  • New research by the BBC's Breakfast programme shows a rise in the number of people in England and Wales who are middle-aged or elderly and struggling with eating disorders. The findings suggest that the number of people receiving specialist treatment has increased by almost a third in the past four years.
    The BBC's Jayne McCubbin reports.

      @Amanda Ponder: I know anorexia is an extremely serious disorder that kills, but there are times when I wish I had just a little touch of it. I'm in my early 50s, and my weight is 5 to 10 pounds more than it should be, per my doctor. It hurts my pride, more than anything. I was always thinner than average, until I went through menopause. I love to eat!

    I am almost 20years old.
    I am suffering from Anorexia nervosa for over 4 years since my mom passed away from cancer.
    I became deeply concerned with what I was eating from fear of becoming ill. Instead things took a dark turn. I am now in recovery since I want to be a better big sister amd duaghter for my dad and baby sis. I am doing this recovery on my own. My family doesnt understand what anorexia is since I am the first ever in my family to be caught by this illness. I am trying the best to stay on track but I am having problems. I pray that one day I can be free of this; but for now I will fight on.
    Anorexia does not have an age range or a main cause. It can happen to anyone

    There is little to no support for older people with eating disorders and other chronic mental illnesses. I am 42, and I am totally alone, noone is helping me with my eating disorder or my mental illnesses. The support is all for young people as if we don't matter to society at all.

    I think my aunt has it, she's in her 70's. she always goes for walks and picks at her food and throws most of her meals away. she knows just about everything about nutrition and calories and has lost a good amount of weight yet still views herself as big, even though she was quite skinny to begin with. it's been going on for as long as i can remember (I'm almost 17). I myself have had it for 5 years now and I feel like she blames herself although I don't think there's really anyone to blame. I want to ask her of she has it or ask my uncle but I don't want to upset her. I just want to see her enjoy eating and being in her body. :(

      I’m 47, currently out of remission again, and have had anorexia for 33 years. The most insidious parts of anorexia are more psychological than physical. It has very little to do with how anyone sees me...I don’t want anyone to see me at all. I pray to be invisible. My life has gone totally out of my control, which is when my anorexia comes back out of remission. It becomes about being the 1 thing I CAN still control: what I put in my mouth.

    I was 65 and suffering from depression and anxiety when I lost 2/3rds of my bodyweight. I could not eat and was eventually living on not much more than half a soup a day and allowing myself to fade away by this point. Because of Covid I wasn't seen. I was thin skin and bone and lost too much muscle I'll never get back. It nearly killed me and has left me more frail and with symptoms of Reactive Hypoglycemia whenever I eat meals.
    Older people need to also have eating disorders recognized sooner and get help before it is too late. The saving to the NHS compared to the cost if care later when frailty and health problems are more certain for these people would make it cost effective long term.

  • @capdan68
    @capdan68 Год назад +5

    You can easily get away with anorexic behaviours when over 55. No one believes you could possibly have an eating disorder, so it's easy to pass off weight loss as coming from the kind of life's stressors - menopausal symptoms, parents being ill or dying, issues with grown children to deal with, personal health problems, depression, etc. And women from age 55 become ugly, wrinkled and are considered worthless and invisible by society anyway, so that makes it easy to literally fade away to nothing.

    My Ed started in my late 20s after becoming a mother I feel at first I stopped eating because I was so busy with work and caring for a child by myself than after covid I had a series of unfortunate events happen which caused me to get food stamps than I started to feel guilty about eating and reserved most of my food for my son even though I could have asked for help. I liked that I was losing weight. At first I thought it was in vain but now I see it's because it's the only part of my life I have any control over and it makes me feel like I'm winning when in reality I'm still a loser.

    I am 47, I’ve had anorexia for 33 years, and it’s currently just came out of remission, yet again. I don’t weigh underweight, but even strangers have told me I’m too thin. My psychiatrist monitors it, he’s aware that I’m struggling right now, but if you don’t hit the underweight # on that scale, they don’t take it as seriously as they would if I were 14. This time it’s really bad, I am alone, and I am so tired.

      You can look too thin without being underweight if your body fat percentage is unhealthily low. It very common in compulsive exercisers. I had this happen and lost my period, had hair fall out, was exhausted all the time, frequently got sick, and had heart palpitations/arrhythmia sometimes to the point of wondering if I would make it through the night, but didn’t recognize it as a relapse since my weight was still within normal range

    Ever since I had issues with my gallbladder (which i didnt know at the time) I stopped eating for 2 weeks bc of the pain and drank only lemon water bc someone thought i had a fatty liver. Then i was told by my doctor to go low carb which pushed me into ketosis. I lost 70lbs. I was chubby before so I have last bit of fat that won't go away. I sometimes fast for 2-3 days. Lately I've been eating too much so I'm thinking of really just eating vegetables because I don't want to gain the weight back. I reckon I could lose another 20lbs but I'm not sure how to do that healthily with this gallbladder pain. I'm stuck in a cycle. So I don't know what to do.
