- I have enjoyed the Kuryakyn soundbar on my 2018 Heritage Softail for almost an entire year! I receive a ton of requests for an install video, so here it is. It does fit pretty much anything, I just happen to be installing it on a Harley Davidson.

Welcome back John, not the same without ya. Hope our paths cross one of these days.
Man... I'm an Electrical Engineer and soldering two wires together has always been so much fun. Me being a total grouch and completely hating fun of any kind what so ever, I plan to now steal your incredibly genius design to hold two wires with terminal clips! :'D
Lol I’ll stop hounding you about the sound bar install! Thanks John!
I installed this sound bar in my street bob with the help of a friend, we connected to one of my tail lights and it works great, I did not use any other wiring harness other than what was in the box.
pochi143 so you went to the positive and ground then tapped into the tail light harness and that’s it ?
I will double check which one I connected to the battery and which one to the light, and I will let you know.
Hope everything is good in the Maxwell homestead !! Its great to see your videos again my friend !!
Bought a bike from you guys a few weeks ago and these vids keep making me come back for more parts
Thank you for posting these videos man. Really. I just got a '97 sportster. I don't know anything at all about bikes. Took my bike to the local harley dealership for the 50,000 mile service and hoped maybe he would describe things to me or help me not be quite so ignorant on things. Yea right. Dude barely has the patience to answer one of my questions. Tried to show him a picture and the specs of a rear wheel I need and he wouldn't even look at it. He said, "16 inches thats all that matters! 16 inches!" Ordered the wheel and tried to have him install it for me and nope. Its the wrong wheel he says. He says its not even a rear tire lol. Been working on my own bike, all the fluids I have checked look old and nasty. Thought he replaced the engine oil and master cylinder fluid on the 50,000 mile $500 service I got less than 3 weeks ago. Only 15 miles on my bike since then. Wow I'm typing a lot of shit. I just feel bitter and like I can't trust any motorcycle mechanics. Never again am I going to Redding Harley. But you are great. Thank you man!
I swear you read my mind! I just got mine yesterday and am clueless in what to do with the wiring on a heritage and BAM here you go.... first time writing with electrical on my bike and im hoping to learn what I need to from you. Thanks in advance!
EDIT: nevermind... the part I needed help with was fast forwarded, and had different parts.... thanks anyway though.
Did you understand what I was saying about getting the extra harness? The instructions in that kit are super simple.
Thank you sir for the blast from the past. That is a nice little unit from Kuryakyn.
John you are a genius! That soldering jig is awesome. I'll be making one of those. And I like the instructions. After all, isn't that what the service manual is? A big book of instructions. Great to have you back bro.
Excited like a little kid when I see my pal John has uploaded a video!
Man, you could review a turd laying on the sidewalk and it'd be a lot better than a lot of the stuff on Y/T.
Gotta love that Freewheeler though right, 😎😎😎 Another great video Mr. Maxwell. Putting one on my wifes Heritage next weekend.
I kept calling it the road glide. I got back to edit feeling like a bit ol’ dummy!
Awesome video. Buying that harness made the install so easy!!!! Thanks!
The video we've all been waiting for...
Hey john glad to see you coming back love your content
John, I recently purchased a soundbar Plus for my 2018 Fatboy.
When I installed it I did not use the wiring harness for my bike. I simply tapped into a tail light ignition wire. My check engine light came on and will not go off. So I purchased a harness that you recommended by Harley-Davidson. Do you have a detailed video on how to install that wiring harness and which plug on my bike do I plug into because I can't find a detailed video of how to install the harness. Please get back with me. I enjoy your videos . Thanks for your time. Signed, David
Thanks for video bought a heritage classic with soundbar and made it way easier to remove without randomly cutting wires.

Puedes darme la traducción en español de cómo instalarlo por favor 🙏y si puedo instalarlo en una moto eléctrica. Puedes ayudarme lo necesito urgente por favor 🙏
Remember a year ago??? I can't remember a week ago . Great video Thanks . God Bless
Been looking for one for Momma Badgers bike this looks like a great option, thanks for the video.
