand how he never put his foot down with all those rejected marriage proposals.

Both parts were great. I bet most of those who have been criticizing the classic Disney princesses probably either haven't even watched the old Disney movies but know the very basic plots of them and simply makeup stuff in their heads to fill in the gaps in their knowledge or if they had, they've based their opinions solely on hazy and biased childhood memories. Either way, they have been warped by naturalistic modern society's short-sighted & narrow-minded expectations, with little real-life experience and little or no imagination. They cannot understand the concept of escapism entertainment in film & tv, wanting everything to fit into their own shoebox worldview, making up their own headcanons. Then there are those who just listen to those people and simply parrot what they say without forming their own opinions. Maybe it's all of the above..?

The first point you make is kinda the thing wrong across the board with where fictional media is going, in general, not just with kid-oriented stuff. It's gone from "we can't have the good guy make bad choices (and learn from it)", to the point where villains themselves can't even do/say anything TOO nasty. At which point, the writer/creator is displaying a flooring lack of confidence in their story, and in an audience's capacity to know that "the bad thing on screen is NOT to be followed as an example". Case in point: the remake of Little Mermaid took away Ursula's line that is, in essence, "girls are preferred by men to be seen, not heard". Modern Disney canned this because it's an unsavory mindset.. even though *it's coming from the mouth of the manipulative witch character that isn't supposed to be looked at for life-advice.*

Thank you for defending Belle against the Stockholm Syndrome accusations. The idea (of her having it) never felt fully right with me, and all do to the reasons you stated in your video. Like sure, I can tell where people are coming from as on the surface it does look suspiciously like an example. But just saying that she fell in love because she was not in the right mind takes away the agency of the character. It makes saving the Beast both after the wolves and during the climax fake as "it's just because she's crazy." Ah yes, let's forget the fact he went out to save her from wolves, paid attention to her interests, and simply spent time with her either during meals and other points of the day. Judging by the trees in the village, the seasons go from fall all the way back to fall. We know there was a winter in between as both the village and the castle get snow. (For the village snow, see the scene where Maurice tries to get help.) She likely stayed at least a year before leaving, and it would be natural for them to bond when they are taking genuine interest in one another.
I also love how you stressed that she wasn't really trapped, pointing out the times she could have left but didn't. That only makes the fact she chose to stay for around a year even more important, as she definitely could have left during the spring or summer when the weather was warmer and the days were longer. But Belle chose not to because she either a) remembered the deal and/or b) flat out didn't want to because she was growing fond of the Beast. To further expand on the point, another Beast vs Gaston parallel is the circumstances about her father being locked up. In the Beast's case, he did as he was trying to punish the father for breaking a rule. His decision had nothing to do with Belle; it's highly likely he didn't even know she existed! And even if Belle took his place, the Beast listened to his staff and improved the living situation from a cell to something comfortable. And when he switched the living situation he allowed her access to MOST OF THE CASTLE!! There's a chance she just hadn't gotten the part of the castle with the library yet, but he decided to highlight it because it made her happy. He didn't trap her, she was the one who chose to stay, and he tried to make the situation the best it could be.
Gaston, on the other hand, was locking the father up as a form of blackmail to Belle. And later in the movie, he locked up Belle too. When he did lock Belle up, it was after he made her look crazy to the rest of the town. His song at that point in the movie translates to: "there's no way she could love the Beast unless she's crazy because the Beast is dangerous and a harm to society." In a way, audience members who buy into the Stolkhom Syndrome end up being like the townspeople. Because of those two things, I would not put past this man to be a gaslighting abuser, and even would get the village in on the abuse. Honestly, it shows Belle's self-respect and social intelligence not to be with him, as she sees his flaws and knows she can do better. She doesn't mind being unmarried if it means not being with Gaston, and that should be respected.
Belle is one of my favorite princesses and I'm glad you defended her against all the people missing key points about the story. Thanks for doing the series, as well, as it clarifies points I feel were accurate about the characters and you do a great job at explaining how they are good rolemodels not deserving of the insults people throw at them.

