This video seems to be entirely focused on Dublin, there are many other regions where many of the points raised aren't an issue. I'm a Dub but 20 years ago I moved to Wexford (amongst many other regional examples), where the cost of living is very reasonable.
The bulk of the higher paying jobs are in Dublin. 20 years ago there was flexibility . We made the point that moving then was less difficult than today. We moved to Dublin 25 years ago. Doubt we could do that now.
@@Kitiwake Not sure what you mean. However upon selling my property in Dublin I have been able to buy a lovely place in Wexford (with a few spare acres) plus two sizeable rental properties in Waterford city centre, with a few bob to spare. Doesn't make sense really, does it ?
My grandparents were from small villages in Kerry and emigrated to the US in the early 1920s. We're planning to move to the Cork City area for retirement, but we're quite aware of the rising nativist sentiment. We have the same situation here in the US on a larger and so far, more violent scale. Things could get much, much worse in Ireland in terms of violence, particularly given their absent and opaque government responses to the immigration issue. I can blend in to society in Ireland more easily, since I look like I could have been born there, but my wife is asian and could face discrimination. We're keeping our eye on the mood on immigration, and so far it doesn't seem to be improving.
I can see your concern. Rural Cork Keryy I wouldn't worry about. In any city in the wrong area you might get attention , but generally with so many different nationalities here now ( we have a lot of Asian nurses) I don't think you need to be worried. Good Luck with the move.. I think you wil like it. Here is Kenmare and Kninsale two really friendly places that you might like. ruclips.net/video/MW7neyc9Smo/видео.html
@@KCCTravel Thanks for the reply and link. We have been traveling around Ireland over the last few years and have always been impressed with how friendly people are everywhere we've gone (even in Dublin!). We can definitely feel a difference in the far West (West Cork, Kerry), where the pace of life seems even more relaxed.
The one conclusive piece of advice in this video is ‘look elswhere.’ There are three reasons NOT to come to Ireland (i) accommodation is almost impossible to find. The homelessness figures quoted in the video are the official figures, which do not include many thousands who are permanently ‘couch surfing’ and cannot register with the local authority because they cannot provide an address!, (ii) should one be so lucky to find a room to rent, it will be very expensive and usually in an overcrowded house, and (iii) the cost of living is absolutely crazy. Another reality not mentioned here is the high volume of Irish people leaving Ireland for the USA, Australia or elsewhere every year. Most leave because of the above reasons. Therefore there is a high likelihood that the time & energy you invest in making friends in Ireland will vanish before your eyes. I do not like saying it, Ireland is lovely and lots of fun for a holiday, but nothing more!
Born and bread Irish, it’s nice to see that the Irish brothers and sisters don’t have to immigrant abroad for work. Last time I worked in Ireland was Christmas 2006. I visit at least twice a year, in 2016 I looked to move back, but the cost of living makes it next to impossible. Secondly is employment, I costed everything, car insurance, private healthcare insurance, etc etc, came up with a figure and put that figure across the table to public service sector. Communication back was a figure we’ll below the cost of living, this seems to be intrenched in Irish mentality, we want you here we just don’t want to pay. Lastly is public infrastructure is poor in Ireland, for a country that is one of the most expensive in the world, wow it really lags behind other countries. England not the U.K. land mass is pretty close in area, Englands population is 40million. It’s should not have a housing problem and easily rectified. Ireland has the opportunity to continue to be a great little country, but it lacks vision, poor infrastructure and over costed, healthcare system that can’t balance the books, energy costs unsustainable, when it could invest in alternative clean energy. When I return home I don’t spend anything in the economy anymore it’s just too expensive. Went to rent a bike in Westport in 2016, was €18 went back last year to do the same cycle with friends €35 per bike, abandoned that idea. Many people I know love Ireland but abandoned holidaying there, just due to sheer cost. I wish Ireland the best will alway have a special place in my heart.
