    In today's video we take a look at a brand new tool in PrusaSlicer 2.4 called Multi Material Painting. This powerful feature allows you to take just about any model regardless of whether it was designed for dual extrusion, and convert it to a dual or multi material model. We will go over how to set this up, how to use the different tools, and of course we will try it out on a couple of models. After this, you should be ready to paint models of your own.

      What printer did you end up going with?? Was it the Weedoo? JG? You are going to love this then. Hopefully someone already has a profile for Prusa Slicer. The biggest issue I have been having which is evident in the print quality is the tool changing. This printer is optimized with their version of Cura but the filament swap and stinging/glooping in the Prusa Profile they gave me needs work.

    Prusa Slicer just works for me when few others do. Particularly for non-standard setups. Their extra features are just a bonus. Their being based on the Open-Source Slic3r just seals the deal. You know a majority of the tech will be available to the community for ANY project in the future.

    • @avejst
      @avejst 2 года назад

      @@ModBotArmy I have tried the super Slicer, and I think the surface quality is not quite there yet.
      We made some slices with Super Slicer, and the prints didn't have the same precision or surface quality that the PrusaSlicer have. And then you have twice the control parameter in the slicer. That can be good - if you know what you are doing - but it was not good enough for me and my college.

    • @cnc-maker
      @cnc-maker 2 года назад

      You can export your configurations from PrusaSlicer and import them into SuperSlicer, as SuperSlicer is derived from PrusaSlicer with additional functionality. That being said, you will need to tune the additional functionality before it will print as good as, or better than PrusaSlicer. Once you’ve done that, it will print better than PrusaSlicer, but there is a bit of a lag time between when something is released on PrusaSlicer, and when it is available on SuperSlicer.

    Did you try saving as a .3mf file? This has been my go-to format when printing large mechanical assemblies as it has robust support for multiple bodies built in. I.e. Prusa and Slic3r can split up multi-body .stl but Cura needs individual files while .3mf just works for all 3.

    • @ModBotArmy

      Yeah so purge block depends. If you have purge buckets or some alternative wipe system you can get away without. Right now it depends on the hardware used. I agree there is still room for slicer optimization.

    • @therealmakmillion

      PrusaSlicer has the ability to print color change into infill, to a purge block or a combination of the two. This is prior to the 2.4 alpha, but I’m sure it will still exist in the next release.

    • @ModBotArmy

      That is dependent on the printer. Since this feature is slicer/software and really dual extrusion has had advancements but on the software side this is the biggest I can think of. The dual extrusion printer mentioned will get a video as well 👍

      @@ModBotArmy my first and only 3D printer is a Geetech A10M i have been extremely happy with this printer. I think dual extruder is the only way to go unless you have a Pallet System, i love doing gradient prints, the best thing is that the facebook group that has a QR code printer from the factory on the chassis, is still being used by people there is a great community there and i ask them if i have issues and that’s awesome it’s free of charge.
      i can’t wait to see some more videos especially about dual extruder printing.

    Which printers do not work with Prucia slicer? I was considering getting a Neptune but I know Elegoo likes to lock down their hardware

      It is more the pricey machines like MakerBot, Ultimaker at least the new S5/S3, machines running the MakerBot boards that take the XG3 file type., There are definitely quite a few others though. The Neptune from Elegoo should have no issues. Elegoo has their new resin printers locked down but that is because their printers use Chitu Systems mainboards and Chitu Systems implemented this.

    • @ModBotArmy
      @ModBotArmy  2 года назад +1

      Interesting. If it is at a certain height then I would think that it may be related to the extruder or bowden tube. Make sure the path is clear and that it is not getting pinched at a certain height. Also make sure that the PLA is not breaking at a certain point. Also, it could be heat creep. I have not seen it on a Creality printer with normal settings but that is a common thing that as a print goes on the heat rises and softens the filament. Maybe try a pet-g to see if it happens. It has a higher melt temp so heat creep is less drastic.

    You do not need multiple extruders or a filamentchanger. You can use M600 as toolchange command, to manually change the filament.
    I often use this for labeling frontplates. With a PEI powder coated spring steel, the bottom side is the later frontside.
    If you for example want to print the frontplate (while printing: the bottom) in multicolour, the filament change is only be done in the first three layers. So to use 3 colours, you paint your Logo/Text to the bottom, and than you start with your first filament. The order actually is 1,2,3 (layerchange, no filamentchange) 1, 2 (layerchange, no filamentchange), 1, 3 ((layerchange, filamentchange only if main body is not filament number 3). So just 6 manual filament changes to do.
    I printed a lot of coloured objects this way (mostly front for Prusa Mini / Display housings for mk3s). Of course not with paint function (wasent available at the time) mut using diferent objects for the different colours.
    In this scenario make shure using a skirt with the number of skirtlines eqals the number of virtual extruders. Prusa Slicer than do one skirtline per filament and prime the nozzle. Also manualy editing the gcode is recomended: Move every M600 down a few lines, after the next line starting g1 x... y... Thats the first segment of the skirtline. M600 always return to the point it came from. It might be oozing a bit. We do not want the ooze to fall in the object. By moving the m600 after the first skirt segment, any ooze would fall into the skirtline. If possible use a distance of 1 cm or more between skirt and object. Also the hight of the skirt has to be at least the number of the last layer with a layerchange.
    Of course same way to multicolour the flat top of a print.
    Multiple extruders are only needed if you want multicolour on the sides or curved top as manual change wouldn't be managable there.
    So even 16 (virtual) extruders can be quite usefull, its "only" 45 manual filament changes, if you embed it in your Object. If I remember correctly, the c64 had 16 colours. So if have a well handled old 64 and want a uniqe box for your game cadriges or disks - why not use a screenshot of your favorite game to print onto the lid?
    Two example prints using the manual method:
