- Don't you wish your tile installer offered you the option to install a heated floor system in your shower? Well, odds are he didn't know about it because he isn't WATCHING TILECOACH ON RUclips!!! So...you may need to share this video with him. Or, if you are a tile installer you may need to watch this video so you can offer it as one of your upgrades. Heated tile floors, especially in the colder climates is an energy efficient way to produce the most comfortable heat you will ever feel! Instead of forcing hot, dry, air out of heat ducts-- radiant heat warms from the floor up. Not only will your tile floor be warm and cozy, but the whole bathroom will be heated.
Even in the Sacramento valley where we live and outside temperatures reach over 100 degrees in the summer, we usually leave our heated floors on in the bathrooms from late October to April -- which is over 7 months out of the year that they are in use.
This video covers the entire process, from the installation of the membrane to the layout of the cable. The only thing not covered in this video (because we have not installed it yet) is the thermostat hook up. Once I get that video done, I will post a link here so you can see it. Unless I forget to. Which is likely.

Damn hell nah. Time consuming and must be expensive
When using the multi meter always ensure that only the probes are touching the wire to make contact, if you use your fingers to press the wire onto the probe then you may get false readings or inaccurate readings. Best to use the probe clips supplied with most meter 😉, great video and brilliant explanation👍

It's easy just use the right mortar
We always run a pencil or sharpie on the ditra to get the layout 3 studs apart so you don’t have to problem solve when you’re running the actual wire, love your vids 👍🏼
Nice bathroom, & liked how you started the heating run over again when it wasn’t going the way you wanted it.....
Sometimes it takes a few tries to get a good plan layout for the floor heating wire/cable, & nothing wrong with starting over. I’ve actually seen some jobs where ppl don’t want to & keep going & then wonder why there’s issues later on 🤦🏼♂️

Thanks for the video! I prefer CBP Heatmatrix mat (installing warm wire), as the schluter wire isn't readily available locally and the wire that is doesn't seat in to the ditra mat as well as the heatmatrix mat. Heated bench and shower floor is definitely on my wish list! in 2015 I installed wire in a shower floor, up the bench and all three walls surrounding the bench...client didn't want to ever touch cold tile.
I’m sure any tile installer can pick apart anything that you do based on location of states or country…
But in Northern California all of your techniques are properly….

As I'm about to subcontract for a master bathroom remodelling including heated floor not in the shower , i'm nervous about it, no way of ever knowing for sure what to expect, price alone is no longer a determinant. referrals neither.

I didn't see you do the MegaOhms test (1k megaOhms meter) required for warranty and test purposes. Love your videos and have had same concerns with the products you test. Ive done just a few schluter heat cables and been following their instructions to the dot. Just curious if you've done that test.im in bay area, maybe we'll meet one day. 😊 Awesome work you do!

Very nice install. When checking impedance on the wires, it is important to not touch the conductors with bare fingers as it will give you a false reading.

Would you be able to put pebble tile floors in the shower over this? I’ve seen some articles about which tiles do best, but I haven’t been able to find anything that says whether or not the tile with the individual pebbles would work well with this heating application. Love the channel, thanks!

Holding the probes on the multi meter with your bare skin changes the resistance. You are continuity

If you see how much wire will fit in a square foot, with correct spacing and so forth, it may work well to lay the wire down one time. I haven't tried it yet, usually just rely on faith, but it seems like it could help.

Love the videos, man and the two grooves on the seat to take the wire up to the seat was genius good tip. However, you have homeowners watching your videos. Which means they think they can do all of this. I charge triple when I have to go back because the homeowner finally realized that you have to be skilled in this trade to do it. again I’m a fan but you’re charging homeowners extra money. Which I don’t mind but I do feel bad for the homeowners sometimes.
That looks like it’ll be sweet when it’s done! Do you recommend that Ditra Heat over other heated floor systems? I know you said those other ones were a pain to use, but we’re they effective?
I have been following your videos to help me with my new bathroom build, i am building a curbless shower in the basement. I have cut out concrete and created good slope to the center of the shower floor and have instaled a round schulter drain. I think all is going well so far.
I am planning to install ditra heat in the main bathroom floor and curious if I can still run the heat membrane into the shower over the drain then membrane over everything (I did not compensate for the hieght of the ditra) or should I stop at the shower door with the dirta then transition to my morter bed with some thinset and membrane over all?
I am considering running heat to my bench.
Is this different going into the shower and outside of the shower? Do they have different wiring for wet floors via dry floors. How hard it this to run the wiring to the electrical source if you don't have any thing set up for this? This is very interesting.
My floor is a combination of deck mud and plywood. Is the mapie ultraflex 2 good to put down the ditra heat membrane on plywood

