First off, it is hard to tell who has been the best-selling instrumental group of all time. After a fair amount of research, resulting in papers presented at the University of Manchester and the University of Kent for the British Association of American Studies, I would have to say that it was probably Glenn Miller--who, after all, had two albums go platinum fifty-four years after his death. Having said that, the Ventures released over 200 albums--and they sold well enough that they were able to keep finding record companies to distribute them. In reality, their live concerts only give a hint of how good they were. Many of their originals show a real sophistication--Hokkaido Skies & Ginza Lights, for instance, illustrate ballad skills at the Charlie Christian level. Their use of fuzz, reverb, flanging, and such anticipated other guitarists by years.
