    As someone who started at age 17 I can say these kinds of videos are really helpful, kept me motivated at the time to see other people on youtube and their progression, to know it is normal for violin to take such a long time to learn. Keep it up Marijke!!

    I stumbled onto you videos back when you started playing. Proud of you for being consistent and dedicated AND for taking the extra time to post your VLOGs.
    I started playing 14 months ago and have practiced daily for at least 1 hour (missed only about 10 days due to business travel).
    For comparison for others to see:
    I have reach a level of comfort playing in 1st position. Playing songs in the keys F Major, Bb Major, and Eb Major are excellent practice.
    In the last month I have been working on double stops, shifting to 3rd position and vibrato. I must say, my efforts with vibrato are conflicted. I know it takes time.
    Encouragement to other adults...
    I was 63 when I first picked up a violin. I am now playing and enjoying it immensely. Such a wonderful instrument. It is never too late to start.
    Thank you for your encouraging videos.

      I wonder if you still play and how it has worked out. I will be soon at the 3 years mark (in 2 months) and not as fat as you, but I practice more like average of half hour only, and I think my progress at this time is definitely limited by practice time. Surprisingly my intonation still sucks, admittedly not as bad as it used to be. Third position is really bad, if I practice a piece with a shift I can practice it enough so the shift is somewhat consistent and not atrocious but just randomly shifting it's very random, sometimes being off by a half note or something huge like that. Double stops are also very challenging, I just started to consistently practice them but bow angle is hard, also intonation is very hard, many of the intervals just don't sound good and I really need to spend time to find the right position for both fingers, so it's something I can not do at all well during actual playing.
      Anyway curious if you still play and if you get the notification let us know :) I'm 45 so I hope I have a few decades to play. :)

    You are such an inspiration! I love to see your excitement and motivation. I used to learn violin as a child for 8 years but I haven't played it for over 4 years now. I lost the joy of playing because I didn't get along with my teacher. Your videos really motivate me to pick up my violin again and start playing. Keep going, you are awesome!

      That is very kind, thank you! Yes, the teacher makes a huge difference! I really like mine, he knows what suits me and we have good laughs. You have a good base in playing already, why don't you start practicing a song you really like? That sure must be very motivating. ☺

    Mariijke, young lady, you are a breath of fresh air. I use to play violin a looooooong time ago and I just started getting back to playing to while a way my retirement. I don't worry, like so many, about am I too old. I'm doing this for me and if I get to the point of sounding good enough that others enjoy the music, I'll be the happiest man on earth. Thank you for the video and take care.

    Great info! I think your teacher had the right idea: you don't want to start third position before you can play first position effortlessly, but I also think most violin methods actually wait too long to start on third position. So I think it's a good idea to start on third position as soon as you're completely comfortable with first position, as your teacher suggested.
    Also, a note to beginning violin students watching this video: ALWAYS devote at least some of your practice time to focusing on basic technique. It doesn't have to be exercises in the violin method books, but you should play something that emphasizes a specific aspect of your technique, and focus on that technique rather than just playing the notes. Even professional violinists spend at least the first 20-30 minutes of their practice time every day working on basic technique, so that it becomes effortless when they play more difficult music later.

    • @MarijkeViolin
      @MarijkeViolin  7 лет назад +1

      Great advice! I do some basic stuff as a warm-up. I'll make a practice routine video one day, I think that could be useful.

I would say just keep practicing a lot, I still regret that I didn't practice as much as I should have when I was between 12-15 years old because I could've been way better than I am now. Anyway, you're doing great!

    I admire you, because you are willing to do things that common people think nobody can when we are adults. I don't know, but I realize all the violinist women who I've seen in my life are really gorgeous, and you are not the exception. Anyway, I'd like you give me other advices about playing better the violin. Let me tell you my story. I've been learning how to play the violin for my own since October 2015. Well, a friend tought me a little the first four months. I'm able to play some melodies, but I don't feel I improved a lot in all this time. There are a lot of people in youtube that say they've learned how to play violin by their own. I don't think so. It's really necessary a teacher, isn't it?. What do you think about it?. Keep on doing like you do!. See you!

