You mention "paying the tax" for buying a knife, not liking it and selling it for less. To me that is "reinvesting in your community"! It is a great show of character when people help their community compared to helping themselves. I would like to see a "show me your intro collection". Basically those that are getting into the EDC world, how they got involved and what have they started with. Like 3 knives, 4 flash lights, 2 wallets, 6 tools in a picture.

Love your comments about Gatekeeping. As someone who, right now, is just starting to move out of super-budget stuff; I've found you to more than helpful in picking out really good budget gear. The O-lights, Gerbers and Timexes of the world are all some can afford, but you make us feel welcome and part of the community. You also give us something to dream about with some of the other gear you showcase. Thanks, Taylor.

I think most collectors do a terrible job of differentiating between "luxury" or "designer" and "high quality". O light flashlights for example are incredibly well made, and if you spend more on a flashlight, most of the time you're paying for luxury materials and not more toughness or reliability.

Well said Taylor! As a watchmaker I’m always asked that dreaded question on what to buy depending on their budget.

Watchmaker here. I answer the "what watch should I get" with:
What are you going to do with it? What kinda work do they do? Do they wanna know the time or flex? Do you work with water? Is there a certain watch you've seen on TV or out in public that attracted you?
These questions narrow down what watch they want BY A LOT.

You hit on a bunch of my pet peeves as well. Especially scalping and being a douche elitist on social media! God has blessed me, like you, with the ability to afford pretty much whatever I want. That said, I still enjoy some pretty budget carry’s and think it’s disgusting when folks act like someone’s choices are ‘less than’ or when they take advantage of others to make a profit. Don’t get me wrong.. I DO love my high end items but I go by what speaks to me rather than just what’s expensive and/or elusive. “Community” is about camaraderie, commonality, caring and empathy for others. I have always applauded your effort to build a true community. Thank you!
My pet peeve: ultra-limited drops! I just feel that they’re another form of elitism and a tool for increasing price (through hype) AND feeding/fueling the secondary market’s price-gougers.
    God Bless!

I absolutely agree with everything you said, I’m partial to the following:
    4) Short Product Cycles: You’re so correct about these companies turning and burning. I feel the issue is with the so-called “Knife Designers” that because they collect knives and give opinions on RUclips or Instagram all of a sudden become “Knife Designer’s”. They draw something on paper then send it over to Reate etc and all of a sudden they’re “knife maker/designer” I’ve scaled way back and only purchase from actual makers or semi-custom makers. These so-called fake maskers know who they are, not only this but they’ll have a knife on pre-order sometimes already sold out then show their next model prototype already in their hands before the previous version is released and in the consumers hands! Absolutely ridiculous and I’ve stopped buying from these so-called knife designers ( yes you all know who you are), if you have a product in pre-order or already sold out in pre-order and are showing off new designs, you’re part of this problem! Thanks Taylor for shedding light on this problem!

Absolutely agree 100 percent with EVERYTHING you just said. And I'll add this... these RUclips knife 'designers' are literally helping our enemy by 'collaborating' and pushing the enemies products. Making them wealthier/stronger while making our own country weaker and weaker. Theyve been pretty open about their intentions. Let's hope the enemy isn't using these YT 'designers' and the 'collectors' who buy their products to save up enough to build a nuclear submarine or 2 (likely another 'design' they 'got' from us) to use against us one day!

I absolutely agree with most of these but I really resonated with the unnecessary functions on gear, they add so much BULK to gear when I think most of us are trying to minimize bulk. And also the pace that new knives are coming out. I'm about a year into a serious knife habit and realized that there will ALWAYS be something to want and I basically just have to decide am I buying knives right now or not. There is always be a variant, sprint run or brand new model all the time, seemingly weekly at this point.

Great vid 👏🏻 My number one gripe is crappy pocket clips on knives & flashlights. It’s a crucial part of their overall designs. I won’t buy it to begin with if it has a bad clip & the models I have with poor ones don’t end up getting carried. Sebenzas (best folding knife, locking mechanism & clip ever designed), XM-18s, Microtechs, Benchmade mini-deep clips, Olights, Maratac AA/AAAs, are all awesome!

