  • In April 1901, the camera crew of Mitchell and Kenyon decided to capture the bustling activity of Jamaica Street, which was then and remains today one of Glasgow's busiest thoroughfares. At the time, it was the hub of the city's commercial and cultural activities, with its numerous shops, theatres, and pubs. The footage was distributed by the showman AD Thomas, who claimed that around 8,000 people viewed it at the city's Grand Circus.
The film provides a glimpse of the city in the Victorian era, a time of rapid change and growth. The clip showcases the bustling street life, which was characterized by horse-drawn carriages, buses and carts. These modes of transport, which dominated the city's landscape for centuries, would soon be replaced by electric trams. The footage depicts the busy street scene, with the traffic moving in an orderly fashion, providing a snapshot of Glasgow life at the turn of the 20th century.
During the Victorian period, Glasgow experienced significant economic growth, as the city became a hub of industry and trade. Glasgow's rapid expansion during the 19th century was fueled by the Industrial Revolution, which saw the growth of industries such as shipbuilding, textiles and engineering. As a result, the city became a magnet for people seeking work, and the population soared. This led to the development of new neighbourhoods and a significant expansion of the city's infrastructure, including the construction of new roads, bridges and buildings.
However, this growth was not without its challenges. The rapid expansion of the city led to significant overcrowding, poor living conditions and a rise in poverty. The city's poor sanitation and hygiene conditions also led to the spread of diseases such as cholera and typhus, which took a heavy toll on the population.
Despite these challenges, Glasgow continued to grow and evolve, with the Victorian era marking a significant period of transformation for the city. The growth of the city's economy and infrastructure during this period laid the foundations for Glasgow's future success as a centre of industry, culture and innovation.
As you can imagine the original film source was of a rough quality. Lots of scratches and other blemishes have been left untouched, the scenes are too busy to be able to separate these from the original image. Sound has been added, something much more modern than an Edwardian ditty. :)

Amazing clarity. I wonder what the military procession was? Something to do with the Boer War perhaps.
