    I am a 17 plus year knitter. I am a level 2 craft yarn council certified knitting instructor and I am working on my master knitter certification. First let me say that you would have an easier time knitting with cables needles. If you ever want to learn more about knitting, swatching to figure out the number of stitches I am happy to teach you. But I am really proud of you for giving this a go. It is hard. Many knitters struggle with the purl stitch. Many knitters never knit a sweater.The way you added the new color is not the normal way to add a new color. But it is the same way I use to do it too. You can put knit in time out and she will eventually behave. You did really good.

    Few things:
    -yarn labels are your best friend!
    -you used stockinette stitch (1 row knit, 1 row purl)
    -when doing stockinette stitch, you are going to knit the right side (the side with the v’s) and purl into the rows of the wrong side with the purl bumps on them
    -the hole/mistake looks like an accidental yarn over
    -doing sleeves on circular needles is so much easier because you can avoid all the seaming and weaving.
    You did so good for this being your first time!

      I only have ever knitted scarves and a few beanies, but sweaters? That's scary to me. I've attempted to create a sweater dress a few times, but had to give up since I always messed up with the pattern (plus the pattern wasn't the easiest to follow for a beginner either). This gives me hope that I will get better at it, because I don't wanna give up trying to create clothes.
      And when that happens, I'll attempt learning crochet and then to actually sew (which hasn't gone really well do far, lol)

    I use to knit as you do, from the ‘seat of my pants’ 😂 but I have to tell you one of the most wonderful gifts I gave myself was to find a great knitter who was willing to teach me how to do it properly. The best thing I learned was how to ‘read’ my knitting and now I’m able to correct my errors as I go.
    I feel like I need a book to write the things you have encouraged me to do 🤗. In fact as I write this I am sewing my about my 25th bucket hat

    Fun tip for when you’re learning new techniques! There’s something called a life line where you weave in scrap yarn or thread into your stitches so if you mess up and have to unravel you don’t risk dropping stitches. There are some good RUclips videos showing how to do it :) it’s saved me a lot of time 😅

    Totally recognise that crochet mentality, just figure it out as you go, I still refuse to work from a pattern.
    A few tips from a fellow intuitive knitter:
    * Gauge so you know how much to cast on, after that you can sort of freestyle it. A good start is half the battle won.
    * Look into the Italian cast on for ribbing.
    * If you knit your ribbing on a smaller needle, also knit the first 1 or 2 rows after the rib on the small needle before switching, makes the transition look nicer.
    * Keep your crochet hook close to fix any dropped stitches or other mistakes, a lot less time consuming than unraveling all the rows.
    * Practice on different increase and decrease techniques so you can shape your parts, makes it a bit more like drafting a pattern as you would in sewing.

  • @jenndoesstuff
    @jenndoesstuff Год назад +8

    For the ribbing, it's a lot easier to do it in 2 or 3 pattern (so k3, p3 or k4, p4 or whatever) than it is to do k1, p1 because the emergent pattern is much easier to see when it's larger. You won't have to visually remember which is which, you'll be able to just see which is the knit or purl section that way. I love the color combo you chose, it's surprisingly cute.

  • @bgummeson
    @bgummeson 3 года назад +31

    Well done! That was a great strategy to turn it upside down to achieve ribbing at the bottom. I am a long time knitter but have never finished a sweater. You’ve inspired me to go for it! I reeeeally recommend circular needles if you want to knit again, you can get sets of interchangeable ones so that you have every size you need! Makes sleeves so easy as you can push the stitches back onto the cable and switch out your needle size once you’ve done the ribbing! Also definitely a good call to use chunky yarn for your first- I’ve just knit a jumper using DK and it took 3 weeks (and I’m pretty fast!) x

    • @scifigrl23
      @scifigrl23 3 года назад +1

    Oh wow, the result is so cute!🌸🤠 But omg you are making it way harder then it has to be - I mean - if you start using your needle to actually pick up the yarn instead of using your whole hand for every little stitch you'll safe so much time and effort! Also I know somebody else commented this but you actually don't have to redo all your work to fix a single stitch: remove the stitch from the needle, gently peel the work down to where you want to alter it and then with a crochet hook you can put the stitches back together

    Crochet hooks are your best friend when knitting, just so anyone knows. Helps a lot when when you mess up and have to redo a row instead of using your fingers to pick up the stitches from the previous row

    You did such a great job and I love how you just jump in and do it! You should look into circular needles and continental knitting! Keep creating!

    Jenna's purl of wisdom to untangle the yarn before putting the needle through the loop left me in stitches.

    You can add a ribbing after. As well as leaving lifelines which are strings strung in the row to help when u have to rip out rows

  • @creativemommaof3241
    @creativemommaof3241 3 года назад +6

    to make your cast on row not so tight, you can hold both needles together and cast on both needles and that will give you a much looser cast on row