    • @9thchamber499
      @9thchamber499 2 года назад

I share your gripes and as a Lefty, I am constantly frustrated by companies just pretending we don't exist or thinking we can just learn how to be right handed somehow. I'm all about reversible clips and appreciate the few companies that acknowledge left hand ppl. There are a lot more of us than most ppl think!
Also, similar to pocket clips, I'm constantly let down by fixed blade edc's that come with awful sheaths and limited carry options. There are enough products out there to allow any maker who puts some effort into it, to be able to build a number of awesome carry methods and sheath types. I'm sure the consumers will pay a little extra if your knife comes with a way to make it ambidextrous and maybe a little versatility in carry options. At least just focus on providing a quality sheath, even if it can only be carried 1 way. I happen to love pocket carries. Trying to find a fixed blade I like with a high quality sheath that can fit the Left pocket is about as hard as scoring a GEC on release day! Really making me consider starting my own company. Making high quality sheaths for fixed blades. Who knows, maybe I just found my calling..🤷‍♂️
Right now, it's almost seems as if pocket clips and sheaths are just an after thought to most of these companies. How your knife carries is VERY important!

Gatekeeping is a big one for me. Lately I've seen a lot on reddit where people complain that EDC posts are too much about "pocket jewelry" and not enough "hard used" items. If I just bought a knife, why would I go out and scratch it up, damage the blade, etc, just so that it looks like it's been "used"?
My other gripe is knives that are only sold with the most premium materials, without a more budget friendly option. Not all of us can afford that model with M390, titanium or carbon fiber, etc, but we may be more inclined to buy if there was also a micarta, S30V option, as an example.
Lastly, and this may just be me, but expensive pens with no focus on the type of refills that go into them. They may look cool and all, but if the only refill they can take is some horrible writing, proprietary refill, then there is no point..

Respectfully, I don't think you are understanding the 'use your knives' type argument you're commenting on. I don't think most ppl expect you to go out and 'scratch' your brand new knife up just because. If you don't want to use it, that's your choice.
I believe their argument is against the trend of RUclipsrs who have so many products being thrown at them, it leaves them no time to possibly actually carry/use the knife. And therefore these 'reviewers' cannot really give us an accurate assessment or useful opinion if they haven't had the time to use/test said knife. So they're basically just salesmen (some would say 'hype' men) or 'showcasers' of a TOOL they haven't even put thru its paces.
A LOT of them talk about ergonomics etc. And a lot of us actually need to use our knives. But you can't really get an accurate read on ergo's until you've USED the knife while holding it in hand. Lots of knives feel comfortable... until you go to use it all day at the jobsite.
So you end up buying a knife that someone told you would be great for this or that. What happens when you go and actually use your knife on the job site and the problems begin to surface?
The RUclipsr (who in some cases LITERALLY can't even cut a piece of paper properly) told you it was a great product right? Well why are you now having a bunch of issues with this amazing knife? Because you took advice from someone who was probably sent a product for free and never really tested it to make sure it would hold up to use.
If you wanna 'collect' knives, feel free. But many of us buy them to actually use them. And we're tired of the flood of RUclips creators hyping knives they can't possibly test in a thorough manner. All they're REALLY doing is hyping/selling knives. Mostly for a country that is openly waging economic warfare against us, I might add. That last bit happens to be my personal main concern. Far more important than the sea of fake 'reviewers' on YT. I think ppl need to wake up and realize we are under attack and 'collecting' or 'collaborating' with our sworn enemy is prob not the best idea if you care about the country your kids will have to inherit. Sorry to rant, but some things just need to be said... MORE OFTEN!

@@9thchamber499 nope. I understand what you're saying and I agree, but that's not what I'm referring to. I'm referring to the r/EDC group on reddit, where people post pictures of things that they own, and someone complain that it looks "too pretty" to be something that you actually use, but that you spent a ton of money just to buy gear that you're never going to actually use.

For me, blade play and off centered blades only matter once you get into CRK Hinderer price territory. I just don’t think that a Spyderco PM2, or similar models, are made to tolerances that warrant having the expectation of perfect centering or zero play. I know guys will tune them for as long as it takes to achieve perfection but that’s a fools errand imo and the knife will function perfectly either way.

