Jehovah’s Witness Snitching Culture

  • In this video I attempt to quickly discuss the Jehovah’s Witness snitching culture, and why it is a hallmark of cults.
I also mention how Jehovah’s Witness LOVE to snitch because they feel it is their scriptural duty based on Leviticus 5:1, but they somehow often forget the words at Matthew 18:15.
And of course I share a personal story in my life when I got snitched on.
Please share with me your JW snitching stories in the comments! The best (or the funniest) story will be pinned in the comment section!
By the way, if you’ve never heard of Steven Hassan’s BITE Model, you can take a look at it here: freedomofmind.com/bite-model/

One time I went to help a sister with her computer, the following day we sent a message and I told her she was the type of sister I would be interested in. This young sister saw it and when straight to the elders. They approached and asked me if I was dating the sister that I fixed the computer. When I found it was the young sister I asked why she didn’t come to me she just said “I got nervous because my family told me I should tell the elders”. From that day I didn’t trust anyone from the congregation

Can't trust witnesses especially if you have an interest in the opposite sex.
They'll interfere in your personal business and screw up any chance of you getting to know someone.
If in a relationship or starting out in a relationship people in the congregation will have nothing better to do than to interfere and ruin a relationship and they're happy about it.
      They're idiots.

Hi Matt, you had me in tears laughing because everything you said was soooo true. As I posted on one of your previous videos, my congregation was the disfellowshipping/reproving capital of the JWs world. The Circuit Overseers would constantly come to our hall to give needed counsel because of all of the disfellowshippings and public reprovings. I used to call our hall the Young and the Restless because it was like a soap opera. We had a sister in our congo who was a regular pioneer for years and would run to the elders on everybody. She was a single sister for many years until she married a pioneer brother. She got into trouble because she was a nurse and she apparently came across one of her JWs patients who had had an abortion and she ran to the elders on this other sister. The elders immediately disfellowshipped the sister who had the abortion and she sued the hospital because the JWs sister had snitched on her. So JWs nurses and doctors can be sued if they run to the elders on their JWs patients. JWs are not the only one who snitch on people. I work with alot of Born Agains and they love to run to the supervisors on everybody but they never tell on themselves. Snitches only want to put the spot light on other people to avoid it being on them. That is human nature.

I got snitched on by a so called brother when I was about 20. My dad got a phone call from an elder who said he wanted to speak to me at the next meeting as he'd been told I'd been swearing at this "brother's place of work".
When I got to the meeting, this elder had me at the back of the hall before the meeting started and said that "Ken" (not his real name, but his wife looked like Barbie 😂), had heard me and my friend, who was also a witness at the time, swearing. Now this was my own computer business and I was delivering to Ken's company, so I was being professional and I know that neither me or my friend had sworn. So this is what I told the elder and that my friend would confirm it. Instead of calling my friend into the conversation, which was by no means private, he calls Ken over and asks him.
Ken said that it was actually his secretary who said she thought she'd heard us swear in the hallway as we passed her office and maybe she heard wrong!! He didn't even have the balls to come and ask me if she'd heard correctly before he grassed me up! The elder was also wrong for doing it at the back of the hall in front of other witnesses according to there rules, especially if I'd have needed "private reproof".
It also turned out later that Ken was banging the secretary too, but funnily enough was never disfellowshipped or even publicly reproved, despite his wife making it very public knowledge.
Love your videos mate, I'm looking forward to the next one.

