I FOUND this video very touching. My father worked a lot but I had a good relationship with him. Not as much as I would have liked but it was a good one. My father was the kind of guy though that if I pitched this idea of a trip to him, he would have made time and came just to spend some time with his son. Seems your father, Miles, shares the same here. My father is no longer around anymore. Keep making great memories when you have the opportunity. ~Bless

Come to think of it, most of the good memories I have with my mother were on some kind of transit -- I remember discussing combinatorics on some train in China, being on dozens of buses in Beijing where you paid an attendant standing on a protected platform mid-bus (and I guess it was her job to yell at you if you didn't get off when you said you were?), or just happily (or unconflictingly) being with each other on a very slow local bus that shadowed the A train up to the Cloisters (we took the subway back).

My mom was born in northern NJ but lived in the Miami area for a bit before she moved back to the NYC metro...she hated the Miami weather and preferred the Northeast's cooler climate (the rest of her family ended up moving back to the NYC metro as well). When she was in Miami, neither Tri-Rail, the Metromover, nor Metrorail were a thing and she felt isolated. She's told me about how her dad worked for Tropicana as a truck driver, and she would tag along with him to do runs to Key West. They went to the Keys when the OLD Seven Mile Bridge was still in operation, and she was scared of it...seeing the old bridge, I don't blame her. But I still appreciate the railroad history behind it since it's unique.
Also your dad is right when it comes to pronouncing conch (like a conk on the noggin!). The people of the Keys call themselves Conchs, and their micronation the Conch Republic, and they don't like it if you say it the other way.

I’ve found this video very nice. My grandfather passed away in March and him and I used to go from Government Center to Dadeland mall. We grabbed the same exact bus you took from there all the way to Florida city. I loved watching this. Thanks for giving reminding me of a nice memory.

Ah yes, the southernmost point buoy...wait until all those tourists realize that buoy is actually misleading, that's NOT the southernmost point in the continental US. Fort Zachary Taylor State Park as well as Whitehead Spit in the nearby naval air station are actually more southern than there. But not even Whitehead Spit is the southernmost point! The southernmost point in the continental US is, if it's continuously above water, Ballast Key OR if it counts if it's occasionally above water at low tide, the Western Dry Rocks
And the roosters you saw at 10:39 are descendants of those bred in Cuba for fighting. Cubans have historically built Key West. Cubans began migrating there in the 1830s! Before tourism, Key West had a big CIGAR industry! It was once known as the cigar manufacturing capital of the world! Key West was so Cuban that José Marti went there in 1892 to rally their support for Cuban independence from Spain

At 05:00. You'll notice a blue sticker that says stuff in English and French. That's because this bus is from Canada, specifically Toronto. What's hidden in the video is the sticker has an ontario logo

@@MilesinTransit LOL how did you miss that? The bus should have been in full GO Transit livery with a simple Miami Dade Transit logo slapped on top.
One bus I was on even had 2 fleet numbers. Their old GO one and new Miami one.

Fun journey. I believe that the there is an MDT express bus that takes the Florida turnpike to Florida city so you can avoid all those red lights on the busway. And I think they are fixing the traffic light situation so they will change to green for oncoming buses which will make quite a difference.

Thanks for another great long distance transit trip. I was glad to hear you had a good return trip on Greyhound and the fare seemed reasonable for basically an express trip. But it is always interesting to see the different types of busses used on each segment. That bus used to get to Marathon Key was really nice and appropriate for a two hour trip. Have fun on your future trips. I look forward to all your new ones.

Great Transit Vlog! The Busway is built on the Right of Way that Metro Rail was built on and there have been plans to extend Metrorail all they way down to Homestead since Miami-Dade County owns the ROW. The issue is that Heavy Rail expansion is costly and Miami needs Federal Monies to make that happen. The Voters approved that Extension in 2002. By the way the Metro Mover is going to be expanded to South Beach starting in the next year or two !

Did you stay overnight in KW? Did you get to see a Sunset Celebration on Mallory Square, pet the cats at Hemingway's house, walk through the Butterfly House and Nature Conservatory, or visit the Harry S. Truman Little White House? Did you at least put your bare feet in the beautiful clear waters? I like knowing how transit works in other cities but I'd be happy to see little special interest forays to spice things up a bit. Thanks for sharing!

Miles, this may only be tangentially related, but it's something I'd be surprised if you knew: from 1912 to 1935, the Florida East Coast Railway had an extension of their Jacksonville-Miami main line out along the Florida Keys to Key West, but it was destroyed by a hurricane.

@@MilesinTransit I absolutely LOVE hearing about these historical routes that no longer exist, especially if they have some unique quality to them. Another one in a similar vein is the Milwaukee Road's Pacific Extension, an electrified route from Minneapolis/Saint Paul out to Seattle that was lost due to horribly corrupt mismanagement in the Milwaukee Road's corporate office. It's a fascinating read if you find the time to dig into the story
