The instruction manual does have descriptions, and it also came with a fold-out poster with all the items and also the stats of all the monsters on it. So there will be some spoilers that way, but if you want to check, that's where you'd look. There should be places where you can find scans of the manual online.
Thanks for the tip, Alex! I'll see if I can find scans of the manual online. I start to figure a few of the abbreviations out around episode 4 or 5, but having something to reference would be incredibly helpful.
Glad I could help! I've played this game like, five or six or maybe seven times through? All I know is that it has a certain charm to it and I hope you enjoy it!
You can find a downloadable pdf of this manual on website called Gamesdatabase. Just Google Paladin's Quest manual, and it might be the first result. :)
Thanks so much for the website suggestion, innoutraged! I don't know how I had never heard of GamesDatabase before... the site is chock full of good stuff. :O
This was certainly a learning experience too. I only played this game on emulation so I was astoundingly confused by the naming of items on this game as well when I first played but I'm certain you'll get the hang of it just like I have in due time.
It took me a few episodes, but you're right; the wonky naming system begins to sort of make sense as you progress and put "two and two" together. I think the way everything was listed initially caught me off guard. Did you play the sequel for this, too? I keep seeing that a lot of people like it more. It seems as though there's an English fan-translated rom for it, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. :)
Rabbit Plays Games For real i never knew there was a sequel. I'll definitely look up on it. Paladin's Quest as nice as it is, always got that "one off" game feel from me I would never expect for it to have a sequel. I'll definitely check it out.
Abbreviations were a problem in a few SNES games. I know the first Breath of Fire game truncated a lot of its item names. But descriptions would help out soooo much. I’d guess Learn H would be Learning Hat, since it goes on the head and you find it in your school. :P Using your health to cast spells is interesting. Potentially sets up a risk/reward system, whether it’s better to play offensively or defensively.
As weird as it sounds, the weird abbreviations slowly begin to make sense in this game as you make your way through. Lol, I guess you just have to get into the mindset of the time. xD
Thanks for the recommendation, my friend! I recently read a review about it, and I am hoping to buy myself a PS4 for Christmas this year. I've waited long enough! It's time to treat myself. ;) How are you doing, btw?
Rabbit Plays Games Oh hanging on in there. Oh that would be cool! We can play together! We have a ridiculous heat wave going on in Wales right now, and I don't do so well in the heat. I need to employ a bunch of people to come fan me :-)
Thanks! I start to figure out some of the abbreviations around episode 4 or 5, but I think I'm going to look for scans of the manual or something online, because the lack of clarity is driving me nuts, lol.
What the fuck?! An old man hogging the "attention" of a young girl around Chezni's age? Well...if the girl don't mind then...STOP ME! RABBIT, I NEED GODDAMN HELP! XD

Duke's hair looks like strawberry ice cream, YUM!
Mmmmm, strawberry ice cream is my favorite!

If I had the resources, I'd send a crew your way, my friend.
Rabbit Plays Games hehe thanks. Hope you guys are well x
I can also recommend Ni no Kuni II. Just picked it up last weekend and I love it so far.

LOL, this must be the answer. xD
haha, awesome!
Rabbit, "MAL" is male, "LG" is leg and "BLT" is belt. they really over abbreviated things in those status screens.