Grimsby in Little Mermaid even mentions this when Ursula as Vanessa has Eric under mind control “these things do take time” and it’s only a ship with people from Eric’s kingdom that afternoon and the Vanessa wedding is presented as stiff, small and dull vs Ariel’s wedding where both humans and merfolk are present at the wedding and it’s more joyous and grander in scale.

Yes, Aladdin lied. But here's the thing: he made up for it and proved his true worth later. He came back to rescue Jasmine and her father, he bravely took on Jafar knowing he had no chance and still put up a good fight, and then he used his wits to manipulate Jafar into wishing himself into being imprisoned in a lamp. And then, he willingly chose to free The Genie, refusing to break his vow despite The Genie's willingness to stay in the lamp for his friend. A man who can fight, will defend those he loves, is brave, and will own up to mistakes and bad things he's done while doing better? It's no wonder The Sultan decided to change the law, he may not have been a great judge of character, but he clearly saw Aladdin was worthy of power and would treat his daughter well.

  • @madebymaryssa

The lesson from Ariel and Ursula's contract: read the terms and conditions (Ursula never included a non-interference clause, meaning she was able to stop Ariel and Eric from kissing without voiding the contract), and don't trust someone who's trying to rush you into signing something.
Eric pretty explicitly took Ariel on that tour of the kingdom because it got him *away* from pining for the mystery girl who saved him. (Grimsby: "You can't just spend all your time moping about. You need to get out!") Falling for Ariel took Eric by surprise as he got to know her As A Person without thinking of her as a potential spouse. It's very sweet.
If she had written him a note saying, "I'm a mermaid and I saved you but then I traded my voice to become human" ... How would he even react to that? Considering she couldn't prove it, I think Ariel made the right call not telling him. Even if he believed her, suddenly all his fantasies about Mystery Girl would be in the way of getting to know Ariel, and a kiss might not be True Love's Kiss because he loves his *idea* of her more than *actual* her.
I read somewhere that the character director based Gaston on aspects of several of her ex-boyfriends, including one who became a stalker. "Not only is Gaston *not* a woman's fantasy, he is literally a woman's nightmare."
Controversial take: Belle never goes out of her way to change the Beast. She just calls him on his bad behaviour. ("If you hadn't run away, this wouldn't have happened." "If you hadn't frightened me, I wouldn't have run away!" "... Well, *you* shouldn't have been in the West Wing!" "Well, *you* should learn to control your temper! Now hold still. This might sting a little.") (Side note, I feel like the whole West Wing situation could've been avoided if he just said "it's my private quarters." Belle is curious, but maybe not enough to let herself into a strange man's bedroom.) The change comes from *him* . He matures, learns to respect others, opens up emotionally, falls in love, and that's why he changes back to human - it's not *her* reward for 'fixing him', it's *his* reward for self-improvement.
I feel like Belle gave serious thought to bringing Maurice back to the Beast's castle when she found him unconscious in the woods, but chose to bring him back to their house because she could guess her father was traumatized by getting locked in the dungeon and afraid of the Beast, so Maurice would recover better in surroundings more familiar and with more positive memories.
Jasmine's waist is as believable as Iago's teeth. There's some questions about the princess wearing a harem girl outfit, but, Disney's Aladdin 1992 is not a paragon of cultural sensitivity, they have a whole disclaimer about that now, and also Agrabah is a fictional kingdom.
As for Aladdin lying ... Jasmine only started to fall for him once she guessed he was the boy she met in the marketplace; the boy who put himself at risk to protect a stranger from harm and sympathized with her about the lack of choice she felt she had in her life, while she was the one concealing her true identity. Yes, lying=bad, but that's literally a plot point, that Aladdin has to come clean to Jasmine about who he is for them to have a trusting and healthy relationship. It is *supposed* to be a problem, which drives the story so the characters can grow.

She’s not even old enough to fully comprehend red flags. Literal adults ended up trusting Ursula. So yeah I think I can excuse someone infinitely younger falling for it.
Also I have no problem with people criticizing Jasmine’s design. Her character as a whole? We have a problem. She was spoiled sure but she never wanted to be to begin with. She wanted to be out of that castle and just live and have friendship with people other than a tiger.
She literally calls out Aladdin for lying to her. She also stands up to Jafar even when it’s clear she’s no match for him.
