"...for me the modern classics are where it is driving in it's purest form." Well stated. From someone who daily drives an e36 325is winter package & weekends an e46 M3, I 100% agree. The modern classics (especially BMW) just have a beautiful balance of computer gadgetry that doesn't take away from the driving experience & analog components that just make the experience so raw and visceral, yet composed. I like the modern Bimmers, but there is just something so special about this era in their history. & What a gorgeous car.
1 more thing... thanks for not having the music soundtrack over powering the music soundtrack of the M5! people need to watch this video and learn. the background music can set off a video, but the action of the engine music is wayyyy more BEAUTIFUL. good job.
Great work! I'm a fan of the car profiles you do, and am always extremely impressed with the production quality of them, from the audio to the video. In your description, do you mean W124 E500? That would also be an great video!
Wonderful looking car. Keeping it totally drive-able while extreme, and the owner keeping it that way make it a true legend. I'd love to try one someday!
Still one of the best BMWs around. Couple thing like the VANOS failing and plastic cooling pipes cracking kind of bother me with BMWs but once those issues are sorted these are beastly cars. It's amazing just how comfortable they are in daily driving yet they'll take a corner with ease.
Have an E39 M5 as well, even jet black. I couldn't agree with you more on the modern classics comment. Cars of this time period are really the purist of driving experience while still offering great amenities for a daily driver.
Anyone else just get so excited when they saw the title of this video on their recommend page. I could go on and on about how awesome this car is...the e39 M5 in general. e39 M5 =The Ultimate Drivers Machine, Unfort, as of late, BMW is loosing their way a little
depreciation - all cars have that. Unreliability - seriuosly??? It's not a family car/wagon, but still you'll find place even for them and back in trunk space for your luggage. Interrior plastics - all car brands going same way, and it's because of the price reason. Every manufacturer can make car with good material, but do you imagine how much would it cost?
I like, and thus I'm subbin'. :) Excellent post, LOVE absolutely LOVE the new classics like the E39 (I also dig the e36 and have a soft spot for it since I used to own one a 328i). Good stuff, keep it up. -HP
Stay tuned Josh. We have a good mix of cars--including old-school Detroit muscle--coming up. The four of us who make up EF like to cover the human angle of car/moto enthusiasm, but we also like to explain why a particular car is significant. Our upcoming muscle cars are of the more "under-appreciated" variety.
One of us produces the music. He also edits and directs some of our episodes--hence the delay in us offering full-length versions of the tracks. He's currently doing a lengthy shoot abroad.
I agree...you can't compare this car to anything. This was in my opinion the most beautiful BMW ever produced, and one of the most beautiful cars ever produced. I would take this used over a brand new car if someone gave me a choice.
analanalyst c'mon man. I don't wanna start one of those internet disputes... but just agree that they're different. Not better. Twin Turbo eliminates most lag and isn't driven from a belt from the engine that saps power...
@ElectricFederal why don't you post music credits for your videos? You have such a good music in your videos, but there's no way to find the artist. Such a disappointment. And what about music in the outro, wtf is that???
ugh i wish i had a really good job so i could buy my dream car. every day i see m3's and m5's in the e36 gen on craigs and im so tempted but i know ill just be draining my wallet :(
Dinan is over priced garbage. BMW and the word bullet proof do not go together. BMW makes the shittiest V8s out there. Leak oil and coolant like its colander. Control arm ball joints go bad after 20,000 miles, bushings in even less. Power steering hoses leak. Valve cover gaskets are junk quality. That S62 for example constantly had VANOS issues, as all BMWs did from 98-08. S62s had issues with their oil pumps. S54s had issues with the cam gear bolts loosening, vanos, and crank bearings failing. Again, M3, still suffered the control arm, power steering, and other failures/leaks/misc. How fun, can't even drive the damn car cause its broken 24/7.
my 2001 540i sportwagon (with over 250,000km) has been 100% reliable up until this spring (new transmission + cooling system, like 12k all in) im the 3rd owner the car was flawless for the 1st owner, and mostly for the second owner (he had some small things go wrong here and there} and besides the tranny + cooling system going bust, it's been A+ and ill keep putting 12k into it every ~250,000km because it's such a good car if bmw v8's are shit then how did the one in my car do 250,000k, mostly at higher speeds, without breaking? PS my dad has a 2001 buick intrigue with 90,000km, and that car, with 1/2 the hp and torque is having tranny problems even though its 2 owners were both over 60 years of age............
i fully expect some hate on my comment to follow: why do i think its an SIN ghastly SIN to modify M cars SPECIALLY visual modifications, i absolute love M cars (not so much the current ones) but every time i see a M3 or M5 with idk some random rims or body kit or some other b.s .. totally ruins for me, major turn off...
possible one of the best looking cars EVER. just ... wow...
my bro's e39 dinan m5 is definitely not broken, nor ever was...the exhaust sound is like butter. unreal. looks sexy too!