I hear you. Overall planning is poor. It seems in terms of housing that the big rental companies that Noonan brought in in 2013 are more important than the people. but in truth people vote for a government that has made housing a comodidity to be traded instead of a home. They will do that again this time in a few weeks. So nothing will change. Healthcare has always been underfunded relative to the population and that won't change. Energy costs are now double what they were five years ago. We have wind powering over 20% of the supply but still to expensive. Food had doubled in the last two years. Twenty five years ago nearly I moved to live in Dublin. I doubt I could do it now unless in a job paying at least €50K Rents are more than twice what they were in 2016. For a two bed apartment in D3 I paid 700 punts. equivalent to €1000. today you would be lucky to get that for under €2500 . Until people realise that this government is more concerned with builders and property rental companies than it's people nothing will change. But I expect to see FF FG back in power after this election. The budget was a bribe the people operation with hand outs to help cover the costs they created. You took the right decision.
The cost of living is much much higher than the UK and most of Europe. There is a reason anyone living near the border shops in the north. There is no free health care for working people. Expect to be heavily taxed, especially on anything climate related like fuel. Ireland is not a free meal ticket and if you move here pay your way

My husband and I are American and have seriously considered moving there many times. I always dreamt of reapplying for the Irish citizenship my family gave up when immigrating to America. To me it feels like poetic justice to reclaim that back to our family. But with the influx of economic migrants flooding the country I worry we would be viewed as a unwanted invaders as well. That being said, I completely understand why they would feel this way given the current circumstances with housing, jobs, and budgets. Also another factor for us is my husband is IT and I think the biggest hubs for that line of work are Dublin and I much prefer anywhere but there. lol!
We live in Dublin One half Irish one half American. (living here over 30 years) We think if you have Irish ancestry it's worth looking at coming here. but the caveat is unless you have independant means you could not live here unless you are earning in excess of €100K a year. IT is a paying job if in a specialist area. Keep in touch let us know how you get on. Tbh I would n't worry about the imigrants here. We will sort that in time.. As alwaya the Irish government hasnot been the quickest to respond.
No I wouldn't say that. Many countries have a homeless problem, but housing costs and rents are much lower in comparison to Ireland. Berlin for example has much lower rents than Dublin.
thet is not so. Irelnd is an exceptionalcase. I m warning anyone now, Ireland is tough going. There is nowhere affordable to live. If you think you can survive in ireland with nowhere permanent to call home for long, thats up tp you. But "having a job" doesnt solve many problems in Ireland.
You could make this same video about any western country, just change the name but the economic game is exactly the same - flipping houses at inflated prices. Australia has a massive housing and cost of living problem. The dominant economic model of neoliberalusm is the problem.
Agreed. You can see it in America UK Ireland Australia. Homelessness which was never a major problem over my life time has grown out of all proportion. It's a pattern. Ireland is no different. The unrest that we are seeing again is replicated. But the Irish will still vote FF FG . It's ingrained in their DNA at this stage. Unfortunately so far few of the opposition parties are making any great fist of a decent opposition.
That isn't what we said or implied. Emigration has been good for the Irish economy . Job shortages in certain sectors have been filled. as it has been for the USA and other countries.
Best way to get free accommodation, health care and food is to claim asylum - seems to work! There is a lovely part of Ireland that you haven’t covered in the North East of the island. Still affordable and the lowest unemployment rate in the UK. Ireland isn’t full - there is just not enough accommodation and infrastructure to cope with the influx of newcomers. Because Ireland has a small population, the percentage of foreign born inhabitants will continue to grow. The end of the Troubles in Northern Ireland and the buoyant Irish economy means that it’s a great place to live and raise a family - but you are right about the weather!!
You re delusional. You re not arriving in the hope that you ll find an accomodation and be able to easily put down roots. You re already established in Ireland. The weatheris only a concern if you have to sleep outside. Try looking at it as if you just have money but nowhere to live. You ll soon realise that having money is no solution to the problem of no accomodation. How does it look now?
