  • From a Dharma discourse given by Lama Zopa Rinpoche at Maitreya Instituut Amsterdam in November, 1998. In this third excerpt Rinpoche discusses how we need to use our wisdom to examine our yearning for feelings of pleasure so we can realize how chasing after samsaric pleasures always leads down a dead end filled with suffering.

The topic is truly valuable, but it's SO hard to make out what Rinpoche is saying. In any case, thank you for uploading :)

The aggregates rebirth the causes for suffering continously. Without meditation your mind is completely unprotected. Without meditation your mind is pervaded by the suffering from samsara. To bring in the liberation of samsara for all sentient beings it is important to practice concentration and emptiness. Wisdom and realization is the only means to end suffering and by wisdom and realization suffering ends instantly.

The practice of morality, the darma practice for the wellbeing of each sentient being is not suffering. Freeing yourself from samsaric causes, from attaching and detaching the mind to bodily pleasure becoming pain, is not suffering. Freeing yourself from the continuation of suffering contained in the aggregates is a non suffering practice.

Darma practice is one practice. Once practiced it is done.
Samsaric pleasure is impure pleasure. Without meditation, without darma practice, the hallucinating mind mistakes suffering for pleasure.
The illusionary mind labels all not suffering as pleasure. Immediate not suffering is labeled as unbelievable bliss. The decrease of immediacy is labled by the ignorant mind as decreaseing not suffering and likewise decreasing pleasure. The decrease of immediacy reaches far into suffering until the mind glimpses a spark of truth and lables suffering by its proper name.

The mistake of labeling samsaric suffering as pleasure is taken up by the aggregates and continued through many lifetimes until knowledge is acquired and maintained by meditation. With wisdom the attachment finds instant cessation and the mind is empowered into bliss.