I have 3 edc pouches and the heart of each of them is a standard swiss army knife i didn't spend any money on (1 i got from my grandfather as a kid, 1 from my uncle as a teenager and 1 was issued to me by the army as a young adult). I own all of them for 10+ or even 20+ years. Of course there are crazy cool knives out there but why exchange something that does the job very well? Apart from the swiss army knives everything is in constant change (was a lumberjack, now i'm a care worker. Very different edc needs) but it doesn't cost much in general if you pack stuff you actually use on a daily basis instead of worst case prepping (nothin wrong with that of course).

My Protech Arcform Slimfoot auto has 2 different hardwares, hex screws on the body and pivot, and Star bits for the clip, which also is another thing you had mentioned, my clip is constantly bending just from being out in the pocket and taken out. Idk if I got a bad clip or what.

I went for some new stuff. but focus on a certain type. for example, I value sharpness these days and my gerber compact utility knife was fantastic but a bit small on blade. and I stumbled on the #60 scalpel. and found a cheap folding frame lock to fit it. so now I am fine with what I got. I don't use any of my knives as a pry bar so sturdiness isn't much an issue

Steinhart is ok in my opinion. They only copy older designs or discontinued designs. And they do have their own case shape. They don’t use the oyster case.

I agree with everything that I've experienced. blade play when closed sounds awful. I'm also vehemently against gatekeeping. but i have to admit, i'm one of those dudes in your discord talking trash on bm. and it has nothing to do with the price point of the knife. ✌️💚

I just had to replace the clip on my O light S2r Baton II because I lost it somewhere. It wouldn't be a big deal except for it's one of the limited edition Ti model. It was surprisingly easy to find but that may not always be the case.

I appreciate your comments on Gatekeeping. I can't stand it either.
Sadly I ran into it on your Discord myself. Was looking for some advice on a knife purchase, the most expensive one I'd ever considered buying. And was more or less told it was a trash choice that was only worth smashing up.
I wasn't even there asking for advice on what knife to get, just advice on changing the scales to personalize it, and someone felt the need to tell me my choice was bad.
I'm glad to hear that sort of thing bothers you as well.

The key fob on my Jeep is kind of huge, but at least it never has to leave my pocket. I have the hands free door locks. Soon as my hand touches the handle it unlocks, and a button press on the handle locks it. So I don't mind as much. A company requiring their own tool to service a knife is just asinine. Make it Torx or hex and make all the screws the same.

Car keys are my nemesis! I have a high budget, but I can’t see paying $150+ for a knife or flashlight. I’m retired military and work hard and play hard. Just can’t see paying up for those items. I do carry a lot of stuff including a gun. I don’t buy cheap, but don’t buy just for a name. Had 3 Kimber’s and will never buy another. All 3 went back to the factory multiple times and still had reliability problems.

You mentioned my #1 pet peeve which is the fad of companies releasing product after product. Usually the knives aren't even much different than the the million others they've released.
The worst part is it happens in just about EVERY industry. It's our biggest enemy manipulating the masses by tossing a brand new version to the RUclipsrs and most youtubers need content to make that $, so they gladly play along and hype the product. And let's not fail to mention the newer RUclipsr fad of 'collaborating' with the enemy on 'designing' their own products. Meanwhile noone is paying attention to the fact that we are literally helping our enemy destroy ourselves.
There are some great Patriots out there who are standing up and using their platform for good and I applaud them. Greg Medford gets attacked constantly by these ppl that just don't get it. And there are a VERY small handful of RUclipsrs who refuse to sell out. It's a sad day when just standing up and voicing your concern for this great country means mass attack from 'the mob'.
I often joke (but I'm actually very serious) that our enemy is saving all the profit from the 'knife collectors' to build a nuclear submarine. Let's hope they don't decide to use it against us one day! They've been pretty open about their plans/intentions, so I for 1 will definitely NOT be surprised when it happens.... unfortunately.
I try not to bash ppl. Mostly bc I understand how hard it is to even find a quality affordable knife made in the US anymore. And I understand that most ppl are just trying to get by and aren't really focused on the big picture. But I sure hope my fellow Americans wake up soon. Because sometimes our future looks VERY dark from where I stand. Hoping the LIGHT starts shining SQQN! 🤞
I remain confident however that this will change. One day everything's going to flip and ppl are going to change their position on this issue. Unfortunately, it's going to be bc we as country learn a very valuable lesson the hard way. I will have a good memory tho, best believe that.
Our enemy has finally gotten very good at 'reproducing' knives and I often hear ppl say we are in the golden age of the knife industry. I strongly disagree. Wait until you see what happens when the world finally wakes up and manufacturing returns to this country. BIGGER and BETTER than EVER before. It WILL happen!
Oh, and resellers are a close 2nd pet peeve of mine. One of the worst examples I can think of is what goes on with GEC. These things sell out in SECONDS. It's almost like you gotta know someone in order to even be able to purchase one from the OG release. Go on Ebay and your going to pay a RIDICULOUS markup to the guy who somehow manages to snag a bunch of them every time smh. It's almost like you hit the lotto if you're able to get 1 in cart and check out before they're gone. I've gotten lucky just 1 time so far lmao.

