I really enjoyed this, and thought the staging was clever. I liked the choice of material. All these singers are artists. Some of them are better than others, and some will need to improve their acting; but I wish them all great luck. Competitions like this remind you of all the wonderful music and stories out there, and how much difference the performers and directors make, in their effect.

I grew up in my father's butcher shop listening to Opera at full volume while butchering meat. This was the 1970's, 80's in Chicago. For me it remains such a dramatic and wonderful form of fine art. Does anyone know the origin of this kind of singing?

Considering Paris Opera is an international house, this level of talent was very surprising.

the level of the contestants is even worse than at the Tchaikovsky competition, even strange. Head crushed not put on the breath. very few sing more or less freely.

I agree with the winners; but I would give George Virban, William Desbiens, Denis Uzun, Maria Brea strong applauds for certain parts they did.

So many of these voices are produced with such effort and rigidity they can’t even sonically emote or play with tonal colours. Are any of these people actually enjoying themselves? Where is the artistry? A classical instrumentalist performing with such mechanical stiffness would never get past the preliminary competition rounds. If this is an example of what will attract audiences to come and experience opera live there really is little hope for its survival. Ultimately this shows gross disrespect for the composers whose genius creations are presented as ‘tasks’, well & truly executed.

The lady who sang the Bell Song, to me, lacked the “silky” aspect of the voice.

I agree. She has that Dessay sound: a bit dry and almost may be a sign of inappropriate technique.

The orchestra was totally out of step in Avant de quitter ces lieux. Painful to listen to this great aria.

It is very sad to hear badly developed technique and sound that is sharp, muffled, nasal or too spread in order to achieve fake results as fast as possible. If you are passionate about opera or you are a singer yourself, please learn about singers like Montserrat Caballé, Maria Callas, Shirley Verret, Birgit Nilsson, Mario del Monaco etc. Trust your ears the most, not only your teachers. Most of it is individual work. Try to find a difference between natural and free singing and one that is constricted and uneven. If more people knew the difference we would have more great singers. There are great books on singing like the one by Lili Lehmann or the one written by Caruso or Tetrazzini. I hope that more and more people will learn about what made the opera great. Let's not let opera die!

Anyone else think the tenor sounds a lot like Jerry Hadley?
