The Clutch Pedal Slams To the Floor!

- Опубликовано: 16 май 2023
- This MK4 GTI has the clutch pedal slamming to the floor. This is likely the slave cylinder failing. For this one, the transmission needs to be removed from the GTI to replace it. Since we are that close, I will also be doing timing chains on this VR6 #shorts #vr6 #humblemechanic

Had this happen on my 240SX many moons ago, limped it home and found the slave cyl blown out. Installed new one, blew immediately. Swapped that with another, also blew out immediately. Figured out the pivot ball for the release fork snapped off. Trans had to come off, $600 job for a $10 part. Man, that sucked.
My slave cylinder died on my first car, a 1990 Geo Prizm hatchback, while stopped at a busy stoplight. Clutch when straight to the ground. Turned off the car, put it in first, light turned green, turned on the car and went. It was a shitty drive home lol. Loved that little beater of a car.
Broke my fork when the clutch when out on one of my Hondas. Couldn't belive how hard it was to find a clutch fork for that car. Luckily a shop I used to hang UT at had one laying around for whatever random reason.
Had the exact same thing happen when i had a 91 240sx , I did it myself but it sucked pulling the trans immediately back out.
Had the same happen to my 03’ 350z when I first got it, went to do a 1-2 shift and pedal went straight to the floor, luckily I was only a mile from the house, so I started it in 3rd and was able to limp her home, 9 hours of work over 2 days getting that transmission of for the first time just to replace a $18 pivot ball, but it’s such a common issue on those they make a chromoly steel replacement

"the extra pedal" lmfao
;)
Well.. in america it is an extra pedal😂
Exactly 😆
In my country it's called "de embrayage"@@HumbleMechanic
My first thought was it ain't extra if you can't drive without it lol... But you also kinda can if you're good at driving stick
My clutch outlived the rod bearings at 600k km
I thought that 450kkm was a lot to do on one clutch
@@turbobrowar2170 not if you drive very little in the city.
Love those VR6 gtis
Fantastic and un-noticed sarcasm
I do love a MK4 Golf!
That happen to me, problem fixed by replacing the clutch master cylinder.
What about the slave cylinder
how you did it
We all all know what that STUUU TUTUTUTU noise was... Ain't fooling us 😉 #BOV
if
only it had a turbo
@@747simmer4 i thought the GTIs had a turbo?
@@thecoolguy9364 they do. but this one is a mk4 gti so i assume it has the vr6
@@747simmer41.8 turbo 20v
@@TriekMan oh yeaaa, forgot about that
That’s a sweet looking vr6!
That’s the built in turbo, it’s actually a good thing
Clutch slave cylinder inside the gearbox is exactly what that is
I got a free Nissan d21 because the clutch was stuck on the floor and the couple thought it needed a transmission. $11 slave cylinder and I drove it home. It sat in their driveway 10 years because of it.😂
That noise of the pedal slapping the firewall brings back memories…
I had an 89’ prelude, and the brake master cylinder had a leak. It would be random but some days my pedal would do that exact thing if you even tapped it with your toe…
manual swapped my prelude a few weeks ago! so of course heard this happen a bunch while bleeding the clutch
If that didn't fix it there's a plastic piece called over center spring mount they sell it on ecs tuning they tend to break after awhile it's plastic
Same thing happened with my BMW E34 except for it was a line from the fluid reservoir to the clutch master cylinder
Got a golf 4 too, 385.000km
You’re gonna see a lot of these problems
@@goonygaming3390 you have zero idea what ur on about kid😂
Mines at 175k miles, and I just had to get a whole new transmission after my old one blew up
@@justussneary19 270k miles on mine, runs like its still 1999. just do the maintenance.
Can you do a tutorial of how you changed the release bearing? I need some help on that
Its not so much an extra pedal than most cars are missing this essential best feature
I had the clutch, flywheel and drive shaft replaced on my 99' mk4 golf TDI and it ain't come cheap. Now it's at a body shop to get a new passenger side sill. The rust ate it entirely.
Unlucky! Mk4 golf floorpans and sills are usually amazing. I have a '98 mk4 1.4 ahw that has spent it's whole life in the UK. Salt roads and a lot of rain yet there is not a spec of rust on the car.
Had this happen on my MK4, it was real fun floating gears 40km back home and to my mechanic, he was really surprised that I made and then that I can shift without a clutch haha
That happened to me on my mk5 right after I bought it, thankfully it just needed new brake/clutch fluid (they share a reservoir)
Did the clutch come back ?
@@Warkilla007 25k miles later, clutch is still fine. I even tuned it up to around 300lbft torque and it still holds no problem.
Damn, thats a sweet looking GTI.
