    Zahn had a stroke of genius when he decided to only give Grand Admiral Thrawn the remnants of Death Squadron and a bunch of escort ships to work with for the Thrawn trilogy. The ships have names, they have captains, they feel like huge important and individual ships, unlike in so many other stories. There is a reason to why the fans latched on to The Chimera as a cool and amazing ship, it has a history to it.
    The New Republic is established, they have a navy large enough to properly contend with the Empire and yet... people are utterly terrified the moment an Imperial Star Destroyer appears, and it is extremely rare for one to actually be destroyed. They are too large, too powerful, too sturdy.

    I love that the ISD IIs are like analogous to real world interwar Battleship designs - great ships but for the wrong war.
    Having the wall of lower calibur and distributed casemated laser cannon and turbo laser batteries made sense to punch through swarms of low end CIS ships of the line, but clearly lacked the true dual-purpose nature to make them effective against long range strike craft the Rebels would achieve most of their victories with.

    • @alexanerose4820
      @alexanerose4820 4 года назад +9

      Tie defenders and more laser cannons would've solved that problem. Though we have to remember more Rebel ships fell to the ISD then the other way around and only truly whittled down in legs from other ISD's and New Republic ships

    • @dylandarnell3657
      @dylandarnell3657 3 года назад +7

      @@alexanerose4820 The comparison gets a bit wonky, because most of the on-screen ship-to-ship fights in Star Wars happen at _much_ closer ranges than most historical naval battles - at least the ones that involved armored ships with internal motive power and turret-mounted guns, which Star Destroyers and other Star Wars capital ships are clearly intended to emulate (rather than, say, ram-armed triremes or sailing ships of the line). The last generation of battleships (e.g. the _Iowa_-class) were intended to engage targets from over the horizon. The only battleship fights I can think of that happened at the kind of ranges we see in Star Wars would be the night actions at Guadalcanal, or certain parts of Jutland - situations where bad visibility or intelligence brought both sides much closer than planned - and even those don't come close to the traffic jam at Endor.

      The reason Spacedock is saying they dont, despite official lore showing otherwise, is because hes using the rpg game mechanics as the only source. Thrawn was perhaps the best at evaluating the ISD. He believed it was a solid design. The Death Star was never needed. If star systems spun out of control, just build more ISDs. His thoughts on the weakness of the ship were its starfighters. He came up with a solution to that problem as well. If only they listened to him and let him manufacture the TIE Defender in mass. The empire would have been truly invincible.

    • @khadenallast4495
      @khadenallast4495 4 года назад +1

      Unpopular opinion: The TIE Defender was an over-engineered piece of garbage. We see regular TIEs have no problems taking out X-wings in Ep4, and TIE Interceptors do a good job in Ep6 as well. Slap some light shielding on them just so they don't get taken out by a random piece of debris or a micro-asteroid, and they're good to go in terms of what the Empire already had. If Thrawn wanted to aid the Empire with a fighter, he would have made it a two-person fighter with a rear gunner. He also would have redesigned it to make it SMALLER so more of them could fit in a hangar. Have a single wing in-line with the cockpit and have tilt wings that fold down to not only make the craft smaller but also act as landing gear.
      Of course in reality the fact that a ship like the Falcon exists in Star Wars renders fighters of any kind moot. It's roughly as fast and agile as they are, its shields are able to soak multiple direct hits, its hull was even able to survive an unshielded glancing blow from a First Order TIE in Ep7 (during the escape from Jakku), it has a complete 360 degree field of fire offering no advancing craft a safe attack vector, and it has munitions powerful enough to take out other ships (concussion missiles). Militarize it by getting rid of the dead space (things like the cargo and smuggling compartments, crew quarters, and so on), toning down its hyperdrive to a more reasonable level, etc, and you have yourself something that can take on multiple fighters simultaneously and win, while relying on its ordnance to engage other ships, and should by this point be small enough to easily fit several in a hangar (especially of a 1.6km long ship!). A larger version, keeping some of the crew comforts and cargo space, could even be used for independent assignments, carrying out the day-to-day tasks of the Empire (dealing with pirates and smugglers and whatnot) in far off systems and such. They'd certainly do better than a gozanti cruiser with a couple TIEs latched on.

      CLash A single Borg cube trying to take on the entire Imperial Navy wouldn’t stand a chance. One ISD? Maybe it could take that. Three, four, five or more ISDs? I highly doubt it. And the DS-1 Battle Station? Not a chance. The raw firepower advantage held by the Empire, combined with the inability to beam drones aboard anything without first blasting the shields down, gives the Borg one hell of a mountain to climb.

    • @kevingriffith6011
      @kevingriffith6011 4 года назад +2

      @@crabbyguy2737 It also depends on how borg adaptive shielding works. As presented in Star Trek, the empire would need to eliminate the cube *very* quickly because their weapons arrays are relatively simplistic compared to Star Trek's. (Not saying they aren't as powerful, just that they do one thing very well). As presented in the show, adaptive shields are essentially "god mode" against anything that they've adapted to, so once turbolasers and ion cannons have been adapted to then the empire will be very slim on options. The federation had to leverage their highly variable equipment, both in their phaser arrays and also their magic plot disk I mean deflector array in order to stand a chance... and as far as I understand, turbolasers really only have one setting.
      Now if adaptive shielding is just "take 1% damage" rather than "take 0 damage", then I 100% believe that the empire would wreck a cube.

    The Sojourn? I forgotten about that project with the great Voice of The Institute Larissa Thompson. They might be using an backup right now but she will always be the Voice of The Institute to me. And it should be a fun ride to she how the story of the Sojourn goes. 1 There seems to be a blind spot behind the thrusters you could park a frigate in.
    2 The position and layout of the landing bays look like it would be awkward to deploy or retrieve fighters during battle.

I went through hell for a while there and didn't come up for air until just a couple of months ago. LONG (and painful) story. Medical and legal stuff, so put 2 and 2 together. Came out the better for it in one respect, but still in VERY rough shape physically. Somehow through it all I thought I backed it. In my defense I had a lot going on, though. :/ Oh, well. I still want to bet that a fully equipped Venator would win against a fully equipped Imperial II. Of course not in point blank slugging but at a distance, the Venator has a gigantic advantage. A functional point defense grid, like 7-8 times the number of fighters/bombers, oh and it's way nimbler. The Venator would have no trouble keeping out of the effective firing range of the Imperial II and constantly send bomber wave after bomber wave. It's like a bear trying to fight a wasp nest that has legs and is faster than the bear.