my word :)
1 more thing... thanks for not having the music soundtrack over powering the music soundtrack of the M5! people need to watch this video and learn. the background music can set off a video, but the action of the engine music is wayyyy more BEAUTIFUL. good job.
Art with no easel fellas. Good work.
damn that is such a clean and perfect 5 series. I want this bad. never heard of dinan before but they sure have my attention now
excellent video paying homage to one of our favorite BMW's on the road
Definitely a great car to own. Nice and simple with lots of power. Beautiful car all around.
Love my M5 E39
One of the nicest cars I've seen on a video.
Great work! I'm a fan of the car profiles you do, and am always extremely impressed with the production quality of them, from the audio to the video. In your description, do you mean W124 E500? That would also be an great video!

The dinan kit look awesome wow
Have an E39 M5 as well, even jet black. I couldn't agree with you more on the modern classics comment. Cars of this time period are really the purist of driving experience while still offering great amenities for a daily driver.
We've uploaded our latest short, "Subtle Excess," a profile on Dinan's 620 HP E39 M5 from the early 2000s.
any updates on this - how's the car doing?
How am I just now finding your channel??? Amazing videos!!
One would never know from the outside. Love it.
I have always had a SINFUL and LUSTFUL desire to own a M series car... I'm going 2 hell
Anyone else just get so excited when they saw the title of this video on their recommend page. I could go on and on about how awesome this car is...the e39 M5 in general.
e39 M5 =The Ultimate Drivers Machine, Unfort, as of late, BMW is loosing their way a little
What you mean by "loosing their way"? At which point?
someone bought a new bmw!!!!!! :D
how is the depreciation + unreliability + interior plastics?
depreciation - all cars have that.
Lose is you loose is your mum
Best darn m5 model year hands down
Perfectly executed video.
I want that car and I want that song. Please deliver one or the other.
yeeaaa, the song is awesome, like the car
he looks like mr chow from the hang over lol
more like Shakin' Stevens
Thought tht was jet li at first then closer look seems more like jackie chan. Black hair slanty eyes looks so similar
This thing is absolutely gorgous.
E39/E46/E38 and Etc. is the last driver's cars. Anything newer than that...
are still timeless.
You forgot e34 which is better than all 3
a mighty fine car indeed. in so many ways.
Taste. That is the only word that can fully describe this car.
I like, and thus I'm subbin'. :)
Excellent post, LOVE absolutely LOVE the new classics like the E39 (I also dig the e36 and have a soft spot for it since I used to own one a 328i).
Good stuff, keep it up.

Nice car :)
Whats the name of the song ?
Great video
Cool video i think next you's need to do a shed built muscle car, one guy and one classic!
Stay tuned Josh. We have a good mix of cars--including old-school Detroit muscle--coming up. So nice! I wish mine was an m5

Beautiful car I have E39 they are the ultimate driving machine.)

Only manual baby!
The song is like, EDM or something like it?
One of us produces the music. He also edits and directs some of our episodes--hence the delay in us offering full-length versions of the tracks. He's currently doing a lengthy shoot abroad.

