i swear everytime i have a question about doing something on my piano you have a video for it. thank you so much. you have made becoming a piano tech and fixing my first rebuild so much easier
Thanks for watching Stephen. This is probably because these are the tasks that I learned when rebuilding pianos for the first time. I'm glad they have been helpful!
Yes, and I'll get to making videos of the other parts of rebuilding hammer butts eventually too. I thought of making everything in one video but there were too many steps for one video.
I just wished there was a video about how to restore the soundboard. I mean, why restore the action ( which I did) if the soundboard is worn out? (Like on my piano, although it's a hamburg Steinway).
In most cases it's not really practical to replace the hammer felts. There is a company that will do this, but it's much better just to replace the hammers if the felt is worn down. You can't really clean the felt.
I'm repairing Grand backcheck leather. Do you glue leather to the underfelt or just at the ends of the leather. I'll be replacing the underfelt as well.

Wow, that was fast, thanks howardpianoind You made a video before I could even get around to posting a suggestion for this!

this seems a little more complicated than some of the other things, but great explanation. howardpianoind

I will add it to the list. Thanks for watching!
How would the bottled hide glue, like Titebond work?
Is it possible to replace the actual hammer felt, or do you just have to iron them out. What about cleaning dirty felt?

It's best to just glue the ends of the leather as this will produce less noise.
howardpianoind Thanks so much.
