Having no background in political or social sciences, basically no opinion on the (let's say) strife between Russia and the west, and only a passing interest in Russia, if only for the fact that I have close Russian and Eastern European friends; this lecture was fascinating for a layman like myself. Being from India, I found it engaging to try and draw certain comparisons and parallels (very scientifically, of course) with our own social climate and the process of turning into a party or personalist autocracy, especially in education.
Loved this insight in to modern Russia; for a capitalist Western pig-dog as myself (I joke, I joke), from Amsterdam, I feel like I now have some small beginning of what the political climate and attitude actually is like inside Russia, for the common citizen. In my opinion, Ekaterina was funny, engaging, insightful, and communicated her ideas exceptionally clearly. I also think there were some very interesting questions, and I loved how nobody was pretending that there's a simple answer to any of this. I think perspectives like these are very important: for an outsider like me, this helps turn my simplistic and stereotypical idea of the average Russian in to a more nuanced, complex, and layered picture, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to learn :) I think it's more than obvious why she's spoken of so highly!

I appreciate your comment and your genuine interest in understanding Russia. This country is much more complex than "140 mln orcs supporting the war". Big cities, like Moscow, St-Pet, Ekaterinburgh, Novosibirsk are very different from the regions, yet within regions there're national republics which are totally different from the rest of Russia. Also, there're different social groups within each. So, when I hear "the average Russian people", I always want to ask - which Russian people are you talking about.

Amazingly watched the entire lecture. Interesting that the ones with the most money in Russia support the war the most. Also hopeful that there is a sharp contrast in age groups and the younger people are more open minded to Democracy. And the cliffhanger is the 180 degree change in attitudes (indifference to alarm) when mobilization started and when Putin has skipped major annual speaking events, etc..Also need to explore more now the 'reverse cargo cult' concept. Thanks for the lecture Ekaterina and Sciences Po for providing the platform. There would be no other way for me to hear opinions like this except for this medium
I really enjoy listening to Ms Schulmann and admire her stubborn optimism. I wish that she would speak in English more often. She brings a richness and depth of context and understanding when she does speak to the rest of us who live outside Russia. I have to say, though, that while it might be normal for people to not have opinions on political policy in Russia, it isn't normal for those of us who live in democratic countries. Indeed, our great tendency to be politically opinionated can sometimes be a problem for us. The US is the best case in point for that right now since it is perpetually mired in partisan disagreement so serious that it can even affect relationships, families, workplaces, the good function of the government and the general peace of society as a whole. The UK was recently another striking case-in-point with the self-inflicted societal, economic and political wound that was Brexit. Sometimes our opinions are thoughtful, careful and well-informed, and sometimes they are just not any of those things. But almost all of us who live in Western democracies feel like it's very important to have an opinion on political policy. So it can't be true that it's just a normal, human tendency to have no opinion on whatever your government is doing. Rather, it's part of social conditioning to conform to our own cultural norms regarding political opinion and engagement. In some societies, we can be so opinionated that it becomes a problem for us. Other societies, like Russia, could have the opposite problem wherein people avoid having an opinion because caring about politics would just remind them of how little power they have over their government's policy-making process.