    • @MarijkeViolin
      @MarijkeViolin  7 лет назад +1

      You are very kind, thank you! I don't consider myself gorgeous at all, just nice, and I'm quite handy with doing my make-up. 😌
      Great you are playing as well! If you feel you are making little progress and can only play some melodies, I suggest you to buy a lesson book and to practice a violin concert, suitable to your skill level. A teacher is best, in my opinion unmissable if you want to play really well. But without one, you need all help you can get.
      When I'm done with my 2nd lesson book, I'm going to use Wohlfart's book with 60 etudes to practice my technique. I don't know how far you are, but why not try one of the concerts I mention in this video? ☺

    • @andrewhcit
      @andrewhcit 7 лет назад +2

      It's not impossible to learn to play on your own. I did. But improvement may be much slower without a teacher, and sometimes you miss big technical problems that a teacher would spot immediately. Here's a cautionary tale. I self-taught starting at 16 and even got into a professional orchestra eventually (at 28), but I when I finally took some lessons last year (aged 33), I had to spend a whole summer fixing some serious problems with my bowing technique that I simply hadn't noticed because it seemed like I could play everything just fine. My technical problems didn't ruin my tone quality or agility, but caused back and shoulder pain, which limited the length of time I could play. That's why I would still recommend taking lessons no matter how good you sound on your own. Proper technique is also important for preventing injuries!

    • @MarijkeViolin
      @MarijkeViolin  7 лет назад +2

      That is so true! Playing well is also playing comfortable. And yes, a teacher spots mistakes inmediately. During a two week holiday without lessons, I had developped something wrong already, took a month to re-learn it the good way. Must be a pain to fix a long-term wrong technique, but great you did it anyway!

      Hi! A cheap violin is fine when you're just starting out. The strings on cheap violins are almost always steel strings that sound awful, so I suggest buying a set of strings too (Pirastro Tonica, Pirastro Violino and Corelli Crystal are very nice student strings that are quite cheap). And if you practice well, sure you can play simple orchestra parts in a few months. 🙂 Make sure to get a lesson book and work it through so you learn to read sheet music. Good luck!

    It's my third month on the cello. Been stuck with a piece that required shifting to 7th position. Very big jump from just having learned 1st position and some 3rd. My teacher thinks I'm crazy.

      Hi, the open string exercises came from my lesson book. I highly suggest you get a beginners method book, they should start with open string exercises.

    Hi there! I watched all of your videos today! And I really enjoyed your progress :) Tell me please, I'm 25 years old and I do not have music education but I have a dream to play the violin! It's real? I found a lot of information about the fact that in adulthood it gives very hard. Did you have a basic knowledge of Selfeggio before you started learning to play the violin? And to help me to master the Selfegeo can only the teacher? Is it really possible to study this independently? :( From the side it seems to me that the instrument is given to you is not difficult. Thank you in advance for your reply! ;)

      Hi, I'm happy you like my videos! Ofcourse you can learn it and you can still get very good at it.
      I already knew how to read sheet music before I started and had a little flute and piano experience. But even without experience you can learn it. My best advice is to get a teacher. You can learn the basics without a teacher, but it's near impossible to get really good without one. I hope this helps. 🙂

      Hi, I have a Samsung NX3000 camera. I also talk about it in my Q&A video about my equipment. But I've heard this camera is no longer available.

      Good one! I notice I'm really focussing on that now in my second year. I'll mention it in my 'what to learn in your second year' video.

      Everyone was a beginner at some point, ofcourse you can learn it too. ☺ Get a teacher if you can. If not, buy a lesson book, watch violin tutorials and practice concertos once you can play in basic first position. I hope this video gave you a clear idea of what to learn in the first year. 🙂 Good luck!

    Yeah imma pass that... Can't even begin to imagine the boredom. I can't see how that would be helpful

      Starting to play with fingers on the fretboard straight away would be like learning to juggle and start with 3 balls instead of 1. It may sound boring, but bowing the strings in the right angles is the first thing to learn. I got the hang of it after a few days, but my teacher made me do some more open string exercises to practice bowing well without having to think about the left hand. If the bowing goes well, you can start with the left hand.

    This is embarrassing I'm 11 years old been playing for over a year and I'm probably not nearly to this girl's level but to be fair she's an adult and I am a child 😂 you also move a lot slower in school orchestra that you then you would just with a teacher at your own pace, I did lessons all throughout the summer to advance my skills and I'm way ahead the most kids my age doing orchestra currently I'm enjoying it so much in this video was very encouraging thank you!

      I didn't look around for my teacher. There is one music school in my town and he is the only violin teacher there. Easy as that. 😂 And luckily, we get along really well.

    I dont follow this. Im 22 years old now, started violin 2 months ago, self taught. I can do vibrato now and can do the two positions. The literal best advice in learning in violin is: ALWAYS PLAY WHAT YOU WANT TO PLAY no matter how hard, no matter if its out of your skill level and youll learn more quickly.
