I am obsessed with all things Boundary Waters, Quetico and Backcountry Fishing and canoe camping. I love to share what I have learned and teach others the glory of backcountry canoe travel, camping and fishing. There is definitely a lack of information out there for those who seek to chase trophy fish in the backcountry on foot or from a canoe, and I plan to fill that void.
My goal is to make these extremely remote locations accessible to others through the sharing of my own personal experiences exploring these undeveloped spaces. Please subscribe to my channel if you are interested in learning more about the pursuit of wild spaces and the feisty fish that inhabit these untouched locations.

Gorgeous Quetico Canoe Trip Through Forest Fire Burn Area
#boundarywaters #canoecamping #canoetrip
Come along as we enjoy our gorgeous Quetico canoe trip through forest fire burn area! It is time for us to shift gears from some intense fishing to cover some miles. We've got a long ways to go and a lot to see on the back half of our trip. With a short three days remaining, it is time to explore the Western side of Quetico that burned so badly during the long drought of summer of 2021.
Part 4 covers days 4-6 of our trip, which shift from a fishing, to a sightseeing focus. On our last three days, we cover 30 miles paddling and 4.2 miles of portaging (12.6 if you consider our need to double-portage). We travel past numerous waterfalls through hundred...

What pack ax & saw do you use? Looking to upgrade
Really good video! Greetings from Europe! I was thinking of buying the humminbird helix 5 chirp gps g2 for 250€. Im asking you if thats a fair price? Is the gen 2 outdated?
The production quality of your video, audio, backdrop, and editing is phenomenal. I’d watch this video just for that, so I’m going to pin it for reference when I start producing videos (planning mostly hunting, rifle/optic reviews, and goofing off outdoor trips around interior Alaska) . I found this video searching to learn to fish lake trout through the ice and I feel like I can confidently hit the ice as a beginner with these baits and tips in mind. Thank you for a high quality video and great information.
@@coolkidmandude1 thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate the support!!
Great info. thank you for the link.
Great videos! What type of transducer arm mount are you using? Is it homemade or commercial? Keep up good work. I love it up there.
@@johnroyal943 thank you!! All the components are from a company called RAM mounts, here’s the link to my video about how I built the setup: ruclips.net/video/_e5RpiVbqQo/видео.htmlsi=ckg2WCSe8MpZPlQi
Had you not cut the fillets off of the tail you would have had an easier time skinning your fish. All you have to do is break the back bone at the tail and continue the filleting process. Learn to zipper your walleye, then it will really be boneless.
@@ntlineman thanks for the tip!!
I really enjoy watching your videos! I am bringing my nephew for our first ever trip to the Boundary Waters next week. 9/22-9/29. We put in on Snowbank and take out on Lake One. I planned to base camp on Insula and day trip to Alice and Fishdance. Do you have any advice on where to locate fish /techniques since we won’t have any electronics? Any other lakes on that route that you really like? Thank you!
@@ryanfarrar9863 thank you for watching! Right now, I would look for weedlines and moving water for fish. Wherever you can find green weeds, fish will be nearby. Insula and Alice are both fantastic multi-species lakes worth fishing. The water temps will likely be dropping in the next week or so, so trolling deep diving rapalas (15-20’) should be effective, too. Good luck!
The best and more honest video
No BS from me!
What kind of fish finder do you have in canoe?

Do you guys ever get skunked? It seems like your bad day of fishing is "dangit, just another pike". 😂
@@kevinharrington3292 haha! We certainly have our tough days on the water, but we can almost always find a couple of small bass or a slimy pike.
ty for the info. if your leader is 25 , what is your main line?

Really liking all your fishing vids, but this one is a double-like! Just bought a new Northwind 18 since my daughter is getting interested! Can’t wait. Already have a NW Solo.

Any chance you can do an electronics video? Nice content. Been watching a bunch the last few days. I’ll get through all of them in no time.

