Although it is wrong that they were attacked, young Sliwa was trying to play hero. Never announce to criminals that you are going to call police, just do it. Also young Sliwa pursued and confronted the criminals, making himself and Paterson a target. Not very smart. He and Paterson could have lost their lives because of his poor judgment.

If I was walking down the street and saw someone pulling down the fire escape; my first intuition wouldn't be that they were doing something wrong. And, I sure wouldn't be "threatening" to call the police on anyone.
That's when he crossed the line. It's worse than saying, "I'll get my brothers to get at you." The whole country knows about the police and darker people's relations. But, I guess a certain demographic of people need these type of stories to boost their ego and give some kind of rationality to their hate and foolish behaviors. Sounds to me like the people involved were likely residents of the apartment . Assuming that those on the fire escape are committing a crime, is likely something to anger people. Vigilantes need to stay out of it. The woman with a purse, a drink in hand, is not doing burglaries . And they are at the location still. More to this, the best thing if you find it suspicious is to call the police, let them get there and investigate.
Crime has been dropping for the last 6 months. Incidents like this are an outlier not the norm.
