Guessing 1 is bone, 2 is tusq
Thanks for this semi-reboot video. I remember one you did awhile ago comparing these in a guitar. The plastic sounded ok, tusq was quite bright (too much for my taste, at least what was heard on my sound system), and bone sounded full, mellow/rounded and just right.
Kind of like a nice steak. You can pan cook it on the stovetop (plastic: decent, will fill your belly), grill it over charcoal (bone: Supreme Yum! factor) or do sous vide, where there is no variation that my tongue n nose can discern, which gets pretty boring quicklike: tusq. To each their own taste, but my ear likes bone. At least on my Blueridge 5-string banjo that started buzzing on the high D string, and the tech showed how the plastic nut had been cut through by playing and normal tuning tension. Sounded tons better after replacing factory plastic with bone nut. Fuller, richer, better sustain 👍👍

Bone is my go to but even plastic can sound good on the right soundbox.

Randy, just wanted you to know that I bought a knock off tele recently. It needed lots of work like fixing all the sharp fret ends, polishing scratchy frets, install strings trees,, adjust action, intonation and fingerboard staining and rolled edges. I learned a lot of that stuff from watching you over the years. I finally got the nerve to work on my own guitar, lol. Now I won't dare touch my J45, lol. Thanks for all that you share!

I have two guitars with bone saddles and nuts and one with Tusq. Had a plastic saddle long ago when I started playing. Guitars deserve the best. The difference between bone and Tusq? Omg... lol, I can't tell. I'm a pathetic tone deaf guitar player...only when I get the wrong chord. Lol. I know it's a shame...but I always enjoy your fruitful videos.
    Be safe, my friend! 🎶🎶🎶

Randy you're such a loveable goofball sometimes....
Here's my answer --- both are plastic, the table is bone AND Tusq.... Oh, sorry, that was biden-speak.
Seriously, I couldn't tell if you were dropping 2 bones, or 2 Tusqs, or one of each. They 'dance' the same also. But plastic plinks instead of plunks, and doesn't dance.
Players, if you 're going to spend 8 or 10 bucks to replace your plastic saddle on your acoustic with bone, spend the 4 or 5 bucks more and get Tusq. It's man-made to ensure uniform density throughout. I sold off my last guitar in 2014, didn't play a note on any instrument in 10 yrs. June last year decided I had to again. Got a nice Alvie a/e in a hardship sale. Replaced both plastic nut and saddle with bone. Got a 12 string a few months ago. That had Graphtech's 'Nu-Bone' nut and saddle. Talked with a luthier who convinced me to go to Tusq. Went to Tusq saddle on the 12 and also on the Alvie. The sustain is great on both guitars, ( I went to Tusq on the saddles only, left the nuts as they were., bone on the 6, NuBone on the 12. I did also replace the plastic bridge pins in the Alvie6 with bone. That guitar never sounded this good. I paid 140 for it. I wouldn't sell it for less than double that cause that is the minimum i'd had to pay to get something that sounds near as good. If you got a plastic nut, replace that, and bone is fine on the nut, & for bridge pins also. Tusq saddle if you want sustainnnnnnnnnnnn........

Tusq is a man made material, so the density should be controlled and uniform, where bone is a natural material and the density will vary throughout the piece - being nut or saddle, as well as vary from nut to nut or saddle to saddle. It would be nice if you could make a nut out of tusq and one out of bone, as well as saddle and drop them in your Martin to compare tones of the two different materials.😀

You're absolutely correct.. being man made would equate to a dependable uniform response..as tusq is baked under high temperature..you would expect less variables!! However.. I'm in the bone camp!!!!! An organic material..(prefer to synthetic..😁) so every piece sounds different..(like a Martin D18.. They're all made equal, but there's good d18's and GREAT D18'S) I WOULD ALSO ALWAYS OPT FOR UNBLEACHED BONE, NOT BLEACHED..AS IN MY OPINION.. THE BLEACHING PROCESS AFFECTS THE DENSITY, AND THEREFORE TONE OF THE NUT/SADDLE!!!

@@mojo6778 also I feel that slightly more tonal benefits would be gained from the saddle (in terms of material) than the nut!!! And I'm sure the jedi master himself (RANDY) alluded to this on one of his videos.. tusq has it's benefits.. especially if using an under saddle pick up!! 👍

I probably can't tell the difference, but my favorite guitars have had bone... so that's my preference.

Just found this channel tonite, watching another one of Yer vids, believe the song by Buckcherry should clue Ya which one it was.....Crazy Bitch! anyway, I've made & switched nearly all nuts & saddles on mine & other's acoustics, electrics, banjos, ukuleles, ect, from deer antlers, & Your right, you'll find some density/porosity inconsistencies, but You can mostly determine that before starting on one, & always better than what it's replacing, which is plastic!