The clutch pedal aggressively hitting the firewall gives me PTSD from when I had to do multiple clutch master cylinders on 7th gen accords. Hands down one of the worst jobs I’ve ever done. I’m lucky because I have teeny hands and long fingers and can fit my hand in the area where the body, firewall, and clutch master cylinder all connect
New fear for my MK4
That's some real fine engineering right there😂
Concentric slaves? Just about everything with a manual uses them now and for years.
I love your videos they help me to learn about the vehicles I work on and am passionate about
My Mk6 TDI did that last year at around 80,000 miles. I did a slight upgrade while I was in there
My 14 Jetta tdi has been sitting like this for about a year now with a cover on it. The pedal goes to the floor, and I can go through the gears while the car is running, without the clutch pedal working
Hey my clutch did this once. Was easy to find the problem because everything broke. the clutch blew into peices and bearing was roast and at pressure plate and flywheel went to shit as well. O don't forget about the clutch slave cylinder as well.
Sounds and works just fine
The clutch master cylinder
I guess if youre getting at the clutch may as well do them chains too. In my Jetta I'm probably going to put in a clutch while im there doing the chains. Just easier.
100% will be doing chains
ALWAYS put a clutch kit in a car whenever you seperate engine from manual trans. You've already gotten access to it you might as well change it while you're in there.
Always? No
@@HumbleMechanicin most cases why not
Thought it was on belts not chains?
This happened to my 95 VR6 GTI as well. I didn't have any visible links though, so just went ahead and replaced both master and slave cylinders.
had this exact issue at 96000 km in a 2015 gti
Standard on the 6 speed input shaft bearing and casing wear the feedback back through the clutch cauaes the slave to wear.
This happened on my mk4 as well, but it was the pedal itself that was broken. The release bearing failed and the balls came out and jammed the clutch release mechanism and made the clutch pedal rock hard. In trying to get the card home, I was pressing on the pedal so hard that one of the welds on the pedal failed.
This was on the older 02K gearbox.
Just sold my 03 TDI 5 speed new beetle ❤ 390k miles with many ECS goodies, i miss her already.
Replace when transmission is out. At least quote them for it. Saves money long run
Agreed. Even if it looks fine for what an absolute pain in the ass it is to get to it's worth replacing.
Edit: though in this case the bearing to be shimmed is accessed under a cover on the end of the gearbox.
Ooh, had that happen to me once while I was driving. Was crazy scary... :D
i had this same thing. it was the pusher stick that is shapped like a finger which pushes the rod through the gearbox and onto the clutch. The finger cracked after years and years of use. The mechanics were really surprised because it was such a odd failure. They thought it was the clutch slave or clutch install failture which they did. But it turns out it was a completely new issue.
Just did a set of chains on an 07 passat. I don't know how you volkswagen guys work on these things so often. They make my brain itch 😂
Lol that’s fair
Yup... My VW Caddy did this, left me stranded in the middle of nowhere 🤗
Oh damn! The extra pedal quit working. Time to open that hood and go where the magic happens.
“Here let me shi- OH LAWD”
I miss my mk4 gti.
One day I did a dry pavement burnout in my e36, next day got in and the pedal did exactly that. It was only my slave cyl though
My dream car
Getting timing chains done on my 92 Lincoln town car, after that gonna save some hydraulics 😎
This happened on my MK4 Jetta but it was the brake master cylinder. If I had my foot resting on the clutch the littlest bit and hit the brakes it would suck it right to the floor 😂
200,000 miles? That’s CUTE!
My MK4 Golf TDI has 385,000ish miles on the clock! And only it’s second clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing.
I had a 140,000 mile MK4 Jetta, I couldn't put it in the gear anymore, thought it was the slave cylinder or bearing, sold the car to a friend for 500 bucks because I couldn't afford to fix it at the time. When he pulled the transmission off, the pressure plate had three teeth just broken straight off and we're just floating around in the transmission. Have you ever seen this before? He said in all his years doing automotive mechanics, he'd never seen that happen to a pressure plate
This happened to my mk6 golf tdi, i pressure bled the clutch and it was good to go. It was super annoying to drive though, had to lift up the pedal after every shift
Lmao as soon as i saw that pedal hit the deck that hard i thought "hey thats a VW" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 such a weirdly specific vw thing.
Even in every other vehicles that have had failing clutch systems, ive never quite had them SLAM to the floor board quite like that if at all
My mk4 vr6 used to blow its slave cylinder on the clutch every 5k miles. That sunken peddle brings back so many bad memories of that car😂 still best car I've ever owned
This happened to my car last sunday exept it was the clutch cable. all fixed now thankfully
Same problem on my probe. I was told it was something to do with the crutch assembly.
The extra pedal 😄
;)
Had a similar situation with a 2003 beetle recently and the clutch release arm had snapped at its weakest point right where it touches the release bearing. The clutch was fine. I guess it just failed due to fatigue, however, I replaced everything.
Yeah exactly what happened with my fiat 500t
Man sure would love your help with my transmission
That was the biggest issue i had with my audi a3, had the slave cylinder go and the connection to the master cylinder randomly popped off .
