G Mixolydian contains the same NOTES as the C Major scale (C Ionian).. But it's called G Mixolydian because it's based around the note G - meaning the new ROOT note is G. I hope this helps..
A true master can explain complex things simply. Makes perfect sense, thank you.
I love your backing tracks - especially these modal examples. Whenever I kinda' forget "feel" of the 6 diatonic modes beyond major and minor, all I have to do is dial up your fantastic, simple and inspiring backing tracks to refresh my memory. They are truly a gift to all aspiring musicians. THANK YOU!
Thank you. Actually that lick is more or less exactly the lick I show in Nugget #14.. I've put a link to it in the info now :) Enjoy!
These are great gifts for music makers. Thanks and thanks again.
+Alan McCormick Thank YOU! Enjoy :)
I was in the minor pentatonic rut. Here I am learning the modes along with your tracks and it feels like an infinite amount of possibilities just opened up to me. Thank you so much.
This track ideal for practicing Elliot Randall's leads in Reelin' In The Years, at a slower pace.
been using these jam tracks now for longtemps and just keep discovering new things. sure has improved my life in unforseen ways. onward!
soooo great to hear!!! thanks for sharing that :)
Hi, as a general rule of thumb you'd use mixolydian for Dominant chords (like G7 and C7 for example) - but it depends what 'function' the chord has in the chord progression.. I, IV, V etc... hope that helps!
Here's to jamming to this track in 2022!!!! I come back here, year after year for reaching new levels. It's so fun to bounce ideas off of these modal jam tracks, thanks!!!! ;-)
True that! And try singing a phrase - then playing it... singin/playin - singin/playin....
Hey, this really sound like the Grateful Dead, the kind of groove that delighted Jerry. Thanks Brother.
This is definitely the BEST channel to play backing tracks to. Great job man!! :) :) QuistJam
G Major Pentatonic (E Minor Penta) + C Major (A minor) + F Major Penta (D minor Penta).....At least 3 ways to improvise over a Mixo...learning sooooo much from your jam tracks....thx Quist!!!
Awesome work dude. Your backing tracks are really helping me improve my improv and modal use. This from a guy who's been playing for nearly 40 years. Most appreciated!
My friend, you have no idea how your work is important and fun to me! I'm alone here where I live when it comes to improvisation and all this material has helped me a lot in my jazz and rock studies! Thanks a lot!
Cheers from Brazil!
Just another rainbow by liam gallagher brought me here. Trying to work out the key and such. Love this groove
Btw for those starting out with modal stuff. G mixolydian is (shape wise) identical to A minor. So you can look at your guitar as if you were playing in A minor. However remember that A isnt your resolve note anymore, G is, so try and finish your phrases with a G instead
Just had my best jam to this track. Thank you!
Thanks! So goovy and cool that made believe I am soloist in a concert.
Best tracks on youtube without a doubt.
Good to learn all the modes of the major scale,so you can see how and where to apply each one in the way which you like.
So much fun to rip over! Switching my fingering patterns from a G mixolydian scale to +2 octave runs in C major in single bar form and double bar form patterns on the neck and having fun with A minor patterns as well! Thanks for posting these great Modal Grooves!!
damn quist you never want me to get my homework done. great backing track
Harmonica madness
Young guitar players. Listen to that comment. This man knows what he's talking about. Just like you can't write beautiful prose without mastering a language, you can't write beautiful music without mastering your theory. Mastering an instrument is a slow, literally lifelong process. There is no quick or easy way.
I like mixing this one up with the minor scale- really groovy sounding.
im in love with this backing track
These are excellent 👌 many thanks.
G Mixolydian is the same as C Major Scale and also the A Aeolian scale- the difference is the root note as QuisTV correctly said. It contains the notes A, B, C, D, E, F and G. The notes fall into different positions on a guitar neck, so G Mixolydian played at the 5th fret will appear to be A Aeolian, but if you play a G first, or have a backing track in the key of G, you'll be classed as playing the G Mixolydian rather than the A Aeolian :)
I guess maybe the easiest way to approach this is to play your familiar C scale pattern, but start or center around the G notes. G is the fifth note in the C scale, that's what we care about since Mixolydian is the fifth mode. The one chord in G Mixolydian (G7) is the fifth chord in the C major progression and so on from there, 2 is 6, 3 is 7, 4 is back to the 1 or C. Yay! Now, go get your Grateful Dead on.