Great vid John!! Love your content. Glad your back
Glad that you're back, man. After having this bar on the bike for a while now, and probably hearing other speakers on bikes since then, do these still stand up, or are there others out there you like more?
Excellent install John, very well done as usual 💯✌️😎
You Da Man! Thanks for the DIY brother!!! 🤘😎
Hey John, thanks for the video. Does Harley have an electrical connection kit for 12/13 Touring models? I have the same sound bar and have it connected to the rear TS harness (orange and white wire) but would much rather install it like you have it. Any suggestions?
Hey John is the sound bar worth it? I was thinking of getting the pods and the sound bar with the remote. I’m talking almost $700.00 my question for you is do you regret the sound bar?
John, great video as usual! I have a 2019 FXBB with the Fat Chizeled handlebar. I almost pulled the trigger on the Boom Cruiser kit, but I think the Kuryakyn might have a better sound. Do you think the mounts for the sound bar will work with the narrow Fat Chizeled bars?
Question for you........
Do you have to take the sound bar off to wash the bike?
Thanks, Renegade.
Hey John, my question for you is:
I am already utilizing the CANBUS plug for my V&H fuelpack. Will I be able to plug in both my fuelpack and the kuryakyn soundbar to the 11 to 17 softail harness ?
The make 24 inch by 3/8 zip ties. You cut the end off , drill a 3/64 inch hole in it long enough to pull wires thru frame
Hey my sound bar should be in any day now. I like the plug and play idea but as far as keeping cost down, (also because all my patience has run out with parts from Harley atm) I’m going to splice wires and use some heat shrink butt connectors. I’m a marine mechanic and do that daily. It will be nice and water tight. My big question, is this possible to do without removing the tank? It looks like I can get a wire snake through the frame without having to take that tank off.
You might can. Honestly, tanks are just expensive, and paint repair sucks. So I like to get them out of the way. Removal of them on touring and the new softail is so easy, it’s worth it.
John Maxwell Thanks, I’ll follow that advice. I also am calling on the harness tomorrow. Harley website says they’re in stock at the local dealer. Love the channel.
@@TheHarleyTech I was going to ask the same thing about removing the tank. I also have the 2018 Heritage Softail and just got my sound bar in the mail today. I haven't worked on this bike yet but have installed a starter on my 03 dyna so I'm hoping to manage this myself. Any chance you have a video of tank removal? Can you please tell me what the benefit is of using the HD wiring connection kit vs. what comes with the speaker? I may add heated grips at some point and don't know if having the kit will help me later. Thanks for any information!
Another Great video Brother 👊 ! Robert Lee Kerns - Columbus GA 😎
I ordered several months ago from harley part # 69201599A for my 2021 FXBBS Street Bob but also ordered the wiring kit for the Denali SoundBomb, and have the Kuryakyn MTX Sound Bar. How many items can you hook up to the Harley accessory wiring kit and am I better off installing a FuzeBlock or PDM60 solid state fuze block for accessories? I like to keep it neat, easy to add future accessories and troubleshoot if I have problems.
Oh since I'm asking, I bought an engine braking brake light activator to flash the brake lights when I do engine breaking however it is for the street bob models and others with one brake light circuit but I have two separately wired brake lights and not sure how to add this to activate both brake lights without screwing up the blinker function. I don't know maybe I'm over thinking it but the dealership said they don't know anything about it so didn't offer any help.
Ride on. Brother! Love the videos.
Hey John really enjoy the videos and the info!! I have a 2014 Heritage and was wondering what your thoughts of Carlini 1.5” handlebars. I’d have to change the risers also.
Hey John stupid question here, buddy of mine got the sound bar and it blows my street glide system away, now with system upgrade for a street glide is crazy expensive can a sound bar work on a street glide to with the Bluetooth function and the system that's on it too
In regard to your recent road incident, thank God only your pride was hurt . In regard to the incident factors, you have a single front disk brake. Its on the left front. Now I have a 2018 fat boy, same situation. One left front brake. On oily or gravel roads you have to lay off the front brake and use more of the rear brake to help you track properly. Linked brakes help but you still need to pay attention to this situation. I'm 62 and have been riding since my teen years. Have a freewheeler and Electra glide too. Only the single disk bikes have this issue. My road king was more reliable in dirt and gravel as is the electroglide. Hope this keeps you safe!!
great video.... I THINK I can do this myself (using your video) I have a sportglide 2019
First, great video on this as mine just showed up! I'm installing on a 2009 Heritage so those filaments don't work with this model. So my question is: how to wire it in?