Smart to do the chain while in there. That’s another 200k with good maintenance and several years of motoring.
Thu fluid leaked out completely ,the clutch alave was leaking above the bell housing.
I had the o-ring in the clutch bearing assembly on my mk7 fail in the middle of winter, as a massive snowstorm was rolling in. Car had 20,000 miles on it, so I was a little furious.
for those thinking this is a gti mk4 golf, its not. its an r32 or a 4motion v6 due to the engine clip showing the vw vr6 engine and due to the sound of the car
This car is a Brazil built US spec GTI. They labeled it a GTI in the NAR
@@HumbleMechanic
I was wondering! Is it also AWD like the UK/Euro spec Golf R32?
I became wayyyy too good at changing slave cylinders in my na miata. Always keep a spare in the passenger floorboard, and my 8mm wrench in the center console. 5 minutes was my quickest change. I chalk it down to bad part manufacturing because i havent replaced one in 3 years
Happened to me once with my 2015 tsi. It was a defective part so I got it replaced under warranty. Definitely not fun waiting on the side of the road for an hour though.
I just had I similar problem on a wrx it just needed a clutch fluid line. There was a Crack and air got In to the system.
Had same problem on a Peugeot 308 checked everything and it turned out pedal had just popped off the end of the master cylinder and clipped it back in good as new
OBS Ford does that but its just a plastic bushing connected to the pedal right by your feet. $5 replacement too
That's a pedal box issue. Not related.
Throw out bearing had the same issue on my vr6
I can smell the interior that car from here. Whole pack of Crayola.
Same thing happened to my Mk6 Fiesta.
Yeh i let amco change my fiat clutch once, cost me the price of a honda beat after tax and title, came out making that same noise…. Learned a lot this january 😅
Apparently this is a really common issue among mk iv’s. I got it on my beetle and there had to be like 20 posts on vwvortex for jettas and golfs
American said “the extra pedal is doing this” 🤣🤣🤣💀
Some get the joke, some dont
Your typical GTI with 6 cilinders 😂
Ah yes, the "extra pedal".
Mine went out last week. Just put the new one in last night. Just need to bleed the system
Just change the master and slave cylinders and a really good bleed. And hope it's not the line.
Of course it does that golf problem 😂😂 (my golf had that problem 3 times)
Could also be that notorious white clip on the pedal the secures the rod. done a few of them 😔
My tire machine has an extra pedal
Mines started doing this but when I do a long run in the car it goes away
I had that clutch problem on my Honda. I had to replace the entire system. The master and the slave both went out, and then it gave me hell priming the system as well.
oh I bet priming was tough!!!
I have 310,000 miles on a 06 Accord, STILL ORIGINAL clutch!
I wish mine were all original. Sadly the previous owner was some dumb kid that didnt know how to drive. But i replaced engine and trans. Came with sub frame and all for 800. Only 2k more than my original engine and trans. Sadly i stalled it at 3200rpm because of a dead stop on a freeway. Blew the headgasket. I know how to do that and i have a freshly machined head to put on it
Pressure bleeding makes a world of difference
lol extra pedal
Please I need some advice for a bearing release replacement 😢😢
In the States is the GTI a FWD 1.8T or 24V 2.8 VR6? In Europe the GTI is a 1.8T and we also got a 24V 2.8 VR6 4 Motion.
3.2 or not?
Do you have a clutch bleeding video out for the 02m..?
'There Extra Pedal'
"The extra pedal" must be the most American thing I've heard all day!
How is that american?
@@OsiDio
How is it not?! 😂
U fixed the input shaft but dint replace the clutch chats crazy. Why wouldn't you have a new cluch when the transmission was out to fix the imput shaft bearing.
Well since the transmission wasn’t out not sure what to tell ya 🤷♂️
Well unless u fixed the input shapt bearing on the drive shaft side how do u fix shim a pilot bearing without taking out the transmission
It’s on the back side of the transmission. Pop the cover off and fix it
my problem when i had that was my master cylinder for clutch
Common fault here is a weld breaking on the pedal. Push rod goes right through pedal
Keep digging my guy, eventually the hole will be big enuff to bury that Uboat anchor
Okay 👍
Why would you not replace the release bearing when repairing the transmission? That's a lot of extra labour for a relatively inexpensive part.
Because the repair wasn’t a transmission out job. The release bearing is.
Isn’t the brake fluid going to remove paint and expose the metal atmospheric agents?
on a 2002 f150 this thing put the slave cylinder inside the transmission bell House
I wish I didn’t live in a neighborhood
If I had the space to park several cars, I’d own a cheap manual and put all sorts of after market parts in it.
Yo how much to do timing on that VR?
theres no return spring on the pedal ?
When the petal is stuck tot the floor it’s the clutch cable I had that just happen
It can be. It’s not on this car but it can be
how much does something like this cost? ballpark?
