Kilimanjaro - an Honest Guide Up the Mountain - Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Lemosho Route

- Our unfiltered experience climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain. Lemosho Route.
Mount Kilimanjaro, Arusha/Moshi, Tanzania, Africa.
About 2.5 hours out of Arusha, Tanzania, is the start of the Lemosho Route - Londorossi Gate.
A dream come true for us climbing Africa's highest mountain and the tallest free standing mountain in the world at 5,895M a.m.s.l.
We took the Lemosho Route over 8 days, for the superior scenery and ability to acclimatise to the altitude a little easier. It rained almost every day, but it was worth every single wet sock, soaked pair of underwear, drenched pants and souls! This is by far our proudest moment on any trek so far and we are so excited to be able to share our journey up the mountain with you.
Quick Trail Facts-
Total Distance - 64.9km (approx)
Time - 8 days / 7 nights
Start - Londorossi Gate
Finish - Mweka gate
Highest Altitude - 5,895M a.m.s.l
We went with ClimbingKilimanjaro.com and could not have been happier. Their guides are incredibly experienced and profoundly hard working, doing absolutely everything in their power to make your climb the best experience possible. Our head guides Fred (Who has climbed Kili over 1,000 times!) and Bareki were so knowledgeable and understanding of not only the mountain, but also our needs whilst climbing, which made this dream of ours even better!
A truly life changing experience I hope everyone gets the opportunity to summit this beautiful mountain.
There is a bunch of technical questions that we had before we left so as always, please throw any questions you have in the comments and we will be more than happy to share any and all knowledge we have!
Next we're off to witness some of the most beautiful animals Africa has to offer and immerse ourselves in East African wilderness!

Thank you very much for the support Jo! We're incredibly happy to read such a beautiful comment! Thank you for watching!
This is the BEST and most accurate vlog on the Lemosho Route. I summited on October 7, 2023 and watched a bunch of videos before I left. This is by far the closest to what it is like being there. Thanks for posting!
Wowza, thanks so much for these kind words! Super appreciated! 😃
Also, huge congrats on the successful summit! It's an incredible experience isn't it!? 🎉😄
Fantastic video and great narration. Love how you told the story. Congratulations! Wish me luck...I'm going in about a month (10/2024).
Probably the best Kili RUclips I’ve seen! As a future climber of this beast I’ve viewed over 50 on RUclips. We look forward to our attempt sometime in 2022 and thank you for the realist’s perspective of this great adventure.
Wow thank you so much for such an incredible comment, that's very high praise! We tried to be as honest as possible with out too much fake 'hype' in the hope to serve as a guide rather than 'inspo' hahahaha. Really excited for your climb! All the best with it! Thank you David! Very happy to hear it brought you back to the mountain, it's an incredible experience isn't it! Well done on your summit too!
Great video. I am in the middle of planning my second summit about a year from now. This is bringing back a lot of memories of when I did Lemosho in 2019.

Hi guys, just watching your vid after summitting last week myself doing the Lemosho route. Loved that you smiled all the way even with a dodgy belly and some crazy weather early on and on summit night. Well done for giving credit to the porters and guides. Great and honest vid- good luck for the future
Thanks so much Eddie and a huge congratulations on your summit! What a beautiful part of the world, so happy to hear you made it! 😃🎉

In 2010 on this route I got to 18,000ft/5,500m before developing HAPE so had to turn back. At least I survived to tell the tale 💪
It certainly seems like a roll of the dice as you get higher! No telling how it all will affect the individual. Great job on getting as far as you did - so close to summit!