I just got this but I am having a problem. None of the clamps fit my bars and kuryakyn was no help. The one set I can get to "tighten" on the bars but it still moves. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this?
Funny..🤣 Thanks John for the video..👍🏻
I wonder how good you can hear it at highway speeds. I was thinking about this system after buying a fairing for my streetbob. Its all highway for me to get to work. Just want to know if it is worth it or not for me to buy.
Would it be possible to link the sound bar and two stand alone speakers also?
Always enjoyable,,,,,,thanks John.
Ocala Fl.
When wrapping tape around something for temporary fix. leave a tail sticking out by wrapping to itself . Give you something to grab and unwrap it. AKA a Buddy Tab
That is super useful. A lot of times that little tab gets stuck and torn inside handlebars, though. I already generally end up with some torn up tape after a handlebar job, in this case I probably could have done it that way, but it’s not a habit.
@@TheHarleyTech Its a habit for me. Work on aerospace connectors. Bag and tag. Buddy tab is useful tool. I see your point . Ride safe
So, I have heard the speaker is useless when highway cruising, at over $500 it would be nice to hear from you if that’s B.S. or not ??
Does these speakers sound better than playing music through your Sena? Thanks for the video!
It does sound better than a helmet headset. It also allows you to continue to hear your surroundings.
John Maxwell that makes sense. I sent you a message on Instagram if you look at those at all.
JOHN THAT SAME HARNESS YOU USED, DOES 1 OR 2 OF THE PLUGS GET CONNECTED ?
I had a question regarding a 2017 Harley Davidson Heritage classic. The date port on my bike there’s only a plug port with a cap on it. Is that the one you connect to for accessories.
Glad you're good. Quick question. I have a power commander plugged in to the aux power plug on my 13 dyna. Does HD make a splitter so I can hook a speaker up to it?
John I have the XL harness did you connect just the red and black or did you connect the orange to the red?
Is it really worth buying? Can you still here it doing around 70 loud and clear. I like to make my 103 scream but I want to hear my music while I do it.
Great little setup with the alligator clips. how did you make them? It might not be worth your time but I would like to know.
they're alligator clips with a threaded end on them. I cut up a piece of plastic from an air cleaner backing plate, and drilled holes in it. used some machine screws to tighten the alligator clips to the plastic. voila. technically plenty of companies make something very similar. Matco and Snap on trucks have them. I'd bet eBay/amazon/harbor frieght also offers some.
Is it safe to assume that with this sound bar installed, accessing a standard Harley windshield bag (2018-2020 FLHC/S) is pretty much next to impossible?
If I were rockin that sound bar on bars like that I would wrap a blanket in front of it to try to hide it a little bit.
What kit would I need for the 2020 Street Bob FXBB if you wouldn’t mind sharing?
John just bought a stereo what’s the easiest install power wise....on a 08 heritage softail.
John, if I install one of these myself is my warranty going to be voided by HD? Seems the dealer up here has been denying warranty work for entire bikes because of self installed things that have nothing to do with the parts needing repair and even on defective equipment the dealer installed incorrectly.
That’s not at all how warranty works, as long as what you install has nothing to do with the issue, your warranty is good.
John great detail and extra tips on how to do a quality install, I really like the additional steps you do and using the Harley wiring harness. Remember instructions are over rated ...... well not really!
Love to get you to install this on my road king.
Thanks for the video buddy
john quick question do you know off the top of your head if the wire harness you have in this video is compatible with an 18 street bob fxbb?
Your softail uses the same harness as my 2019 street bob. Harleys harness instructions might as well of been written in Chinese. I have no clue what goes where besides the negative, positive and ground. Do possibly have photos of what goes where. I don't have the sound bar but I do have the kuryakyn road thunder speaker pods.