If your society is long since non free or free but with most issues solved, your normal would be to have much less opinions about government's actions " No, it's really not a matter of how many "issues" your society is living with. Weirdly, it's the contrary. For instance, the Netherlands and my country, Canada. The NL is one of very few places that I might choose to live other than Canada. Both our societies have high standards of living, high ratings for happiness, long life expectancies, low rates of crime and addiction, high rates of education, etc. You would think we are all pretty content and have nothing to criticize wrt our politics, but it's just not the case. It's the opposite. When people live in societies where all their basic needs are easily met and most opportunities to fulfill their desires are available to everyone, they feel a sense of agency, of belonging, responsibility, even some degree of personal sovereignty when it comes to their thoughts on public policy. It sounds a bit romantic, but I think we feel our rights and freedoms in a very personal and social way. Maksim Katz talks about how we freak out over a couple of points of inflation, and he's right. We are actually a bit silly about relatively minor problems like that, in my opinion. We also get very concerned about discrimination and infringement of personal or minority rights, even though we don't have very serious or systemic problems with that, anymore. It's hard to imagine myself into such a different perspective and then explain how democracies are different, but I guess I would put it this way: We think we own our political system, and therefore we care about it quite a lot. I think this is the basis of checks and balances within our systems: Mutual self-interest and mutual respect. Mutual concern and some sense of personal-social ownership of our cities, states, country. I hope that makes sense. It's a very different way of thinking. I've visited some less democratic countries, and people regard the government and its forces much like we regard the weather. Namely they might be awful, but it's a waste of time and emotional energy to complain about them very much. People in less democratic systems concern themselves with things that they can control on a day to day basis because it doesn't feel very rewarding or effective to complain about the weather - or about their politics. Our tendency to be highly opinionated and personally engaged is naturally beneficial. The more people complain about their democracy, the healthier it is, as a rule. But there is an important exception, and that is when there is a sense of alienation or when the society is transitioning to a different self-concept. The US struggles with racism because of its history, and most of its current problems with partisanship find their roots there. Canada is more multi-cultural and multi-ethnic than the US, but our burden of history is less heavy than theirs is, so we don't really struggle with it too much, at least so far. The UK went from being an empire and great world power to being kind of troubled and ordinary in the span of one lifetime. It's not coping very well with that, of late. So in times like that our democracies can get a bit troubled. But it's not because of our sense of engagement or our tendency to be opinionated, as such, rather it's about our sense of alienation. I hope that makes sense.

And when that happens with any material that dares to criticize (or even analyze) russia, on ANY social media platform, one thing is certain... The bots are coming. These people are often literally being paid by the russian government to shift and form the public opinion. It's highly likely this is one of them. Regardless, as someone who is somewhat familiar with the context of it all, I can assure you that she never supported any of those things, it's just a lie. As for the "burning house" comment, it is completely taken out of context, like they usually do. It was an answer to some question and the illustration of a point that every country deals with its own set of problems first etc... It's just a caution to you and anyone else reading this comment: be aware of this issue anytime russia is being openly discussed on social media platforms. You can actually scroll through the comments under this video and see for yourself. I'm not saying every critical comment is a troll, but the nature of the majority of the negative comments is... questionable. They don't even criticize the lecture, they attack the character. Calling her "traitor", "working for the west", or even "defending russia" (which is the opposite opinion, yet it still paints her as biased and untrustworthy as a presenter, because that is their goal) and reminding everyone of her Jewish last name as proof of something (??). You wouldn't normally expect this type of people under a university lecture in these amounts. One last thing that can sometimes help to distinguish these types of accounts: just check when it was created. For some reason, they often create a new one for every mission they're given. Great lecture! I liked it so much, talking about the tough situation in Russia in such a positive and dynamic way is catchy! The humor, professionalism and expertise are the traits that make Ekaterina so special. The only thing that made me wonder… why didn’t they (Ekaterina or maybe her team, idk) translate the text on the slides into English? It would be more convenient for non-Russian visitors of the lecture to perceive information
She has translated them. What's problem? And these picture are not their statistics, pictures from sources maybe like russian media or yandex, google photos, and etc.
Actually Ekaterina is always baffled when someone says her words are positive. It's just her manner of speaking is lively and her voice is high. But what she's actually saying is usually quite depressing.

Похоже, министерства там отсортированы в порядке убывания по количеству невыполненных поручений, но это только количественный показатель, а не пропорция к общему количеству поручений на контроле. В пропорции к общему количеству на контроле похоже, что по всем министерствам доля невыполненных поручений примерно одинаковая, около 60 процентов (можно посчитать точнее). То есть Минфин в процентном отношении невыполненных поручений +/- на том же уровне, что и Минобороны, просто у него на порядок больше поручений, поэтому он оказался в топе)
Да, тоже удивило сравнение по абсолютным значениям. Если пересчитать в %, то окажется например что Минфин исполняет 73% своих поручений, а Роскосмос - 65%, то есть Минфин на самом деле более исполнительный :) А самым неэффективным с этой точки зрения ведомством окажется Минобрнауки

Такое часто случается, когда хочется обосновать свою позицию данными, а данные твою позицию не подтверждают. Если читать научные исследования, такое встречается везде и всюду (потому что publish or perish), поэтому в науке сам факт публикации (включая и peer-reviewed) никак не подтверждает верности выводов, в каждом случае надо оценивать аргументацию самому.

