We used cloth diapers for our two…both were in diapers at the same time right after my youngest was born. We just did not have the money for Pampers. We also felt better about using cloth diapers on their skin. I will admit though, trying to guide the safety pin at 3 am while my eyes were barely functioning was always challenging lol.

We were fortunate to be able to use a diaper service back in the day(1994). For us, the diaper service was more cost effective than buying the cloth diapers and washing and drying ourselves(I am certain times have changed price wise, or even if there are any diaper services around anymore). I applaud you for using cloth diapers for economy but for environmental as well. We had such a backlash from family members("your baby will wake you up in the middle of the night to change the diaper"). Yeah, and our son never had diaper rash either! It was cool when we told my parents we were using diaper service. My Mom mentioned that it was the same diaper service they used for me(1960)(having no washer and dryer in our home). Thank you for talking about this, so important!😊

Disposables had come when I had my first daughter ; out of reach financially. I had watched my mother, and other women first rinse the dirty diaper in the toilet, flushing a few times as they went along. In our garage we had the wringer washer ready to go, all the time. After about an accumulation of 6 to 10 dirty diapers, we started the washer up with a tub of hot, hot water with some Tide, and a small amount of bleach, and it washed, and agitated until mom would check the small load to be clean. Next diapers wrung out into a tub of cold water to rinse, and agitate by hand. Final step after rinsing ,and diapers were wrung out they were hung to dry. In northern New Mexico where we are from we have sun almost 365 days a year, even in winter the sun breaks through the clouds.
The most beautiful sight was hanging those white as white diapers on the clothes line!!!
We were 5 girls and one boy in our family and now when I look back how our mother ran our small house, I miss the closeness we were building doing our chores, and there were plenty.

Hi Alicia- sounds like you have cloth diapers down to a science! I have worked for years in an infant room. We have only had a handful of parents that used cloth diapers. Many times the diapers didn’t appear clean and the babies who wore them were consistently chafed. So glad that your having a good experience with them. Love your girls, they are 👼🏻 babies!

    • @sahmhotmessexpress
      @sahmhotmessexpress  Год назад +7

Sometimes people don't change their babies as often when they're wearing cloth diapers which leads to chaffing or a rash. And I don't know if people that use cloth diapers wash them properly or not, but mine are all still as white as the day I got them😆🩷🩷

We had a diaper pail filled with water and Dreft detergent. If they had pooped, then they were rinsed out in the toilet before going in the diaper pail. It was very exciting when you lost your grip on the diaper and flushed it down the toilet! 🙄😳 I had no dryer so hung them on a clothes rack by the furnace to dry! When my son came along 21 months later, the diapers were getting quite thin and worn out so I would put 2 diapers together, making sure the holes did NOT match up! TADA Fun times! Your girls are so sweet! I just love their excitement over their food!

Wow…that’s a lot of work even for one baby. I used cloth because disposables were fairly new and still pretty pricey. It was a simple fold and pin on. The only pain was that you had to replace the rubber pants often because they would go all hard and crunchy after several trips in the dryer. That must be quite an investment.

Even tbe disposables had to use diaper pins in the early 1970s. I think Pampers was the only one. No elastic either. Then whenthey added fape it was one try to stick it correctly ecause the diaper tore when youd remove the tape. The big thing that happened when my 40 year old childrenwere small was refastenable tape. I still remember seeing the commercials. By then we also had Huggiesand Luvs which had elast8c. At that time Pampers and Luvs would cause a rash so we stuck with Huggies. Darn, I'm old.

Lot of work but totally worth it.
I use a bidet every time m, 1 or 2 and I sew a lot and I made a ton of wipes out of old clothes.
    I LOVE using them.
I started this during the “you know”.
A little wire basket from the junk store holds the used which are always clean hence the bidet.
A clean little basket I made sewing or get one from dollar store.
If I have a guest, lol I stow away and place TP out.

I'm in Australia (we call diapers nappies!) We had three babies in nappies when our twins were born and we used cloth as well. I had to use two different ways to fold as I had a girl as well as twin boys. It was a lot of work but much more economical than disposables, not to mention the landfill!

In the 60s disposable diapers were not available everywhere if at all, so cloth diapers with solid waste would be rinsed in clean toilet water. Removing solid waste with a paper or something similar was not practical since baby's bottom usually squished the stuff. There were two type of cloth diapers, birdseye and gauze. Gauze were more absorbent and softer but also more expensive than birdseye. Both kinds had to be folded to fit the baby bottom. Mostly detergent was Dreft or Ivory Snow, which was more anti-allergic than Dreft. And of course, there was a waterproof cover to keep bedding and clothing dry. Boy, that brings back memories.

I used dreft when the girls first came home and then switched to all free and clear😊 I rinse the poo in the toilet, but got a bidet hose to make the rinsing easier😆💗💗

This turned out long

My oldest son was born in 1970…EONS ago!!!😂🤣😂 I had a diaper service (cloth diapers also) for the first month and then I was on my own. Disposables were just coming out around that time. But my son too was allergic to the plastic and would break out around his tummy and legs where the plastic touched him. So I only used them when we went camping. And we used diaper pins. Even when the disposables first came out we used diaper pins as there was no tape on them. We had “safety diaper pins” that wouldn’t pop open and stick into the baby. Eventually they came out with the disposables with tape, but the tape wasn’t a very good quality and didn’t always hold the diaper very well. Yes, times have certainly changed, but much for the better…at least in the diaper area!!! 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸

Wow! So many changes since I had my babies in the 70's. I used cloth diapers also. But what I didn't like was the horrible diaper pins, they would come undone sometimes. And then there was the plastic pants that went over the diaper, they would get holes in them and fall apart. I did make their own baby food though and loved that.

My babies were born early 70’s and allergic to disposable diapers. You mentioned the plastic panties we put over the cloth diaper. I bet our babies sweated while wearing those things. I wanted to ask you if you called them rubber pants? I’m wondering if I was the only one who called them rubber pants. I know my three sisters called them that too. I think we learned that from our mother. Did you call them rubber pants? I remember how hard and stiff they would get after putting them in the dryer too many times. And sometimes almost melting because I’d leave them in too long. I was only 18 with my first baby. By the time I had my second I figured out that rubber pants shouldn’t go in the dryer 😂🤣