Thanks!
I really appreciated your 'timestamps' of the trip. Planning a similar trip along the same route and it helped get my head around the distances and times for a duo.
@@PurpleFerret you’re welcome! Be careful using us as an example…we move A LOT quicker than your average duo. Most people stop at Agnes after a long first day. Most people also don’t start before sunup…
@@therealfarwater yeah we're not as experienced - and while we intend on starting a bit before sunrise we're planning to stop on Agnes and break the trip into Lac La Croix up so we can fish Agnes & Boulder River a bit before heading into boulder bay
@@PurpleFerret excellent! Sounds like a great plan. If the fishing is slow on Agnes, I’d move on to LLC quickly-tons of great campsites and excellent fishing. The water is always a couple of degrees cooler there, too, so if Agnes is slow it may help change the bite/fish mood. I was in Quetico this week and the water is warm and the blueberries are popping. Find moving water and you’ll find fish. Have a blast! Wear your lifejackets!
How do you get a Motor boat into Basswood lake?
@@dannyb6968 for this trip, we traveled up Moose Lake, Newfound and Sucker to Prairie Portage where we paid to get a tow up and over into Basswood. You can also head in via fall lake and do the wheeled portages into Pipestone and Jackfish Bays but you need a lightweight boat with portage wheels because there isn’t a truck portage to carry you over. If you’re interested, I’d call Vosburg’s on Moose lake, they can set it up for you.
Use a Rapala Deep Tail Dancer in the Purpledescent color. Purple is the last color to disappear in the color spectrum. When fishing deep, if the fish can still see the lure they will hit it.
Yup! I’ve caught plenty of lakers on the purpledescent tail dancer, it’s the second one I mention when I talk about my favorite cranks
Just curious if you have a recommendation for rod holders? Much appreciated
Yup! Also ram mount brand. Tough claw paired with one of their rod holders
Hey I'm just curious what locator battery combo you guys are using for canoe trips. Id like to get some sort of sonar/gps combo for pack trips but am have no experience with the smaller units

So good!! Enjoy!!
Eric, what a pleasure meeting you. You are the MAN when it comes to catching the big ones. We love your content--keep up the great work!
Likewise!! I look forward to hearing about/watchint your Basswood trip
What size Dr spoon are you using?
Can’t remember the size but it’s one smaller than the original. The original is my go-to, but the smaller size works great, too!
That ought to attract the bears
Haha
Another great video! 👍. What make of drift chute/anchor are you using? Did you like it? It looks like it got in the way when landing some of the walleye. Recommendation? Thank you. -Randy
Thank you!! I love using the drift sock, it’s invaluable for slowing down the drift and stabilizing the boat. I’ve since shortened the leash so the fish don’t get caught up when landing them. I can’t remember the brand, but I bought it at fleet farm for like $40. It’s the smallest motorboat sized they offered (12-16’).
@@therealfarwater Thank you for the reply. Much appreciated. I guess the question I should have asked is your drift sock 18", 20", 24" wide or some other width? I suspect a solo vs tandem canoe will react differently along with the wind speed and canoe make that will factor into the drift sock performance. I know from experience that a Wenonah Spirit ll catches more wind than a Souris River Quetico 17. And to me there is a safety trade off in how slow you want the canoe to be vs having some drift sock give in case you get hit be a large wave. I am thinking an 18" or 20" for a Quetico 17. Your thoughts?
8:45 for the beginning of the how to
Geez thanks.
Awesome series! If you don’t mind me asking; how do you portage with all of your sonar and camera equipment without crushing the unit and knocking the lithium ion batteries around?
Thanks!! My kit is actually pretty small, only weighing about 6.5lbs including the lithium ion battery. Here’s a video with the rundown of my setup: ruclips.net/video/_e5RpiVbqQo/видео.htmlsi=HNSk7WRK8lVLhgNU
Awesome fish! Love the underwater shots.
Thank you!
That was fun Eric , Are you doing knife lake this year for 2024 ? ice out soon yes !
Thanks for watching! I am taking a big Quetico trip this year-May 9-22nd to chase lake trout and walleye, mostly. We’ve had a warm winter with very little precipitation-believe it or not all lakes have been ice free for at least a week now!
Pretty impressive! Beautiful day to be out on the water. Your comment about being on "a 450-rod portage in between some lake and some lake" made me smile! Which did you enjoy more that day, the swim or the lunch?!? Thanks for sharing videos of your trips.
Haha, thanks! Swimming was a great break from all the work. Swimming is always my favorite (other than fishing) thing to do on BWCA trips!
Any advice on how to catch these in the BWCA in late may?
Gotta be on big water to find them this size: LLC, Basswood, maybe Knife. Use big baits: spoons, tubes, crankbaits. Best chance is probably to paddle around with a sonar and sharp shoot them in deeper water
A few more years and we will be making Minnesota our final destination! I've never been to the Boundary Waters but have already fallen in love! Cheers and enjoy!
Awesome! No better place in all the world (I assume, anyways)! The BW is a must-visit!!
@@therealfarwater I couldn't agree more! Can't wait to call Minnesota home!