Do you use an epoxy or hot mop and pre- slope under the finished float on original wooden subfloor or does the ditra band material go on floated walls and floor is water proof enough? Thanks for the info👍
That's different but cool issac & crew. I won'be able to do my jobs for awhile intil i'm healed up. Short story was involved in a bad crash on my harley. Anyhow bike is replaceable. Lucky yo be alive. All the years been doing tile. I had a friend do my front bathroom as i redid (found mol pipe waz leaking in wall & this was done over 30 years ago. But anyhow not sure if i made the right call on this? The qay i was taught is when laying tile in a bathroom you always start in the middle & work your way out? Yes or no on this? But my friend decides to start in corner. I didn't notice until i noticed where he started already payed him but i ripped out his work was i wrong on doing this or right? Just curious on how you would of done. Middle or start in corner?
In which stage is it appropriate to create slopes bathroom? before or after after heating floor system?
The mortar that you use is it the same as the one you use to lay tile ? On the mortar bed

Issac ! Why did you change your method of membrane/waterproofing first then float ? I thought the whole point of floating was to give you the nice flat plane for setting the tile ?

Can you install Schluter®-Shower System over a hydronic floor heating systems? I'm building a 7x7 shower/freestanding tube curb less wet room, with tile 7' up the walls. My other question is which drain to you recommend, Schluter®-
KERDI-DRAIN or Schluter®-KERDI-LINE?
Have you ever take mud bed down to 1/4 inch around the drain? Any problems?

Getting ready to do 2 - 300 sq ft zones with 1 shower and inspector added flood test to my list.
Did my shower bench/floor and honestly I wish I had two different thermostats, one for the main floor area and one for the shower area because it's still not warm enough compared to the hot water, oh and I wish I did my bench walls as well, I have to do that on the next house because I'm not tearing this out but just a little tip for anyone out there who wants the ultimate heated shower
Hey Isaac I’m Jesus I live in Orange County southern Ca I have a question I do home remodeling out here I usually float my walls with metal lathe and spec mix mortar cement ,,and also Hotmop my shower pans ,,,I want to try a different methods quicker but also need super water proof ,,,my question is if I’m not installing a heated shower pan can I instal forra directy to sub floor or what steps do I need to take or what other waterproof system do you recommend to do my subfloor on my shower pan???

I tought ditra was waterproof so why do you need to cover it with kerdi ? Or is it because the wires can't get wet ?

Once removing the old tile that doesn’t have a decoupling layer, just thin set, and then installing a new floor with ditra-heat, how much higher will the top of the tile be? I’m wondering by how much I’ll need to shorten/raise my door trim to accommodate a heated tile floor. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Can you do heated shower if you have central square drain with slope drainage in a 38"x65" shower not next to wall drain?
I don't think that may will lay flat with the different angles to it.
Question: Assuming that just the bathroom is heated, it likely means that the floor thickness will change how is that step change handled between rooms? It seems like regardless of what type of transition strip is used, that 1/4" step up may trip people. No?
We installed large format tile and just had a transition made out of the tile because we wanted no humps so the Roombas could get around

Why do you not comb the adesive under the mat all in the one detection .would it not trap air ?
It is extremely hard to trap air under the mats, it isn't rigid like tile and the air rolls out from the mat as you push it down. I would still go directional though.
don't touch the multimeter leads when measuring anything, esp resistance - it can skew the readings. also, aren't you supposed to take a reading of the line resistance again after installation?
Most people have a hand-to-hand resistance of 200k to 1M Ohms. When you're measuring 9.3Ohms, there would be zero difference between holding the leads or not.
Question about weather to use modified or unmodified for large format 24x48 porcelain tile over the dita heat?
You can use either type of thinset under the tile. Modified is always better due to the way it dries and cures.
However Where Isaac screwed up is using UNAPPROVED Modified thinset underneath Ditra and Kerdi. The ONLY Modified Thinset approved by Schluter underneath Ditra and Kerdi is their Own ALLSET product. HIs mistake is a big no- no.
But, Stay Tuned. This shower will eventually show up in his "FAILED SHOWER VIDEOS" where he blames all of his failures on Schluter Systems, when in reality, it is clearly in the instruction book that comes with the products, that he failed to read or memorize. Perhaps he was asleep in the Schluter LEVEL 1 Workshop??
I want to use a schluter linear drain (need the 48" offset model and schluter only one that makes it)...but I think NobleSeal ts is a better product than the schluter membrane. Would like to use the NobelSeal on the shower floor and walls. Also thinking about using the Noble Bond EXT and NobleSealant 150 for the seams vs modified thinset. Do you think I would have any issues with this combination (schluter drain & noble membrane? Have you ever used or tested NobleSeal TS using NobleBond EXT and NobleSealant 150? Should I still use ardex 8+9 on the seams?
Nobel bond EXT is for dry areas only ....I believe.
@@TileCoach Nah. They have videos on it. Also called them today to confirm. The rep I talked to said he actually prefers the ext because it can stretch a little with movement whereas mortar will tear the fibers. Would love to see you give it a shot and review.
Some other info from the rep.
1. Said use the new noblesealant 250 over the 150 to seam the sheets together. Said it cures stronger
2. (After taking off his corporate Noble hat) Said Nobleseal TS membrane should work fine with the schluter drain. Just put the TS over the schluter membrane and use the sealant 250 on the 2" overlap.
3. He personally likes horizontal seams vs vertical. Like you are shingling a roof.
This is just info from a rep though. I'd rather get the real story from the Tile Coach!
PROTIP: Always install minimum of 3 temperature probes so you have 2 more as back up in case the first two probes fail.

