You can keep that cold stuff up there my friend. These southern bees don't have any need for that cold stuff.
Awe. . Come play in the cold. Ohio wants Yappy to visit when we have a foot of snow.
Winter is upon us!! Great prep work. And just think, in 10 weeks we’ll be back in them!! …..oh wait, you guys won’t actually be in them again…..hope you have a great ‘overwinter’ Brian!!
I'll come down in February for your cool summer. We won't really get in them again til late March into April. Thanks, Mike.
Great job Brian. Interesting video. I love the edit. You keep the video moving with clean transitions and the music adds a nice touch. Well-done my friend. Upping your game!
I appreciate that, Bruce. I've been trying to make my videos more enjoyable. Gotta follow after you. .
Indeed!
@@CastleHiveswhat mic are you using? I know you’re near a road sometimes but there is virtually no background noise
@@williamsanderford918 I use the DJI mic set. I do use FInal Cut Pro and have learned a bit of editing, so that helps cut out that background noise as well.
@@williamsanderford918I also use the DJI wireless mic. Game changer. Works with smart phone or camera.
What a warm up yesterday, hit 50 in southeast Michigan, bees were getting a cleansing flight
Crazy weather.I think we hit 51 or 52.
Great info as always Brian, thanks for sharing your vast knowledge of bees.
My pleasure Tony. Appreciate you watching.
Great video! I learn so much by watching. Can’t wait to see ya at NAHBE!
Thanks Lisa. . I can't wait for NAHBE. . It's going to Bee a blast.
Great video Brian. I put my Hive Alive fondant on about a month ago. My weights were all good and the bees didn't seem to mind the early treat!! Our temps have varied from 18 to 72 degrees this Fall so hoping for a cool down and pretty "normal" winter. Take care and see you soon at The Expo!!!
Thanks Keith. That is insane, 18 to 72, crazy temp range there. Cya at the expo. .
I got a roll of 1/8 inch thick self adhering foam weather stripping & put between the seams/ gaps on numerous hives, was fast & easy, worked great & no sticky tape residue left on exteriors of hives, & I can still pull them apart if need be & it will seal them right back up
That sound slike it would work out great. I'll have to check that stuff out. Thanks for watching.
I was mixing Hive alive in my Sugar Syrup in July. Really seemed to give the bees the boost they needed to build Stong winter bees into September. Feeling pretty good that my nutrition was on point this year! If it’s any solace, I’ve had hives looking like that this time of year. Put ap23 on them around Christmas and by March I had a box full of bees. I’d expect they could do the same thing with Hive alive.
I wrap my hives in black pallet wrap, to ensure all gaps are covered.
I invert a poly Ashforth feeder over a QE which I place my fondent on. Moving the poly Ashforth feeder so late in the season doesn't give me bees enough time to cover any gaps with propolis.
That sounds like a good plan you have there. Appreciate you watching.
Its never to late to try.
Hopefully this is the trick.
That’s what I do, keep bees and forget things 😂 Have a good one!
Always forgetting something. . It's what we do. . LOL
I use 6 frame Lyson nucs for small colones going into winter. 👍🏼 🐝
Good stuff. . If I had the time i'd get them into tighter configurations.
Bees are looking good Brian. I will see you soon :)
Yes. . I'll be there all 3 days, so we definitely have to catch up.
@@CastleHives Great. I will probably be there 2 days at least.
@@NKYHoneyBees Excellent. .
Hi Brian For the second year in a row I have used Hive Alive as my source of feeding for my 6 colonies. I started feeding them the 2LB patties in the beginning of October. All of the colonies were consuming a full patty a week through the middle of November. They have slowed down to about a full patty every 10 days to two weeks. They are 8 frame double deeps with a honey super on top. I have and 1 and a half inch poly styrene board as insulation right under the telescoping cover. The Hive Alive goes right under the insulation on top of the frames. I do not liquid feed. Lost 1 hive last year with this Wintering method. Fingers crossed this year? Located on the Jersey Shore. Hope you have success with your Wintering set up! Also hope to meet you in Louisville! 👍
I swear by Hive Alive, what a great product. It sounds like you have your winterization technique ironed out. Definitely look me up, i'll be roaming around and at the QueenRightDial booth. Appreciate you watching. Hope you have success this winter.