My husband and I have recently discovered your channel and have found it very interesting and entertaining. We feel you are doing a good job and hope you continue to keep it up. I am using my husband' account to write to you. I am an ex Jehovah's Witness for 30 years but married a non believer. I was of course reproved. My husband tried to come to the meetings for a while and became an un-baptised publisher until he realised it was a cult and stopped. Long story to our complicated history together which I will not go into at the moment. I wanted to tell you our amusing story of when we were dating and how we were snitched on. My parents were on holiday so I had the house to myself. I had a chaperone staying with me. One evening I was preparing a meal and my fiancee was with us. As I was busy in the kitchen and the chaperone was busy watching television, my home phone rang. I asked my fiancee to answer the phone. It was a sister from the congregation. 15 minutes later I had a phone call from the head elder of the congregation accusing me of being alone in the house together making a meal without a chaperone. I put my chaperone on the phone as proof that we were not alone. I then had a go at the elder and and said they had no right to confront us like that without confirming facts. I was informed next time my fiancee should not answer the phone. I told him it was my house I could let him answer the phone if I wished, he had no right to tell me who can answer my phone. I then phoned the sister who snitched and reminded her of the scripture you quoted and said she should get her facts straight before running to the elders. Unfortunately I had to find a new chaperone as my chaperone was now too upset. My husband and I still laugh about it to this day. I am glad that my husband persevered and supported me for years as I was leaving the cult. As I was shunned by my family and friends.

      Beware a woman scorned....lol

      Anyone got any ideas ?
Things lve been through l guess
Is it the way Women and others express
Is it part of the jezebel influence
A type of behaviour christ in revelation
      Warned against
The motivation behind ones, especially men were spoken or acted against
      When women are rejected
      it's how they cleverly vent.
Often they wont literally outwardly scream
But they make certain wherever they know
      Your plans and dreams
They scheme to cause you trouble somehow
      Vengefully vindictively equalizing hurt feelings
So You feel what they feel..

I bumped into a school friend (non-jw) who was a good friend of mine and had not seen him for a while. So we grabbed an ice cream and sat at the shop to catch up. After a few minutes, the jw woman who converted my mother walked by. I said hello and didn't act weird as I wasn't doing anything weird, but I knew from the onset that would have meant trouble. Sure enough the day after, my mother said: "Someone" said that they saw you late last night getting cozy with a guy. - I literally laughed in my mother's face and told her: first of all, that "someone" is XYZ, second of all I bumped into X (who my mother knew well him and his family and knew nothing would have been going on) and we were catching up as I have not seen him in a while, so you can tell XYZ next time to mind her business.
Another time...I used to go to the gym as I was diagnosed with scoliosis at 12 so it was important that I exercised. Going to the gym was frown upon in my congregation, but as I was quite active in the congregation and a decent kid, so other older sisters started to join and the elders didn't complain about it too much. Then some gave up as many do with exercise, but I kept going regularly, for years. At 16, this stupid girl my age also grown up in the jws, who was technically a close "friend" and she was for lack of better words a real hoe, in and out of the congregation, started coming to the gym too and was flirting with everyone. At some point, I took my distances, not even because of spirituality, just her flirty and egocentric ways were getting on my nerves as I was going there to actually do work, no flirt with people. Anyway, she got jealous of something and went to tell her mother who then told mine that I was flirting with some guy. And she "worried" for me. Full disclosure, I may have been as he was my teenage years' HUGE crush, but I never made a fool of myself, never even kissed the guy (definitely regret that LOL)...anyway, whatever I was doing it was not reprehensible. However, next thing you know, I get an elders visit and then a "local needs" talk.
Needless to say her ass got cut off from my life there and then. Even later when we were both out, she tried to reconnect with me and I was like nah....don't have time for you egocentric ass.
Then at 19YO almost 20, I moved to another country because of this snitching culture, and still they managed to harass me in the new country, boy, they must have been busy, as with a different language, I can only imagine the amount of people involved in keeping a tab on my life as they were interacting with the local elders in my new congregations. I received one pastoral visit, and that was enough for me.

When I was around 18, I once visited some of my JW family in another town and went to their Kingdom Hall with them. When I saw my favorite uncle standing near the front of the hall, I ran to give him a hug.
When my uncle saw me approaching, he quickly shouted, "Hello, niece who I have not seen in a long, long time!"
I was confused until I found out that a sister from his KH had recently snitched on him because she saw him, an unmarried man, in a car with a mystery woman. The woman, as it turns out, was his biological sister who attended a different congregation. Since then he felt it appropriate to loudly announce familial ties before engaging in any social or vaguely affectionate behavior with any of his female family members.