Will Schluter still warranty the install if you use Ultraflex 2 instead of Allset, which is Schluter made thinset? Also, why can't you put the ditra membrane first on the floor and then put the ditra heat on top? Seems like a way more waterproof installation. Can't imagine what floating with thinset would cost compared to sand and cement which does not cost much at all. If i had a house that i cared enough about, i would mud the walls first the old school way with concrete, lime and lathe and then cement the pan and the floors with sand and cement. Finally i would put Kerdi over all that and it might outlast the world.
NO THEY WILL NOT WARRANTY THE MAPEI MODIFIED THINSET UNDER DITRA AND/OR KERDI. THIS IS AN EPIC FAILURE!! This shower will inevitably end up on Isaacs future videos where "I BUILT THIS SCHLUTER SHOWER AND IT FAILED" Videos, where he blames all of his problems on Schluter, but he didn't read the instruction book that came with the Ditra, and he must have been asleep in the Level 1 Schluter Workshop
Anybody know the real reason you can't self level over ditra heat and then tile? Shluter says you can float tiles with mortar but it would be so much easier to just pour a couple buckets of self level. The space in question is about 4 X 6' concrete substrate. 8x8" octagon tile. I know I know, it was supposed to be leveled first but that boat has sailed. Anybody try it and or have issues with doing that? Thanks in advance.

Have you guys ever capped a heated kerdi bench with a granite or quartz slab? Are they too thick to heat nicely or quickly? Thx in advance for comment if anyone has.
it will work fine with a capped bench. It just takes longer to heat up due to the thickness. While we don't do a whole lot of showers with heat on the floor or benches (Less than 10% of the time) we cap nearly every shower bench (about 95%) so when they ARE heated, we've had plenty of experience putting 2 cm granite, quartz or carrera marble or other similar surfaces over top of ditra heat and not had a single problem to date
Why not just install the Kerdi board if your gonna Kerdi membrane anyway?

Did anyone mention that the ohms when you hold the wires with your fingers will alter your results? Never check ohms using you fingers. It reads through your body. Try to use alligator clips or somehow hold the leads to the conductors only with our any other surface contact.

Schluter heater floor installs come with three types of warranties: none, 10 year, 15 year. This would likely qualify for 10 if paper work is submitted correctly. The 15 year requires a special meter.
The Whole job will never be warranted. He screwed up earlier with using Mapei Modified thinset underneath the Ditra. NOT APPROVED

Yep, I came to the comments @ 9:00 to see if anyone was thinking the same. Guess the budget allows for extra cable. Nice transition from floor to bench though.
Actually, it turns the shower into a Turkish hamam, if you want to use it as a hamam. Meaning sit on the heated bench or ideally lay on it if its big enough, relax (and sweat) 30 min or so and then a good scrub and exfoliation.

finally you started to do it right - install your kerdi right behind the tile, but not like you always did before- all your MUD on top of it 😂
Great job! However, every shower I’ve torn out, there’s not been a lot of moisture on the walls even when not waterproofed.
I believe in doing things right but I prefer a paint on waterproofer for the walls with band on corners and seams. This just seems like such an overkill.
It happens in the first foot off the shower floor. If you paint it on, how do you know you don't breach the liquid based waterproofer, when you use a Notched trowel in the next step with sharp teeth to butter up and comb your walls??? That rubber is like a skin...a membrane. Take a notched trowel and run it up and down your bare legs and see what happens.
why would you heat a floor or a Bench in a shower ?
Can anyone help me. I am doing this in my shower but I cannot fine any video or instructions that tell me how to properly install the round drain cover. Does it all get installed above the membrane or does the round flange that the height adjustment on the drain cover fits in to go under the membrane?

Running that wire looks like such a brain puzzle, I love doing things that make you have to use your brain to the max.
For me, the hot water hitting the shower floor seems to heat it up quite well.
But hey, I'm not the one spending the extra money.