@oneshoo * Neet, another South Jerseyan! 😂
I'm already subscribed 😆 keep grinding 5k inbound 👍
Hey hey. . Hope all is well. Good seeing you in comments. Crazy to think i'm closing in on 5k. .
Oops didn't finish typing...great video, I like the idea of shrinking the hive size, one thing I have noticed is a abundance of pollen is usually stored in the bottom deep in a double, always concerns me to remove that box
My tops usually have a little bit as well, so not that worried. We end up with such a small brood pattern in the winters here, that they do not need much. Now come march, i'll have to watch them but I usually put on pollen patties then.
Brian
For some reason I too don’t have a good feeling about making it through winter without a lot of losses. I hope we are wrong.
I hope so also. We'll find out come April.
If the bee smart inner cover don't fit tight on the box it could be the little plastic studs on the underside of the inner cover I had to cut them off on some of my hives to get them to lay flat. The hive alive fondant I had a problem with bees getting under the package after they had eaten the fondant around the hole I cut, I think the hole was to big when I checked on them there were a lot of dead bees under the top cover so now I cut the hole about a 16th smaller than the hole in the inner cover no more problem with bees crawling under the package .
That's a great tip. I always cut a larger hole. Last season, i didn't have any die under it, so we'll see how they do this season.
Good morning Brian, mug up from central NH. I have a couple hives that are light as well. peace
Mornin. . I havent had my mug yet today.
@@CastleHivesyou better get on it...just in for another mug, have a great day!
Brian, good video. I think if you keep the fondant on them they will do good this winter. One thing about dead-outs is all the drawn comb you get for doing splits in the spring, of course we don't want to lose too many. LOL Good luck.
Comb = Gold to a Beek. Thanks for watching Russell. I have my last 2 markets this weekend, one tomorrow and one Sunday. Tomorrow it is supposed to be very busy. Over 1k people.
@@CastleHives My last two markets are Friday here in Bird Island and Saturday is in Hutchinson, a large town, where we usually do 1k worth of sales. Hope your markets are good. Last week we had two small markets and they did 3X what we thought. Not sure if it is Christmas cheer or good honey??
@russellkoopman3004 The one tomorrow is in downtown. They have a Christmas parade and tree lighting. So i expect to be busy. I'm taking over 150 jars of honey, candles, balms, and wraps.
Hi Brian great video 🐝🐝
Hey Sebastián. . Thank you.
@@CastleHives you very close to getting 5k subscription fabulous work Brian 💪👏👏
I am working for my first 1k 😉
Brian, I don't have a good feeling for a few of my weaker hives; I think it's b/c of the cold weather we just had here in PA so soon. Hopefully the cold won't be too severe and frequent.
This weather can be over and it be April already you know.
I had to take a deep off of two of my hives. Some reason they didn’t want to go up to the deep . I’m thinking it was too late in the year for them to fill it out.
I just wish the Bees would listen to us, you know. It would make Beekeeping much easier. . lol
One more closer to 5k. How do you manage your condensation with your low winter temperatures?
Thank you. . I haven't ever really had a problem. With the walls being cooler, that is where the condensation will occur, not on the cluster. With water on the sides, it gives the bees a place to gather moisture should they need it.
Why do u precer fondant over a sugar brick? I’m a novice.
Thx
Ds
The fondant has Hive Alive which has been proven to help with nosema. It also has amino acids and other extracts. Sugar bricks are good, but I've seen the bees prefer this fondant over sugar.
Sealing hives too tight will cause condensation correct?… do u promote air flow in winter?
Thx novice Dave SE Ohio
I am leaning away from upper entrances and I use the smallest opening for an entrance reducer. Think of a tree and feral colonies. They have a small opening, sometimes an inch or two, and no other entrance/exit.
Hey Brain not trying to burst your bubble but do you think that spray foam is safe to be inside the hive? I would be worried about that "great stuff" out-gassing toxic chemicals and/or the bee's getting up there and chewing on it why risk it? We are all on a learning journey i have learned a lot about beekeeping from watching your videos. I like using the Hive-Hugger it won the American Beekeeping Federation Innovation Award.🐝
Technically, it is not in the hive but above the insulated inner cover and provides added R-Value for insulation is all. The Bees do not get near it. When I built them, they sat for probably 2-3 weeks before they went on also. I do like the Hive Hugger, but the price is a bit steep for me. With 13 colonies, it would cost me over 1k to wrap all of my hive bodies.
Are you monetized yet?🤔
I've been for about 2 years.