Thank you for sharing such an interesting fact, I didn't know it. Though I noticed that current situation in Russia is similar to US during America's war in Vietnam in a way - people are changing their opinions over time from supporting the war to have an opinion in the middle, and from the middle to peace supporters. I'm sure once soldiers and those who have the physical power will have enough of that it - the government will have no choice but to stop it at once. However we have to rework the whole government either way.

The statement is absolutely factually wrong. There could be no social contract in authoritarian regimes. The do meddle in people's affairs, and that is THE reason why authoritarian regimes are bad.
As I have re-intensified my lifelong amateur studies of Russian history during this (phase of the) war in Ukraine, there are two things which continually astonish me. One is how VERY many parallels there are between the conquest of Russia's internal empire and those of the USA, and the other is how VERY determined Americans are not to recognize these. The conquest of lands, the subjugation of peoples, the bureaucratizing of local governance by means of federal financing and programs, the extreme inequalities between urban middle class and rural poor, the conspicuous rule of oligarchies permanently installed in power, and the ongoing claims by an idiotic, corrupt and entirely ignorant central regime that everything is going just fine, or if it isn't somebody else is to blame.... All we have that Russia doesn't is better access to the world oceans. An accident of geography is all that makes the USA an apparent consumers' paradise, where purchasing power equals freedom, or close enough. True liberty according to our own founding documents is something most Americans have only the most primitive conception of, or none at all. Ask an American what the First Amendment says, and they'll usually say 'freedom of speech.' Yes, and a number of other specific things, which include 'the right of the people to petition their government for the redress of grievances', but mention that to your average American and you're likely to get a blank stare followed by a changed subject, like back to college ball or something, that matters more to them....

I appreciate your comment and your genuine interest in understanding Russia. This country is much more complex than "140 mln orcs supporting the war". Big cities, like Moscow, St-Pet, Ekaterinburgh, Novosibirsk are very different from the regions, yet within regions there're national republics which are totally different from the rest of Russia. Also, there're different social groups within each. So, when I hear "the average Russian people", I always want to ask - which Russian people are you talking about.

Amazingly watched the entire lecture. Interesting that the ones with the most money in Russia support the war the most. Also hopeful that there is a sharp contrast in age groups and the younger people are more open minded to Democracy. And the cliffhanger is the 180 degree change in attitudes (indifference to alarm) when mobilization started and when Putin has skipped major annual speaking events, etc..Also need to explore more now the 'reverse cargo cult' concept. Thanks for the lecture Ekaterina and Sciences Po for providing the platform. There would be no other way for me to hear opinions like this except for this medium
Young people watch TV less than older people, and they use the internet to read news, so they are not brainwashed so severely.
I really enjoy listening to Ms Schulmann and admire her stubborn optimism. I wish that she would speak in English more often. She brings a richness and depth of context and understanding when she does speak to the rest of us who live outside Russia.
I have to say, though, that while it might be normal for people to not have opinions on political policy in Russia, it isn't normal for those of us who live in democratic countries. Indeed, our great tendency to be politically opinionated can sometimes be a problem for us. The US is the best case in point for that right now since it is perpetually mired in partisan disagreement so serious that it can even affect relationships, families, workplaces, the good function of the government and the general peace of society as a whole. The UK was recently another striking case-in-point with the self-inflicted societal, economic and political wound that was Brexit.
Sometimes our opinions are thoughtful, careful and well-informed, and sometimes they are just not any of those things. But almost all of us who live in Western democracies feel like it's very important to have an opinion on political policy.
So it can't be true that it's just a normal, human tendency to have no opinion on whatever your government is doing. Rather, it's part of social conditioning to conform to our own cultural norms regarding political opinion and engagement. In some societies, we can be so opinionated that it becomes a problem for us. Other societies, like Russia, could have the opposite problem wherein people avoid having an opinion because caring about politics would just remind them of how little power they have over their government's policy-making process.