Nice video, how did you make the solder clips. That’s slicker than snot on Teflon.
Looks like two alligator clips screwed into a piece of scrap plastic... Shouldn’t be too challenging to figure out.
Thanks John!
Anyone know if the 300w spec is factoring a draw from the USB charger? Want to install on an 06' Softail and I don't bust the output of the stator's generation. Any info is appreciated!
I miss you!!!
I have the Road King police edition that has speedo mounted on the handlebars. Is there room or a way to still it mount it?
Hey John!! - With a speaker system like this (or this one in particular), is there any battery draw while the bike is off?
Not when used with the harness I added. I have seen them draw when wired without it.
@@TheHarleyTech thanks much for the reply! It was something I've been considering and half-worried about. Might have to add it the way *you* have shown us!! :D
Great job!!
I love Kuryakyn! just cant afford their stuff😂😂
FORSCHISHORD it should be less than a HD product
Jbl cruise what I got my eye on for audio... A lot more affordable
I start motorcycle mechanic school in may .. was there lots of homework ? Other then research
My Bluetooth isn’t working with mine. Called Kuryakin and they don’t have techs that you can talk to. Just operators for ordering
Did you ever figure out what was drawing down your battery?
Pretty sure it was the lightning cable for my phone. I stopped leaving it plugged into the phone mount and all is well.
Can you tell us about the Softail Standard that's coming out.
I just bought this speaker on amazon do i need any extra parts to install
John, where did you get that vest you always wear, when riding
Question for anyone watching this video and who have installed the soundbar using the shown HD Electrical Connection harness: The Kuryakyn Soundbar Plus I just purchased has two wires with fuses. A red wire with 7.5 amp fuse and a orange wire with 2 amp fuse. In JM's video, his Kuryakyn Sound bar only has one red fused wire and at 3:10, he cuts off the fuse on the red wire because the harness has a 10 amp fuse. My question is this -would I need to cut both the red wire fuse AND the orange wire fuse on the new soundbar plus I bought and then wire accoringly as shown in video?
We have the same question. All hooked up and radio will not work. What color wires go to whAt?
Dude... Which wire should I use on 2009 FXDC?
Well that explains why I can't hook up my accessory wire on my 19 heritage as I was issued 69201636 to connect my spectra glo. I think I need to order 69201599A.
Where is the ignition wire for a 2018 heritage classic 107? Thanks for any info.
Does the sound bar turn on and off with the switch with using the HD wiring harness?
Can outside speakers and amplifier be added to this system what are the input and output holes on the side for?
It sticks up to high. I would like it closer to the handlebars.
Any help on Bluetooth connection? I am having a hard time connecting via Bluetooth power button blinks blue but not showing up on Bluetooth pairing with phone
I wish this was helpful for me but I have a Honda shadow and no clue how to install
Where do you hook the orange wire on a 2012 heritage softail
Sir vapes a lot. Classic
It works at stop lights other that I can't hear shit. If you get one of these and want to hear it while riding, buy two.
I find that true for the older 150 watt version. The plus model at 300 watts is so much louder.
What will I need for a 2012 roadking for the adapter ?
Is there a kit for an 06 EFI FXSTDI?
What harness kit do I need if I have a 98 softail custom
Why buy a kit if you still got to splice and dice?
Well I guess it's a piece of cake if your bike doesn't have a gas tank. Probably sounds better too.
I bought this for my dyna returned the day after. Plex Audio rules
Plex audio is solid, for sure. You just have to run a fairing. Good for Dyna, not so for the heritage.
And twice the price...
Hi John! Do you can to make a video for install a stage 1 on a Sportster with the pro street tuner Screamin’Eagle?
the sound bar sucks. it is ok till 80KM/H but after that you hear nothing at all. I installed it on a 2020 Harley Heritage Classic, tried it for a short one hour ride and now I am ready to take it off the bike.
Too much not covered (skipped) and covered (by hands and body). :/
I remember the original video (review)
Because Death Metal makes everything that much better :D
Ive wondered for months is john saying highly trained & professional or highly trained unprofessional (liablity cover) being official tech, genuine question no offence i struggle sometimes with the accent.
Highly trained unprofessional.