My protec tr-5 does this. Not only do they use torx and Allen but they are very small. T6 for the pocket clip I'm not even sure what size for the Allen body screws and then a different size pivot screw which was really frustrating and then on the inside you need a number 0 Phillips for button lock lock. Still one of my absolute favorite knives though. I actually have the first production number 43 out of 400 which to me is pretty cool.

I actually need the bottle opener in the Philippines. my first trip I didn't know that they didn't have twist tops and bled all over. All of my knives have a good pocket clip, and the best key ring that I have found is a victorinox. I am in a wheelchair, so I am always worried about if something falling out of my pockets, so I keep everything attached to myself. Even my wallets are trifold bikers wallets with a chain. Lol, belt pouch for my zippo, and it's a loss proof that I also use the victorinox keychain. Even the zippo refill canister. All things that I use in the Philippines, and everything attaches nicely or has a pocket.

I think short product cycles and fast fashion type situations come from high price, limited runs and exotic materials (TiMascus, Zirc etc) that balloon up the price and desire for the product. People that wouldn't even be into it in the first place. They buy, take a neat Instagram photo and sell on so they can afford the next hot thing. very similar phenomenon in people that are into sneakers/basketball shoes.

The snobbery thing is present in all communities, and luckily it's small and kind of frowned on, but it still happens. I shoot airguns, and you get people disparaging budget guns, but they forget some of us like to have fun, ratther than spend our way out of our insecurities. Even if you do drop a fair wedge on a quality rifle (and I have a Weihrauch HW97KT) some wise ass will tell you you should have bought a TX200. On EDC snobbery, well, EDC is an interest of mine, but it's a casual interest. My dogs come first (although I have put together a dog bag, full of outdoor and dog related EDC items I take on walks). Rather than spend a lot on one item, I like ot have lots of gear in various places, so in my laptop bag, my dog bag, my car, my home office, so I go wide instead of expensive.

First off looking pretty jacked bro! I've been watching your video's the past two year's, I don't believe I've commented before, well......maybe once or twice whilst I've had a few beers, but I really enjoy your show, I stumbled across it during lock down. Never fully realised it, but I've always been an edc'er so to say, however you have helped me to refine my carry. I must admit I'm a bit of a fan boy for a deal, as time's are hard blah blah blah I often tend to buy gear from Amazon UK as I live in Scotland and we have strict laws on knife carry plus nappies ain't cheap lol so all my stuff is budget Amazon purchase's - spyderco grasshopper £19 on Amazon (when I bought it) swiss army knife farmer alox £23 (when I bought it) olight i3t EOS £13 when I bought it, along with a chrome fisher space pen £25 (I splurged) these products all fit into my daily life now, and for that I thank you, yeah they ain't the best of the best but it's what fits into my budget and what works and to be honest yeah I wish I could afford better gear, maybe one day, but I use my stuff daily and they have lasted well, gem's in my opinion and worth carrying for the average man 💪🏼 cheers
