    English text:
    The Dreadful Story of Pauline and the Matches
    Mamma and Nurse went out one day,
    And left Pauline alone at play;
    Around the room she gayly sprung,
    Clapp'd her hands, and danced, and sung.,
    Now, on the table close at hand,
    A box of matches chanced to stand,
    And kind Mamma and Nurse had told her,
    That if she touched them they would scold her;
    But Pauline said, "Oh, what a pity!
    For, when they burn, it is so pretty;
    They crackle so, and spit, and flame;
    And Mamma often burns the same.
    I'll just light a match or two
    As I have often seen my mother do."
    When Minz and Maunz, the pussy-cats, heard this
    They held up their paws and began to hiss. -
    "Meow!!" they said, "me-ow, me-o!
    You'll burn to death, if you do so,
    Your parents have forbidden you, you know."
    But Pauline would not take advice,
    She lit a match, it was so nice!
    It crackled so, it burned so clear,-
    Exactly like the picture here.
    She jumped for joy and ran about,
    And was too pleased to put it out.
    When Minz and Maunz, the little cats, saw this,
    They said, "Oh, naughty, naughty Miss!""
    And stretched their claws,
    And raised their paws;
    "Tis very, very wrong, you know;
    Me-ow, me-o, me-ow, me-o!
    You will be burnt if you do so,
    our mother has forbidden you, you know. "
    Now see! oh! see, what a dreadful thing
    The fire has caught her apron-string;
    Her apron burns, her arms, her hair;
    She burns all over, everywhere.
    Then how the pussy-cats did mew
    What else, poor pussies, could they do?
    They screamed for help, 'twas all in vain,
    I So then, they said, "We'll scream again.
    Make haste, make haste! me-ow! me-o!
    She'll burn to death,- we told her so."
    So she was burnt with all her clothes,
    And arms and hands, and eyes and nose;
    Till she had nothing more to lose
    Except her little scarlet shoes;
    And nothing else but these was found
    Among her ashes on the ground.
    And when hen the good cats sat beside
    The smoking ashes, how they cried!
    "Me-ow me-o! ! Me-ow, me-oo! !
    What will Mamma and Nursy do?"
    Their tears ran down their cheeks so fast.
    They made a little pond at last.

    These vivid scenes transport me back to when I was a young child in the late 60’s, looking through the book, to what I can only describe as odd, if not slightly disturbing.

      I think those stories are a bit like Marmite. People were either scared or loved them. I loved them, as an example, despite sucking my thumb I wasn't scared of the Conrad story

    Maybe if the cats could have actually spoken English to her, she would have paid attention... she probably just heard a lot of yowling. For most cat owners, that normally means "I'm hungry! Feed me!"

      English probably wouldn't have worked, but German might 😉

    I made an alternate translation for my accuracy-loving friend.
    The Really Sad Story with the Matchbox
    Once, Pauline's parents both went out,
    Left her alone, without a doubt.
    As happy as could be, she sang
    and danced, and round the room she sprang,
    till suddenly, what should she see?
    A matchbox, pretty as can be.
    "Oh!" she soon said. "This gives me joy!
    It looks like a fantastic toy!
    I'll quickly light a match for fun,
    The way my mother's often done!"
    And Minz and Maunz, the cats,
    Both quickly told her "That's
    Forbidden by your father!"
    They raised their paws, no bother.
    "Meow, meow, it isn't right!
    Leave it alone or you'll burn bright!"
    Pauline did not listen at all
    As she lit up a match so small,
    And oh! how it did burn and glow,
    As this fine picture here does show.
    Pauline was happy as could be,
    And leapt around, so full of glee.
    And Minz and Maunz, the cats,
    Both quickly told her "That's
    Forbidden by your mother!"
    They raised their paws another
    Time and cried, "Mew, it isn't right!
    Toss it away or you'll burn bright!"
    And soon, the flame did grab her dress,
    Her apron, too, oh, what distress!
    It burned her hands and burned her hair,
    It burned the whole girl, then and there!
    And Minz and Maunz both shouted:
    "It's what we never doubted!
    Someone, someone, come and help!
    The child is burning!" they did yelp.
    "Meow! Meow! Meow! Meow!
    Please, someone come and help her now!"
    But soon all of Pauline had burned,
    Her skin and hair to ash had turned.
    A pile of ash was left behind,
    Along with her two shoes so fine.
    And Minz and Maunz are sobbing,
    Their little hearts a-throbbing.
    "Me-ow! Me-oh! Me-ow! Me-oh!
    Her parents will cry, too, we know."
    And as they cried, their tears did make
    A tiny little indoor lake.