No, it's really not a matter of how many "issues" your society is living with. Weirdly, it's the contrary. For instance, the Netherlands and my country, Canada. The NL is one of very few places that I might choose to live other than Canada. Both our societies have high standards of living, high ratings for happiness, long life expectancies, low rates of crime and addiction, high rates of education, etc.
You would think we are all pretty content and have nothing to criticize wrt our politics, but it's just not the case. It's the opposite. When people live in societies where all their basic needs are easily met and most opportunities to fulfill their desires are available to everyone, they feel a sense of agency, of belonging, responsibility, even some degree of personal sovereignty when it comes to their thoughts on public policy. It sounds a bit romantic, but I think we feel our rights and freedoms in a very personal and social way.
Maksim Katz talks about how we freak out over a couple of points of inflation, and he's right. We are actually a bit silly about relatively minor problems like that, in my opinion. We also get very concerned about discrimination and infringement of personal or minority rights, even though we don't have very serious or systemic problems with that, anymore. It's hard to imagine myself into such a different perspective and then explain how democracies are different, but I guess I would put it this way: We think we own our political system, and therefore we care about it quite a lot. I think this is the basis of checks and balances within our systems: Mutual self-interest and mutual respect. Mutual concern and some sense of personal-social ownership of our cities, states, country.
I hope that makes sense. It's a very different way of thinking. I've visited some less democratic countries, and people regard the government and its forces much like we regard the weather. Namely they might be awful, but it's a waste of time and emotional energy to complain about them very much. People in less democratic systems concern themselves with things that they can control on a day to day basis because it doesn't feel very rewarding or effective to complain about the weather - or about their politics.
Our tendency to be highly opinionated and personally engaged is naturally beneficial. The more people complain about their democracy, the healthier it is, as a rule. But there is an important exception, and that is when there is a sense of alienation or when the society is transitioning to a different self-concept. The US struggles with racism because of its history, and most of its current problems with partisanship find their roots there. Canada is more multi-cultural and multi-ethnic than the US, but our burden of history is less heavy than theirs is, so we don't really struggle with it too much, at least so far. The UK went from being an empire and great world power to being kind of troubled and ordinary in the span of one lifetime. It's not coping very well with that, of late.
So in times like that our democracies can get a bit troubled. But it's not because of our sense of engagement or our tendency to be opinionated, as such, rather it's about our sense of alienation. I hope that makes sense.
It's better to be apolitical than a nationalist, isn't it? I think no one would be upset if Hitler decided not to participate in the politics of his country.

And when that happens with any material that dares to criticize (or even analyze) russia, on ANY social media platform, one thing is certain... The bots are coming. These people are often literally being paid by the russian government to shift and form the public opinion. It's highly likely this is one of them.
Regardless, as someone who is somewhat familiar with the context of it all, I can assure you that she never supported any of those things, it's just a lie. As for the "burning house" comment, it is completely taken out of context, like they usually do. It was an answer to some question and the illustration of a point that every country deals with its own set of problems first etc...
It's just a caution to you and anyone else reading this comment: be aware of this issue anytime russia is being openly discussed on social media platforms.

I'm not saying every critical comment is a troll, but the nature of the majority of the negative comments is... questionable. They don't even criticize the lecture, they attack the character. Calling her "traitor", "working for the west", or even "defending russia" (which is the opposite opinion, yet it still paints her as biased and untrustworthy as a presenter, because that is their goal) and reminding everyone of her Jewish last name as proof of something (??). You wouldn't normally expect this type of people under a university lecture in these amounts.
One last thing that can sometimes help to distinguish these types of accounts: just check when it was created. For some reason, they often create a new one for every mission they're given. This one was created **checks notes** 11 hours ago..

Great lecture! I liked it so much, talking about the tough situation in Russia in such a positive and dynamic way is catchy! The humor, professionalism and expertise are the traits that make Ekaterina so special.
The only thing that made me wonder… why didn’t they (Ekaterina or maybe her team, idk) translate the text on the slides into English? It would be more convenient for non-Russian visitors of the lecture to perceive information
She has translated them. What's problem? And these picture are not their statistics, pictures from sources maybe like russian media or yandex, google photos, and etc.
Actually Ekaterina is always baffled when someone says her words are positive. It's just her manner of speaking is lively and her voice is high. But what she's actually saying is usually quite depressing.

