The Mizzen Mast Step - Episode 154 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

  • With the main mast step finished, it's time to make the mizzen mast step. This one is significantly smaller as it will hold a significantly smaller mast and take less of a load. It feels like we're installing a sculpture as integral part of the boat! It's very satisfying to be making beautiful things that then come together into a working final product.
    We also get started on another very exciting project which will be coming up in more videos soon. Many of the re-sawn offcuts from the planking material have been sitting in the shop waiting to be used. Now is their time to shine!
    Thank you for watching this week, and as always, for the support.

    Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

    Many years ago my family, my dad and the rest of us, built a colin archer replicated ship with some changes to make it look a bit like a pirate ship. We had lots of fun with that ship and lived on it each summer months for several years. Anyway, form that I learned a lot about ship building and one thing we had to change was how the mast was locked into the hull. We followed the original plans, but soon found out that the seating was not good enough, the mast turned due to the sailing we did. Because of that we redesigned the whole thing and made a track that the mast had to go into before it was fully seated. The bottom of the mast had 1/4 of it flattened out and a match hole to fit into. That stopped the turning problem and we gained a function that was unplanned. Suddenly the mast was able to stand up by it self as long as you seated it correctly.
    Everything about that ship was add hocked or fix to work, but still it worked and gave us a lot of memories, both good and some bad.

    So, I'm thinking about the year 2142 ( I will be 190 years old then) when someone finds Arabella tucked away behind a sail loft in Freeport, ME. She's been on the hard for 30 years. These guys that find her are impressed with the artisanship, skill, and care that went into her construction and think, "she's well-founded, maybe replace a few planks here and there and let's go sailing". This boat will last well into the next century. Keep it up.

    Steve, you are an absolute artist with that shipwright's adze! I have to mention again that the design of that mizzen step is the same structural time bomb as the mainmast step. If your floor web welds fatigue and fracture, the floor web is an end loaded column which is unstable. The webs will collapse under the forces from the masts and the step will drop between the "ears" of the floors possibly wedging the hull planks open...the forces will be in that direction. Strongly recommend that you have a practicing structural engineer look at the design. Still, it's a lovely piece of woodworking!

    • @geoffreystearns1690
      @geoffreystearns1690 3 года назад +1

      Replying to my own post, At a minimum I'd suggest blocking under both steps so that the failsafe configuration transfers the vertical mast loads directly to the keel and not laterally to the ribs and planking.

    Are you going to have enough room to service the engine from inside the boat? Looks like there might not be much room between pulleys and mast to change belts, pull pulleys etc?

    • @tomaskrashevsky818
      @tomaskrashevsky818 2 года назад

      I had similar thought, it reduces access to the engine, creates another hole in a deck above, which needs proper seal, and actually it is an over-engineering. The down forces of the mast are not that great and I would think that original design was properly calculated for that. Masts in general, take forward and side forces and they are of much greater magnitude. Also, mizzen mast has only single sail. For me, the only good reason for doing so would be removal of shrouds, so having self-holding mast.
      Don't get me wrong, I admire all your fantastic work, skills, precision and forward thinking. It is very interesting project and I can't wait to see her sail :)

    I have to say, I've gotten a couple shirts from your merch stores, and they have been very comfortable, I was very impressed with that!
    Definitely going to try to get one of these Akiva shirts!

    SV Ness from Port Townsend Wa. capsized while on the Atlantic, it nearly killed the skipper Phillip Sax, twice. once on the way over, again on the way back right. he thought to sell her after that... but, he reconsidered after realizing he didn't die. She is now homed in NC. God bless you Phillip.

      The Atlantic is a mean piece of water.
      I've heard of submarines 400ft down getting smacked with 45deg rolls! Edit: and you normally can't feel the rolls *at all* below 200ft, even though subs roll like a drunken pig on the surface due to the round hull.

      @@ScottKenny1978 Not for much longer tho. As a species, we've managed to frak things up so badly, marine currents are changing patterns and intensities right under our very noses. It's gone from "it will never happen" to "not in our life time" to "oh, shit, "that" movie was actually pretty damn spot on, if you ignore the hollywood killer ice storms".

    I frequently wonder how fast this boat could have been built with any army running nonstop

    • @michaeltouchette8156

      ya, being in construction and having lived the last 40 years playing the game 'how fast can you build this' I often wonder myself. The project manager in me says I could build it in 6 months..... ok need about 25 men to do so.... AND all wood cured and ready for assembly..... AND a full shop with quadruple the machinery..... but, this is the fun way, I envy Steve getting do do all of this himself. Leading 25 men you wouldn't get the chance to touch much of the wood. great job guys, we live vicariously through you