Great Video - really inspiring! What month in the year did you climb it?
Hey! Thank you so much! We went in September, which I think is quite a good month to go most of the time, although clearly we received a lot of rain during our climb! 😅
Yeh, I thought you went in the rainy season due to all the rain.
Loved it! what month did you guys go? was it during a wet season?
Hi Hamzah, thanks so much for watching! We went in October and it's not during the wet season, although might be on a shoulder of it I think! Clearly we got drowned either way! 😅😄
Hi question about your gear, like rain shoes, and what shoes you were to climb, what about your jackets did you rented them, what all things you can rent from there. please loved your video , i was nervous but feel better after watching you guys
Hi Shradha, thanks so much for watching!
We actually used the same boots for the entire climb, which are the Salomon Quest gtx4. They're waterproof and fantastic in almost all conditions.
Our jackets are from a company called Kathmandu and are 750 loft. It's really about the layers you're wearing on summit night, you will want a thermal base layer, a polar fleece layer and then a good quality down jacket on top.
Depending on what climbing company you book with, you can rent just about everything, for us we rented out poles, tent, sleeping bags and mattresses. Basically everything we didn't want to fly to Africa with!
Good luck on your climb, we wish you all the best!
Great video. What time of year did you go? I leave in 3 days!
I believe we went up in September! Good luck on your summit and thanks so much for watching! :)
🤩✌ wow!!!
Thanks so much for watching! ❤️⛰️
Such beautiful editing, made me feel like I was right there with you guys! How many days did it take to hike back down the mountain?
Thanks so much for watching!
After a good sleep post summit, it only takes a day and a half to get back down! It's incredibly fast and with the oxygen levels becoming denser as you descend, you feel better and more energetic with every step!
I was blown away by the video. Incredibly inspiring! My question is how much weight did you carry on your back? I'm hoping to go in 2022 touch wood
Thanks so much for such positive feedback! We really appreciate it!!
Great question, I can't remember exactly, but I would say somewhere between 7-9kg. We were carrying a bunch of camera gear which obviously added a few kgs, so if you're not planning on making a film you could get that down. Main weight comes from water, spare clothes for the day and snacks. Your team of porters will carry everything else.
So excited for your climb!
Thank you for the educational video. May I ask what month was your climb, given it rained so much? Was it in the rainy season?
Hey thanks so much for watching! We summited in September, I'm not actually too sure which months are the rainiest, but we wanted to schedule our summit with the full moon and this worked out the best for our schedule. :)
Hey Simon and Bec, Congratulations what a wonderful journey to climb up Kilimanjaro. I enjoyed your video. You said it was -25 degrees at the summit. That was so cold! Was the dude with one leg managed to be on the summit? He is super cool. I am planning to go there next year in March. Did you go during June 2020? How did you go with the Covid restriction? In your experience what is the most difficult part of the climb? Would you mind sharing the total cost you spent? Again, congratulations 🎉 guys what an experience.
Hey Jeffry, thanks so much for watching and the kind words!
We climbed in Sept/Oct but back in 2019, a few months before COVID hit. (Luckily)
The one legged man did make it! Incredible story and there's a documentary about it too. Check out his Instagram instagram.com/neeraj_george?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
I think we spent maybe $8,000AUD each, including flights and accom. That also included a Safari in Kenya.
By far the hardest section is the summit night. All other sections are very easy, but summit night you're fighting jet lag, lack of sleep and general tiredness from the previous 6 days of trekking.
Good luck with your climb, it's an incredible experience and very well worth the effort, money and time!
@@vaastexpeditions908 thanks for this additional information guys. I really appreciated it. Would you mind sharing the guide operator details? Many thanks for taking the time to write back to me. Cheers!
We climbed with a company called ClimbingKilimanjaro.com but I have a feeling maybe the pandemic took them out. Their parent company Hidden Valley Safaris is still going strong. They were excellent and our Guide Fred is the best there is!
Do you trek back on the same day as summiting? And how is it possible the trek back only takes 1 day? Are there special exit routes that descend quicker? Thanks.
Hey Tom, thanks so much for watching!
You reach the summit at sunrise after a night time ascent, then come back down to base camp for a rest and nap. That same day you begin your descent and cover ground very quickly, camping only one more night on the mountain.
The reason is altitude acclimation, you need to ascend very slowly to allow your body to get used to the lower levels of oxygen in the atmosphere. However as you come down the oxygen becomes denser and you feel incredible, therefore can come down very fast. If you were already acclimatised to altitude you could probably summit in 2 days, the local porter's reach base camp at lighting speeds! Very cool!
I hope that helps! :)
What time of year was this climb? Well done video. Great job!
Hey Scott, thanks so much for the nice feedback!
We did this climb in September. Are you planning on heading up?
Hi nice vid. I'm planning to do Kilimanjaro once COVID settles. Just wanted to know which tour group you guys went with ?
Hey thanks so much for watching! We went with ClimbingKilimanjaro.com through a company called Hidden Valley Safaris. Although I think COVID has hit the climbing company quite hard, the Hidden Valley Website is still active. They were absolutely incredible! If you can, ask for Fred and Bareki they were the most experienced guides, everyone on the mountain seemed to know them!
You said you went in September, were you just unlucky with the rain? It's supposed to be dry season, no?
Yeah I think it can be wet like this at any time of year, from what we were hearing from the guides! I do think this was unusually wet though! Hahaha
@@vaastexpeditions908 ok thanks fkr the reply! I'm doing it in September so im a little anxious haha
Hi did you get to see the 🧊 cap in this route? Or do you have to go through umbew route to see it? Thank you
Great question! Because we summited in the dark I'm finding it difficult to give a useful answer here. I know we definitely saw it, but not like some photos I've seen of the view that is possible from what I assume is alternative routes.
It might be best to contact a few of the guide companies and double check! :)
I'm always looking at people's gear. What is the brand/style of the pink/salmon colored jacket you were wearing? Were you happy with it?
Hey Michael, aren't we all! :)
Are you taking about the red jackets we were wearing on summit? They are the Kathmandu XT Pinnacle down jacket. They were absolutely incredible! Layered clothing on summit night; thermal base, fleece mid layer and the XT Pinnacle jacket as the outer, I wasn't cold once at -25° windy as heck on the top of Kili.
Excellent jackets!
It rained almost everyday on your trip. Was this early November? Wish I could go right now.
We went in October! Mountain weather is super unpredictable, I think September may be a little drier though. Still absolutely worth it though, even if it pours every day!
Thanks so much for watching!
Excellent vlog..thanks! What month did you guys go in?
Hey thanks so much!
We climbed in September, which clearly turned out to be quite a rainy month! Are you heading over soon?
@@vaastexpeditions908 supposed to go this Sept as well but some last min hitches with bookings. What company did you use and would you hv recommendations for yr top 3?
@@shilpakashyap438 oh excellent!
They all seem to be very good. We went with a company called Climbing Kilimanjaro.com, but they seem to have become a victim of Covid taking tourism away. They were incredible and our head guide Fred was well known by all on the mountain. The parent company Hidden Valley Safaris are still offering climbing packages and you may be able to request Fred as your guide! :)
Over all just look for how many successful summits they've had (as a percentage) and what reviews are like. We always felt incredibly safe and well looked after and that's the most important thing.
great video! How did the Kilimanjaro beer taste?
Hahahaha, like victory and accomplishment rolled into one! Thanks Paul! :)
hello
love the vids. what's the price for the whole climb excluding flights.
Hey thanks so much! I believe it was about $3,000USDpp for accommodation before and after and the climb. We went privately and added extra days for filming, but it was worth every cent!
@@vaastexpeditions908 privately as in you 2 were the only ones in your group?
