      The DB color manga has her hair blue for the first two or three chapters, because that's actually how Toriyama colored it at first. Afterwards, her hair is purple until the end. The colored manga uses Toriyama's color schemes instead of the anime.
      The colored Dragon Ball Super manga doesn't do use Toriyama's colors tho. Bulma has blue hair, Piccolo has blue belt, etc.

    Toriyama even used the fact that it was a black and white manga for a dramatic reveal. In the Freeza arc when Goku shows up to fight final form Freeza, he has the generic white aura around him that appears when he's fighting. The afterlife gang is confident that he'll win as long as he uses the Kaio-Ken, only for Kaio to say that he's already been using it. The full color version just had to say "screw it" and make the aura red which ruins the intended surprise.

    I don't mind, but usually I like the full colour adaptations, but some make mistakes like JoJo's full colour has some things in weird colours like in Part 6, the conversation that Dio and Pucci have is meant to take place at night, but the sky is incorrectly coloured a light blue.

    • @theradionicrevival8068

      My fav example of this is actually in Joj!
      What was supposed to be a big reveal of the main villain being right behind the Mc as the big large shocking page turner with dark shadows and jagged hatching in the colored version just became bright saturated colors, normal blue skies and everything.
      The colored ver LOOKED fine; but in context and out of it, it feels WAY less intimidating when it was intended to be horrifying when the blackness of the shadow and the texture of the hatching is completely removed.
      Jojo is one of those manga that actually CAN be pretty hard to read in BW
      And while the colored mangas quality ranges it just fixes one problem and creates another
      A LOT of visual fidelity is lost in the colored version

      The worst part about JoJo’s digital color manga is that the animators adapt the coloring errors into the anime. Examples include Giorno’s thick neck, Lang Rangler’s cloth-colored shoulders, and Jolyne’s shoulder cloth injury.

      The colored manga also feels really drab compared to how Araki uses color in his works. To him, color is an aesthetic tool and not meant to portray what's in reality. The anime pays homage to this in a really cool way when the color becomes very vibrant and abstract during action scenes.

    • @adoniscreed4031
      @adoniscreed4031 13 дней назад

      It being a limitation inherently affects the creative vision. To use an extreme example, a Star Wars theatre production cant exactly recreate Luke destroying the Death Star like in the movie so they would have to get creative with cardboard and ropes to make that scene work. The same goes for mangakas and not being able to use colour. The limitations inform the creative process.

    • @TupocalypseShakur
      @TupocalypseShakur 4 дня назад

      @@adoniscreed4031 that's a ridiculous example, in the books GRRM had the Iron throne have proportions that made it impractical for the show so they used a smaller prop. This was a limitation, not some creative choice.
      How far does that reasoning go? Does the Room having poor acting and writing count as a creative choice and not vanity? Does Mortal Kombat Annihilation have bad choreography because that's what the director wanted and not because the production was rushed and none of the cast practiced? Is Neil Gaiman uncreative because he didn't want an adaptation of the Sandman in the 90s because the technology wasn't good enough?

      This goes for most colored manga but the point is how it adds visual fidelity where there wasn’t before making the image less striking and less important as a result due to the lack of contrast.
      And generally how when it comes to consuming manga, it doesn’t hurt to try to see the series in the way the creator intended for a better/stronger experience, IF you can help it. It’s like settling for “ok” when you can easily have good.
      See it like stretching and cutting footage of older media like the Simpsons or dragonball to fit widescreen. Or interpolating 60fps on old Tom and jerry cartoons to appear modern.

    There is one things that needs to be mentioned.
    Most official manga coloring projects try to emulate the coloring style of the mangaka at the time. This is especially true in series like One Piece. So, while it might not technicannly be what the author did, it's still in the same vain as the author's work and is fairly representative of a hypothetical colored version made by the actual mangaka.

  • @TrueReverse74
    @TrueReverse74 2 месяца назад +11

    I gotta disagree here, maybe that's a you problem, but I don't have issue with adding details to make the color standout. The only thing you said that makes it worse is that it's not colored in by Toriyama, but mangaka have people make backgrounds and ink in the black parts all the time. Them having to add some slight detail so that the picture doesn't look flat is not a big deal. It's still toriyama's artstyle regardless.

    Devil's advocate: I think this is a bit of a snobbish stance on colored manga. A lot of care and detail obviously went into the clothing that had to be redrawn and carefully designed to never betray the art style of the original. Case in point, most people never even noticed until Mark pointed it out.
    You can argue, yes, Toriyama didn't draw that superfluous detail, but Toriyama also had assistants who helped draw detail and backgrounds in the original manga, so it's not the most valid argument.

    • @theradionicrevival8068
      @theradionicrevival8068 Месяц назад +7

      Mark’s point was less that colored manga are bad and people who read it should feel bad
      Just that you should try to give the og be a chance due to getting as close the creators intent as possible and being filled in on certain nuances a colored version misses
      Color can unironically be a massive tone setter
      Some stories just use BW as a crutch and has 0 usage in the story and some stories deliberately take advantage of that. So just slapping colors on them CAN change the vibe of the experience

    I disagree.
    I will always choose to read the colored version over the black and white version, whenever available, which isn't very often. You see, when I read manga in black and white, I almost never take in the art work, because it usually takes a few moments to process what exactly I'm looking at. With it being colored, I have a much easier time at recognizing things immediately, because everything is color coded. So no, I would not consider colored manga to be an "objective downgrade." At the end of the day, you're free to read however you see fit. The main issue is a simple matter of "that's not what the original mangaka intended the art to look like", drawing while knowing that you can only use black and white leads to many different decisions being made while illustrating and you often have to fill out information that would be conveyed thru color in different ways. Adding color to an already finished black and white illustration thus messes with the balance, throwing off composition, overloading information in areas, or ruin the flow.

Printing in color means there are more options and as such there is more detail. Not sure how you can see that as "objectively worse". like do you think Toriyama wouldnt have wanted to print it in color if he had the chance to do that? Also, why stop at just reading in black and white? It was originally printed in Japanese, so just read it in Japanese like it was intended. I can understand wanting to read as the author intended, but it can also depend on the manga itself. For instance, if there are any color pages in a manga’s chapter when it’s published in its respective anthology(Shonen Jump, Shonen Sunday, Shonen Gangan, etc) or its respective apps nowadays, the physical volume releases are likely gonna be released in grayscale when first published, which will muddy the readability just as much, if not more so depending on the amount of colour used for those chapters. It is on a case-by-case basis, however, and some manga are getting new releases with the color pages restored. Personally, I like seeing the color choices made to try and match the original color choices of the author, but I can understand the benefits of reading the material as originally presented.

    Instead of giving them a unique vibrant color pallete like Araki normal does they opted to give most of them a one color airbrushed look with glowing aura effects basically ruining the look of so many stands
    Also espacially starting with Part 7, the color smudges over the detailed renderings of some scenes making them literally lose detail. Also Oyecomova, his makeup makes no sense now. It's supposed to be american flag!!!
    Also no the manga was NOT fan colored. It was done by Shueisha, Part 8 received some fancolouring due to demand and some people just making it themselves, but no the manga was coloured by Shueisha for digital release. Another thing I noticed about the Digital Color versions of Dragon Ball is they use different page dimensions--likely 9:16, to fit on modern monitors, which is a little taller/narrower than the paper used by all the other releases. This is mainly a concern when artists draw "in the margins": Digital Color will chop off panels that stretched all the way to the left or right edge, while it may reveal more of panels that go toward the top or bottom than was intended to be seen. And so we'll be left forever wondering how they might have colored details that only appeared in the left or right margins of other editions!
