    "HGV should have waited". Alternatively you could have noticed he had already started his manoeuvre turning from a main road into a tight side road and held back as soon as you passed the van so that he could complete it.

    3:04 No, he should ABSOLUTELY NOT have sped up. That CAN work, but most of the time it only makes things worse and before you know it you will have damaged your tow bar or worse.
    What you really need to do here is: keep the steering wheel in place (don't countersteer) and HIT THE BRAKES. When your trailer gets unstable, you DON'T accelerate. Ever. You slow down.
    This guy actually did the right thing in the situation at hand. He had made his mistake before, by going too fast and not hitting the brakes soon enough when the road went downhill and/or started getting uneven.

    • @muttly1301
      @muttly1301 Месяц назад

      Don't brake - the caravan will push past you, Jack-knifing. Was always told to come off the power, don't counter steer and let the weight of the trailer/caravan slow you down.
      And then go get the rear tires checked - happened to my parents many years ago and it wrecked the tyres.
      Driver did well to hold it.

  • @AzguardMike

    that on at 3:47 - sadly more and more people are doing that, with the mentality of "they can just eff-ing stop." I've been on the receiving end of that mindset when i was on a main road that was 50MPH with a staggered junction. Woman decided to take a chance in perfect clear day conditions. Hit her full speed in the driver side, rolled her car and the airbag deployed hard in her face. She had a horrible black eye from it and was screaming for help. Handed the dashcam footage in later to the police and she had to go to court for dangerous driving.
    Both cars were a right off, she was begging me not to claim on the insurance. Was offering to pay for my repairs too. Thing was, i injured my back, slipped disc at the base, so was off work for 18 months. So no income after a few months, no car to get the family around, you bet i claimed on her insurance and took her to court for the injury i sustained. Got a lovely cash payout and she was disqualified for driving and ordered to attend a driver awareness course.

    Maybe he should learn to distribute the weight in a caravan correctly. And then take a driving course.

    • @arthur_p_dent
      @arthur_p_dent Месяц назад +3

      in the meantime, speeding up in order to straighten the trailer as suggested in the video would have been about the WORST thing the driver could have done - ESPECIALLY if the weight distribution is the issue. Chances are the trailer would have spun even more out of control and, at the very least, have damaged the tow bar.
      In fact, excessive speed was the chief probem that triggered the problem to begin with (maybe he should have hit the brakes on going downhill - that trailer behind him pushes the car quite a bit when you go downhill, you need to take account of that). He was going so fast that I am not even sure there was uneven distribution involved. Either way, just go a little slower, especialy in curves and uneven surfaces, and this won't happen. If the distribution is uneven - well, you need to go even slower. It's really as simple as that.

    Mr Snakey caravan. Oh dear. First, get a friction hitch fitted. Second don't drive like a twat and realise you're only allowed to do 60mph when you're towing. Oh, and check your nose weight, and loading of your caravan, don't put anything heavy at the back.

    Snaking of the caravan. The driver was going too fast to begin with. He should have just took his foot of the accelerator, and let the car slow down on its own, don't do force braking. Big mistake that would be. He was lucky this time. If he'd have gone faster, it would have make it totally worse

    • @arthur_p_dent
      @arthur_p_dent Месяц назад

      Agree about the first part - he was too fast to begin with. Possibly failed to hit the brakes on a descent, forgetting how the extra weight is pushing the car to higher speeds.
      But once the situation was like that - don't countersteer and DO HIT THE BRAKES.
      But yes, he did get lucky. This could easily have ended in the guard railing. And if he had heeded the advice in the video (speed up to straighten), things could have gone MUCH worse.

    Unfortunately the caravan drivers mistake was made long before the incident occurred. The mistake was not balancing the caravan properly, if done right, it should change direction quickly just fine without wanting to swing. Unfortunately many people can now tow trailers and caravans without taking any kind of theory & practical test. Most drivers n the road don’t have a single clue about weight distribution.