Похоже, министерства там отсортированы в порядке убывания по количеству невыполненных поручений, но это только количественный показатель, а не пропорция к общему количеству поручений на контроле.
В пропорции к общему количеству на контроле похоже, что по всем министерствам доля невыполненных поручений примерно одинаковая, около 60 процентов (можно посчитать точнее).
То есть Минфин в процентном отношении невыполненных поручений +/- на том же уровне, что и Минобороны, просто у него на порядок больше поручений, поэтому он оказался в топе)
Да, тоже удивило сравнение по абсолютным значениям. Если пересчитать в %, то окажется например что Минфин исполняет 73% своих поручений, а Роскосмос - 65%, то есть Минфин на самом деле более исполнительный :) А самым неэффективным с этой точки зрения ведомством окажется Минобрнауки
Тоталиратрные режимы построены на лояльности и подчинении интересам правящего класса. Как в армии. Путина готовили в роли Пиночета еще в 1991м, но сначала надо было сломать социалистические демократические механизмы в стране, поэтому проводили колонизацию с помощью советников Горбачева, в числе которых и были эти двое... Такое часто случается, когда хочется обосновать свою позицию данными, а данные твою позицию не подтверждают.
Если читать научные исследования, такое встречается везде и всюду (потому что publish or perish), поэтому в науке сам факт публикации (включая и peer-reviewed) никак не подтверждает верности выводов, в каждом случае надо оценивать аргументацию самому.

At 1:03.22 she says she doesn't know of another similar age disparity in the support for a war: Read about America in 1968. The young (including me) almost uniformly opposed America's war in Vietnam and older people tended to support it.
Thank you for sharing such an interesting fact, I didn't know it. Though I noticed that current situation in Russia is similar to US during America's war in Vietnam in a way - people are changing their opinions over time from supporting the war to have an opinion in the middle, and from the middle to peace supporters. I'm sure once soldiers and those who have the physical power will have enough of that it - the government will have no choice but to stop it at once. However we have to rework the whole government either way.

The statement is absolutely factually wrong. There could be no social contract in authoritarian regimes. The do meddle in people's affairs, and that is THE reason why authoritarian regimes are bad.
As I have re-intensified my lifelong amateur studies of Russian history during this (phase of the) war in Ukraine, there are two things which continually astonish me. One is how VERY many parallels there are between the conquest of Russia's internal empire and those of the USA, and the other is how VERY determined Americans are not to recognize these. The conquest of lands, the subjugation of peoples, the bureaucratizing of local governance by means of federal financing and programs, the extreme inequalities between urban middle class and rural poor, the conspicuous rule of oligarchies permanently installed in power, and the ongoing claims by an idiotic, corrupt and entirely ignorant central regime that everything is going just fine, or if it isn't somebody else is to blame....
All we have that Russia doesn't is better access to the world oceans. An accident of geography is all that makes the USA an apparent consumers' paradise, where purchasing power equals freedom, or close enough. True liberty according to our own founding documents is something most Americans have only the most primitive conception of, or none at all. Ask an American what the First Amendment says, and they'll usually say 'freedom of speech.' Yes, and a number of other specific things, which include 'the right of the people to petition their government for the redress of grievances', but mention that to your average American and you're likely to get a blank stare followed by a changed subject, like back to college ball or something, that matters more to them....
@@klarachiamarsi5935 Exactly. The US is good and the countries the good US is against are bad. The good countries like the US cannot meddle in people's affairs, because they are good, and the bad countries cannot do without meddling in people's affairs, because they are bad. It's as simple as that.
Ahhh...not to take anything away from the valid points you make about the sorry state of U.S. democracy, but I don't buy the moral equivalency argument when I see Russian tanks rolling across borders in the name of "Denazification" and systematic war crimes in Irpin, Kherson, Bucha, Dnipro shellings. The Russians/россияне have no monopoly on imperialism, but I think I would rather be an Iraqi in US-occupied Baghdad than a Ukrainian in Mariupol or Bucha.