This is the trip with the boys you dream of, everyone gets on some nice fish and the weather is fantastic.
It sure was! Went to Thomas looking for lake trout but found walleye and warm weather!
What camera and sound setup did you use?
For this video, mostly my GoPro 10. My main camera is a Panasonic GH5 but I don’t use that while in the boat, just around camp
Salut les "pogneurs de poisson" fish catchers. Witch apple do you use, i saw it is carbon bent , but witch brand and angle, tancks from Québec

I checked the park regulations and you can photograph or video pictographs. However I figured out you don’t want to reveal your location.
Interesting…they’ve always told me not to photograph the pictographs when I pick up my permit at the ranger station
What electronic fish locators are you using? Does the transducer shoot through the hull?
Best Fish Finder 2021: Humminbird Helix 5 G2 with RAM Mounts setup ruclips.net/video/_e5RpiVbqQo/видео.html
Humminbird helix 5 with the standard open water transducer, Dakotah lithium battery and a series of RAM mounts to mount to the canoe without drilling
Dude you were flying at 21:03 can I ask what canoe you were using?
Northstar Northwind Solo!
You took a very long way from Rebecca Falls to Curtain Falls. I was trying to follow along with my McKenzie #29 and couldn’t. You may have added some additional portages in your journey.
We intentionally took a detour through some lakes we hadn’t seen before to check out the fire damage. That took us past curtain to Rebecca where we stayed on night, then back to Crooked past Curtain again…sorry, I know it was confusing, I just didn’t want to announce the name of the lake we had spectacular lake trout fishing the first two days of the trip
Glad you didn't name that lake - it was fun to sleuth it out!
Thanks for telling everyone I fell..
It happens to everyone, you’re no less of a legend for falling. At least I didn’t tell them about all the crying…
@@therealfarwater So much crying
To be fair those were some rough portages lol. I can't see anyone getting through there without a scratch.
Thanks for sharing your trips. I really miss my wilderness trips, sure wish i could do it again!!
Thanks for watching! I've got a lot more coming so stay tuned!
Awesome videos! Love bwca! Ive been going every year for the past 20. Would love to see how your camp is set up, and cooking. Its always interesting how everyone has there one way of doing things.
Thank you for watching and thank you for the feedback! I plan on doing a lot more filming of "camp life" in the future. I got a really nice tripod I am excited to bring along and get more comfortable shooting footage with my main camera, rather than just the gopro footage from the boat. Twas a glorious day!
Hey FarWater, I've been watching your videos for a while now and really enjoy them. I spent a few years in northern Minnesota when I was a kid and my family took multiple canoe trips to Quetico. We launched at Pickerel Lake and would hit Bisk, Rawn, and Art lakes, catching walleye, northerns, and smallies. Those are some of my favorite childhood memories. Anyway, thanks for recording your adventures - I've enjoyed watching you fish the north country.
Thank you for watching and sharing your love of Quetico! I hadn't visited the park until I moved up here in 2019 and I'm absolutely hooked (pun intended)! I've got a lot more Quetico content coming your way!
Awesome video! What's that contraption you're using to slow down drifting? Seems to work well
A simple drift sock designed for motorboats. This is the smallest size I could find-designed for motorboats 12-14’ in length. It has been a game changer for us, much more effective than an anchor and infinitely easier to use
@@therealfarwater I'll have to check that out, thank you!
@@TheTubemaster007 totally worth the $40. I got mine at fleet farm, I believe. Packs down small and doesn’t spook the fish like a traditional anchor.
