You can find fresh banana leaves from Mexican grocery shops. And we do have banana leaf rice meals in south India and thali meals towards the north. many Indian restuarants inthe US serve both and tends to go the North Indian way and hence banana leaf rice meals are rare. I suggest you try the meals during Onam or pongal and they might have,.

Banana leaf meal is very common in India(Tamilnadu, Kerala,Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka) and not just for rice meal even for just breakfast or any other meals. The taste is definitely different when eaten from a banana leaf since when hot food is served on a banana leaf it tends to change colour and even add flavour.
Folding the banana leaf- my understanding is that its based on the occasion. Its folded inwards when its a happy occasion say a wedding meaning let good ness come to you vs fold outwards say in a funeral meaning let the grief go away from you.

Banana leaf meals are everywhere in Kerala, Tamilnadu, Karntaka, Andhra and Sri Lanka. It's also available in Dubai/UAE and other Gulf countries in south Indian restaurants. Philipino also use Banana leaf meals. Kamayan is a traditional Filipino feast, food is prepared and arranged along banana leaves for a group to eat entirely by hand. Banana leaf meals served all year around in Tamil , Andhra and Kerala restaurants. During Vishu festival of kerala it's called sadhya but sadhya is all vegetarian.

Really nice you guys enjoyed the 'yela sapadu' - leaf meal - so much. Nice to see your kids again. They are so wonderful. But somewhat sad to see you had to make do with the frozen and thawed leaves that were available - looked ancient and dried off, darkened and curled at the edges. In India we are blessed to eat on fresh green leaves. But you guys enjoyed eating on the leaves nonetheless, and that's what counts! Love to see Rachel enjoying it! And yes, the leaf is usually folded inwards and you guys did it beautifully straight into a bag. Neat! I think one of the reasons it's folded inward is to show respect to the person sitting opposite you, so as to close the used leaf away from them (table manners). The menu was mouth watering! Finally, thanks to Bezawada for being so sportive. Love your videos! Mikka Nandri!

Kudos to Rachel for overcoming the embarrassing ask 😂 and yes, meals are served in banana leaves in the south of India. At my place we have a small banana tree and cut leaves from it to serve for all religions occassions. Like today, Tamil New Year (so great timing guys!) Thali is a term used for North Indian meals. In South India we just say meals and they're usually served on banana leaves!
Inwards it is! Good job Rachel. Folding the leaves inwards means you had a satisfying, happy meal. The opposite is for not so good occasions or to indicate you weren't happy I guess. Leave it to fellow Indians and Malays to corroborate.

Definitely the flavour of the food changes. I am from Tamil Nadu and I eat mostly on a banana leaf. when you put rice and sambar over it and mix it well on the leaf, the pores of leaf has some fluids which secretes & mixes with our food and it gives a natural flavour which is good for health also.
And it is definitely not awkward to eat on a leaf, after all we eat other veggies too, so leaves are part of the eatables only. why not place food on it and eat.

Nice! Totally agree on banana leaf and eating with hand makes food taste so much better -- banana leaf might be the experience, and eating with hand I think might be that it mixes the food/combines the flavors better than with fork/spoon. If you're looking for banana leaf meals, then some other cultures also have meals usually wrapped in banana leaf. Search for "Pothichoru" for Kerela meal, or "Lamprias" or "Lumprice" for Sri Lankan meal. In the East Bay area, there seems to be Kadupul Sri Lankan restaurant thaat serves lamprias in banana leaf (I'm not from the area and this is just a quick Google search). Enjoyed the video.

This video is beautiful. From Tamil Nadu ( I was in the UK and Canada 20 years back) .... nevertheless, folding the banana leaf outwards is done in death/condolence-based circumstances. Folding inwards, means, I like it and will be back again.
When hot food is place on a banana leaf, a certain different flavour arises from the food, (for North Americans/Europeans/and from those down under, they can corelate it to smoked or barbecued food things). Thanks for sharing this video. I enjoyed it

Fast forward to previous and current decade, restaurants modified it to offer it as thali in different forms. Originally its the same.

@kumaarfamily Yes…they do have banana leaf Thalis in India…especially down south! As a matter of fact some restaurants in Kerala serves everything on banana leaf and when I travel to India to my ancestral house we only use banana leave instead of plates…😋😋😋

In Venezuela we hve a dish called ayaca made out of cornmeal dough filled with meat, pork or chicken and veggies and wrapped and tied in banana leaves and and then boiled. It's served during the Xmas season and eaten from the babana leaves. The banan leaves give it its special flavor and taste, absolutely delicious :-)

Banana leaf meals are very popular for occasions and feasting due to easy maintenance and zero wastage....
The yellow curry in the thali is made with curd or butter milk and cooked with veggies and it's called Majjige huli in Kannada

There are some Indian stores in the Bay area specifically near San Jose which sell fresh banana leaves, at least during Indian festivals. I got some last time and it was amazing to eat on them

Also please try to visit deevan street in Chicago and try Kerala rice dishes and Tamil Nadu rice dishes in South Indian restaurants. Your family will really like the food.