They only made 30 of these? Damn my neighbor like 10 houses down has a dinan m5 ..I'm hoping to save up to get a e39 m5 eventually
you can take an M5 to a Dinan shop and purchase this kit.
Hope you asked him for a test drive on his to see if you feelin it👍
I like this.
In 2014, does anyone recommend me getting an E39 M5 over say a 2008 Dodge Charger SRT8 or an E46 M3 as my daily driver ?
Lanre Oladejo Dude the m5 e39 is just a legend, you cant compare it to other cars
I agree...you can't compare this car to anything. This was in my opinion the most beautiful BMW ever produced, and one of the most beautiful cars ever produced. I would take this used over a brand new car if someone gave me a choice.
Popopicos Viktor Freesmeier. But I mean for daily driving
i have a srt8 300c there not to be reckoned with mate i plan on getting a e39 m5
i want a to convert a e39 wagon into a m5 and then after 3 years or so ill want this turbo set up
turbo? its a supercharger. superchargers are better then turbos
analanalyst
Different* not better.
easyadventurer low End torque is important
analanalyst c'mon man. I don't wanna start one of those internet disputes... but just agree that they're different. Not better.
Twin Turbo eliminates most lag and isn't driven from a belt from the engine that saps power...
twin turbo is really good
Nice car
This video made me buy this car. I hate you electric federal. ;-)
what is MB W124 E550 ? ;)
Music?
Reminder: All of our latest content airs on /Drive and /Drive+!
ElectricFederal where can I find the music featured in this video? It is my favorite music and I watch this video a lot because of the music mainly.
@ElectricFederal why don't you post music credits for your videos? You have such a good music in your videos, but there's no way to find the artist. Such a disappointment. And what about music in the outro, wtf is that???
Song/songs name please
I don't like BMW but this one is beautiful
Wtf was I even saying, dumb kid
I would say this series is comparable if not better than petrolicious
so many WORDS. bmw is just a nice looking lada.
Hahahahahahhahahaahhahaa
are you fucking stupid? leave lol
analanalyst is it hurt? Fucking bmw fan boy
lmfao learn something about cars and then come back here
analanalyst you are gay fan boy
e39 bmw is by far the best looking one ever made... the new ones look good but its not as smooth as this car.
+Sebastian Rogers so true
that guy looks a bit like Shakin' Stevens
4 years later....still don’t know the song
Who are these people who have a modded 993 Turbo and a Dinan E39 M5? o_0
جميل
so much want
ugh i wish i had a really good job so i could buy my dream car. every day i see m3's and m5's in the e36 gen on craigs and im so tempted but i know ill just be draining my wallet :(
im 18 and i drive a 2001 525i its in mint condition looks brand new. i have a full time job i find it not hard at all to maintain my car!
There's always engine swaps... cheaper than a rebuild. Dive in :)
Zack Roy
You are comparing a M54 3.0 straight 6 that is almost standard in every bmw to a 4.9 s62 v8 which is stupidly expensive to upkeep
Soarerfox 2001 525i = 2,494cc (152 cub inch) m54, no?
Henry Perez
still an M54 his is a M54B25 instead of the M54B30
Сколько. Стоит. Такой. Бумер
boss!
They have more than 5 years they stop making performance parts for e39 m5
how in the fuck do you stiffen up a clutch, jeez man
Triple plate clutch
I immediately lost interest when he said it has a supercharger.
No such thing as a W124 E550.... It was 500E. Get it right, E550 is the newer models.
maybe he haves an 5.4 swap?
No.
the wheels ruin it for me
M cars don't need any upgrades !
BMW Alpina any car could use upgrades, although you are right that m cars dont NEED them, but there better with them ;)
Don't new any upgrades? Then why is your name bmw alpina ..alpina is a company that upgrades bmws!! Dumbass lol
He is talking about m cars not normal series, alpina doesn't do m cars
yeah I would just use the regular M5 wheels they are perfect

Based on personal experience dinar is overpriced, repurposed bolt on parts...Love the e39
i fully expect some hate on my comment to follow:

Your opinion man
Never mess with the E39 M5 leave it the way BMW intended. No Dinan no nothing. Leave it. You just wasted money ruining it pal
Song please?
