I love watching your videos, this has me so excided for my June trip to Knife lake. I am headed up there the first week in June. I definitely want to catch some Lakers.
Great! Thank you! Knife in June will be a dream. You might even be going early enough to miss most of the bugs. I wish I could say that I have Knife Lake Trout figured out. We caught one on a spoon, two on a jig with soft plastic, three on a jig and minnow and zero trolling…keep at it and switch up baits/depths until you start catching. Good luck!
@@therealfarwater I saw the video where ya got the laker on the little Cleo, I have several of those trusty spoons. Hopefully the bugs will be out later, given the cool spring so far it looks like we should be able to beat the bugs. Do you think checking out Eddy lake or Amoeber lake is worth it?
Eddy Falls is definitely worth checking out and fishing - I’ve never fished Eddy Lake, so I can’t say. Amoeber is fantastic trout fishing. Island site is 5-star and portage from little knife isn’t too bad
This is making me itch to get back on open water! This last snow storm is another set back. I think the ice will go quick even though we woke up with a fresh foot of snow this morning. It was a very wet and mild snow storm. I am sure you got hit hard as well, if we got it you got it.
The first night was pretty cold, dropped to the high 30s. Daytime highs fluctuated between high 40s-60s. Mid May is my favorite time of year to paddle and one of the best times to chase Lake Trout, as they are relatively shallow
Thanks for sharing your adventure with us! I caught a monster northern on Eddy last year. Eddy falls is definitely worth the paddle to check out. I highly recommend a trip to Amoeber as well. It's a beautiful lake with some huge lakers if you can find them.
You’re welcome! My Amoeber trip was my first video series: Boundary Waters Fishing Report: Fall Canoe Trip Catching Lake Trout, Part 3 ruclips.net/video/7Q-NjJnPfDQ/видео.html
@FarWater Oh nice! I haven't seen that yet, thanks! Maybe we'll cross paths this summer in Ely and I can say hi in person. Hope you have a good padding season!
It really can be hit or miss depending on the water temps. I’ve done 7 of the last 8 years and more often than not we struggle to find walleyes due to cold water. That’s why we’ve switched to lake trout!
Nope; this was last years fishing opener weekend trip: May 13-17, 2022. These lakes are still completely iced up. You should check out my ice report shorts for the most up to date info. I’ll be doing another one tomorrow
@FarWater yeah saw the shorts from earlier, just noticed knife is further north lol. Man this is a little too close for comfort. This is the earliest we've ever made a trip and I'm wondering if we messed up...
@@erikstark3250 you’ll be fine, I would bet money on it. I’m guessing with the warm weather and wind upcoming Moose will be out sometime between the 8-12th. Last year we had a lot more ice and moose was completely open for our paddle in on the 13th.
Thank you! Yep, we've got a while until we can get out on area lakes...I think we're still close to 2' of ice on some lakes. I've done away with the anchors and upgraded to a drift sock. My buddies had a standard bag anchor, the kind you fill with rocks. I've used those in the past but they are a pain in the butt to use - too heavy, get stuck on the bottom, disturb the fish, etc. Bringing along a drift sock allows me to cover larger areas slower, giving me the ability to work them over without spooking the fish.
Life at its best! I use a double blade in the wind, good for trolling upwind, have you tried it? Last summer I caught probably the biggest walleye of my life north of Atikokan. It did get off in the water but I got some shots if you're interested... ruclips.net/video/NOHQ7oshkeg/видео.html
Nice! It's hard to tell how big that fish is by the video, but it's definitely a pig. I don't use double bladed paddles. I am sure they are easier to use in the wind, but I am confident with my bent shaft carbon paddle, which is much easier to manage while fishing. I also don't like constantly being wet from the drip of a kayak paddle, as most of my trips are early or late season when the air and water temps are really low.
Those are some GIGANTIC ham steaks.........heck yea.
Sure were!
Ice out to early spring , the bottleneck bay , just east of eddies falls , is $$$$
I’ll hit it up if I ever go back!!

Yup! 8-10 inches last weekend is finally melting here. It definitely insulated the lakes and pushed ice out back another week or two unfortunatley
What were the temps..............Air temps. This is about a month before I've ever gone......

What kind of fish finder do you have in canoe?

@@tylerpacker6047 yep! It’s coming with me on every trip from now on. Great for vertical jigging lake trout in deep water, especially
Hey what is that little gripper/clamp tool called that you have on the bow of the canoe?
It's actually a product we make called the Grip Anchor! Very cool - here's a video about it:

I'm headed up at the end of May and renting canoes. Would like to mount a rod holder to the canoe for trolling. Wondering what I should be buying??
We sell a Scotty brand gunwhale adaptable rod holder at Piragis. I use a RAM mounts tough claw paired with a rod holder attachment
This is so stupid I was either just ahead of you or just behind you on the same campsite.
That was Sunday the 15th I believe-killer campsite. I wish we would have stayed there rather than stopping for a quick breakfast
Did you shoot that video recently, like in the last week?
Nope, last years trip.