Oh my god. This is awesome to jam to.
In my ears, the best scales to use here are E minor pentatonic, A minor pentatonic, and G Blues (sparingly on that last one). I love this track.
nice work! the best backing trax on the web!
thank you QuistJam your tracks are truly Jamming Tracks!
+Luis Marquez enjoy :) :)
Seriously, great work on all of these tracks! Got hours and hours of play on em
+Xen8 awesome!!!
I play A minor (A Aeolian) but start or end my lines other than A. This works for any progression that moves DOWN Maj to Maj.
So...say you have a progression that moves from B Major to A major...Count one up from B.. gives you C# Aeolian.
A Maj to G Maj...count up 1 from A = B Aeolian. The Aeolian Mode is just what I call the minor scale or minor pentatonic.
Hope this tip helps friends :)
Hope I dont confuse anyone..you will still be playing in Mixolydian mode...this just helps me find right scales quickly by referencing to the all familiar pentatonic scale.
Loving the sound of the highs
magicman93 :) :)
Thanks for these tracks man! I love having the chance to practice my modes in such a convenient way. You da best! Stay awesome.
Love all your tracks- thank you so much.
Francois DuJour Thank YOU!
Thank you! Great help.
You can play the A pentatonics and the A aeolian scales over this BTW!
Of course. G Mixolydian notes same as C Major scale notes, C Major scale = A minor scale (Pentatonic)
Fire fire on the mountain!
@andiluvius thanks :) Loads more on the way...
Excellent... that's what I used to practice my 5 positions scales! thanks a lot!
VERY GOOD!
Amazing!!!!!!!!!! I love mixolydian mode and your

Just bought it, thanx for great trax, man!! :-)
wow this sounds really cool!
the chords are in the video description... enjoy :)
awesome
I just realized the use of the IIIrd minor pentatonic (Emin) in the mixolydian scale!! D: (Big discovery for me)
Marck Villegas Awesome!
Hi - no, it's an F triad (F A C) with a G note in the bass.. hope that helps
G Mixolydian is really C Major, so jam in C major but focus on the G B and D notes (AKA the 2nd, 5th, and 7th of the C Major scale).
Wow loved this track, mate I'll use this for one jam video on YT ok.. All credits will be given to you... 🙏
Thank you so much! Great job !
Thank YOU. Happy jamming
Comer gotta go!!!
Nice
Just look at the harmonized scale of C major. Play anything inside, and out when you feel like it :-)
Francois DuJour explainme this please. im interested in play in and out side but ir dont no how
Lucas Cairo I am no expert, by any means, but you can try "playing outside" by: playing some familiar licks in a different key signature, using passing tones (chromatic notes) between your lines, try experimenting with melodic minor and whole tone stuff. QuistJam is sooo awesome at this kind of playing and can offer way more theory and ideas than me. Thanks for asking
Mixo-lovin this. =)
Hey man thanks a lot for the backing tracks. It really helps my impro, finding some new colors to play and feel, learning the guitar neck too ! It's really usefull for a dude like me going in Jazz for studies. Nice colors by the way when you play at the begining of your videos ; ) (1 2 3 4 lol ) ------> funny stuff
Thanks!
J'adore !
sound advice mr! Cheers :)
thank you these are great :D
Sweet!
Its called G Mixolydian so you dont get confused, its the 5th mode in the key of C...great backing track!
Another name for G Mixo is Cmajor or Aminor or F Lydian or... well you get the idea.
Hey there!
Really enjoying all of your jam tracks for the modes. definitely the best on youtube.
I was wondering whether i could use it to jam over and make a video? Id be grateful if you allowed it!
Thanks again for the epic tracks! cheers XD
Can anyone explain to me why lowering the 7th note of the G major scale sounds good with these chords? Why these particular chords?