Ooooo, I’m traveling and just getting started on this doozy! I’ll start with the idea that snitching is about exposing someone... usually to protect your own assets. Then there’s speaking truth to the tune of I will not abide in a lie to protect you. Isn’t that character-based refusal to live in lies why we’re all here? Big difference between snitching and lying. (And I’m in the legal profession!) Ya’ll just wait til my plane lands.

I was so surprised to see how many of my childhood friends in the 'truth' would know so much about adult people's business. It would be their parents who had gained the trust of a person studying, telling their kids what was told to them in confidence. In one way it was good to warn kids about dangerous people, but on the other hand it made them little gossipers.

I hadn't thought much about "snitching." But way back when, you kept your homosexuality secret. I got disfellowshipped for homosexuality and that just sort of advertised to everybody I was gay. I didn't think that was fair. I could no longer hide that fact. It was like being "outed." It was horrible. Even after getting reinstated I couldn't deal with being openly "gay" in the congregation. I was afraid of going to the rest room for fear some adolescent would get caught in the rest room with me and cause people to worry. Plus those were the early days of the AIDS scare and I had to note in my reinstatement letter that I was free of AIDS and so as not to worry. It was just too much. I couldn't become "active" again until I moved far, far away from the area I was known in. But it was interesting that I was not openly gay in my private life and my work life, but I was at the Kingdom Hall. A sick situation that didn't work. I couldn't function in the congregation. Fortunately, I'm free from that now.

I’ll admit I snitched re: a possible impropriety with a minor. Yes, it was through gossip. A sister called to warn me about a brother who may have molested his niece (Sister was a friend of the family, also witnesses). I had a daughter a bit younger. After talking to her, I was shocked because she told me stuff about this brother I had no clue about. Needless to say, I ran to the elders and met with them. They “praise me” for basically keeping it “in house” and for not spreading slanderous gossip also. In hindsight, I think I played into the hush game of hiding this kind of behavior in the congregation. Made sense, why several years back this brother was deleted as an elder and never gave parts. AND, during this time, the brother’s “home computer“ was somehow stolen with all it’s contents (before cloud storage). Even though his comments were very “elderly” and he came off as very spiritual, he was never given privileges. When I left, he also had a very heavy drinking problem. When there is info control, you just don’t know what you don’t know. SMH in disgust, because I looked both elders in the eye and asked, “Can you assure me that my children are safe in this congregation with this brother?”

She even turned me in a couple of times. There was an elder who was on drugs. My mother with all of her righteous indignation, repeatedly turned him in. He was disfellowshipped EVENTUALLY. But his grown children still have bad feelings towards my mom today (decades later) for turning their father in so many times. I'm like hell, she turned me in. Among many other things, they told me any questions that I wish to ask don't ask any of the brethren, ask the minister. I ask questions to whoever I want, I replied. Do you want me to disfellowship you? I said... OH...No! ...don't bother, I'm leaving all by myself. Good-bye! I simply walked away, and never looked back again.
A few weeks later I was told, that that minister was shifted to another location. That minister will never forget my name because before my fallout with the church the minister and his wife had another child, a baby boy, and named him Benjamin.

For myself, I hated the idea of reporting "sins" to the elders, but absolutely believed my eternal life and that of the "sinner's:" depended on it. There were times as a young person that I gave an erring JW the chance to mother confess to the elder or I would report. Dreadful. It went against my true self and not was life everything else as a JW for me: driven by fear, guilt and shame. I hated it but I obeyed.
The craziness of this is illustrated in the fact that for several years my sister (and best friend) and I both no longer believed it was the Truth, and yet never even hinted at this to each other for fear of losing each other, our mother, and all the congregation.