Because G Mixolydian mode contains F rather than F sharp. the chords are designed to fit G mixolydian not G Major. G (GBD) and F/G ( GFAC). over the two chords no sharps or flats. G mixolydian is a mode of C Major (no sharps or flats) so you just play C Major notes but make the G your starting and finishing note for most of the licks, then try B and D for landing notes next then F but keep coming back to the G for resolution. Then try some chromatic passing tones. These Jam tracks are great for learning the notes of the fretboard - find every G on the fertboard whilst jamming, then every B etc as before.
Genial, gracias
+Rafael Velasco happy jamming!
jam jam jam
YES YES YES

too beautiful to play the guitar:p
Is G Mixolydian the same as playing the A minor scale?
^^ play Cmajor with it, think emphasis guys
one question (please correct me if im wrong because im just learning it) so...what you call g mixolydian, isn't that the mixolydian mode of c major and not g mixolydian? Thanks and Greets
Can I use C major pentatonic and G major pentatonic?
Any way you can transcribe that little lick you play at the beginning of the track? Btw, big fan of what your all about, you don't have to release your backing tracks to the public but yet you share with us these great tools for improving as musicians. Thanks!
What is the difference between g mixolydian and c major scale?
great man what gear do you use? thx for all the great work!
it's safe to say i fucking love this!
He doesn't play any (b)7s. He is playing triads, alternating G major (= G B D) with F major, in which he replaces the root (= F) with G (= G A C). If you play the notes of C major over these chords, you are *implying* that the G chord is a dominant 7th chord and *implying* that the F chord is a major 7th chord. Playing C major over the G chord = G mixolydian. Playing C major over the F chord = F lydian.
(Please note that the note C is an "avoid note" (passing note, actually) in G mixolydian, so you should be careful with it. For instance, try not to end your lines on C.)
the c note sounds totally fine ringing out over the second chord if you play in a mixolydian context. I use it for extra groovage. youre talking bollocks
mashroom1993
No, you just can't read very well. The second chord is an F chord. If you play the notes of C major over the F chord you are in fact playing F *lydian*, not G mixolydian. The lydian scale does not have any avoid notes.
Guy Thoonen
True, if I choose the slash chord as my root,
but if I choose to take it as a mixolydian chord progression with G as my I and F/G as my VII, like I did, its mixolydian and ending my line with the subdominant sounds just fine.
+Jon Hendrix And that's not what I said. I said " playing *the notes* of C major", not "playing C major". The tonal center has indeed been shifted. Also, there are many people who don't think the mixolydian avoid note sounds dissonant (including Pat Metheny). Everyone can do as he/she pleases with it, that's the nice thing about music. And "avoid note" is such a harsh term, while it simply implies that it's "generally" not THE greatest idea to end a phrase on this note (especially on a downbeat).
I can play the (natural) minor and major scale. Now I am learning the dorian en Mixolydian mode (for playing blues). But still my solo's sound like scales, really frustrating... I hope your advice will work!
Hey Man, Try working in your D dorian as it has the same notes as C maj, or E phrygian.....You will see how they all connect to each other...!!
so play G major for the G chord and then G mixolydian for the F chord? i thought that sounded pretty on point (im new to this stuff)
Muito bommmm...
When you say F/G is it the same as saying G7?
Guitar players I have a question So if I am playing to a Mixolydian backing track should I know the theory behind what note sound best over what chord or would you say most people just plug in the mixolydian and play. Mixolydian is just an example.
jesse durrwachter I think it's important to know what the target notes are. For Mixolydian I target the Maj3 and the b7 and it really brings out the color of the mode against the track and even solo without the track.
Can you answer a question of mine
jesse durrwachter I will try
Can I only mix minor pentatonic on certain major progression or should I just use my ear to decide when is best
And is it ever done over a minor progression
What chords is he playing? I hear major 7s but I'm just guessing
+Kathrine Medeiros Chords in the description.. but yes, I'm adding an E (12th fret 1st string) to the F/G chords, which makes it Fmaj7/G you are right!
Eric Johnson and Oz noy jam!
