i’m 21 years old, and to my understanding he wrote this at 23. i think i have some wits about me, but absolutely nothing that would compare to what this song is. seriously some of the best lyrics of the last decade.
I was once told by a song writer that you need to write a 100 mediocre songs before you’re able to write 1 great one. I’m sure you’d be perfectly capable of writing lyrics just as good as Hozier lyrics if that’s something you want to do. You just gotta practice and be dedicated and you’ll get there. There’s no hurry, just because one person achieved something at a certain age does not make you less valid for taking longer to get there. Don’t rush or stress about slow progress, we all take the time we need.
He is and will always be a POET, first. What a joy that he also happens to sing beautifully. You dont have to look far to see all the passion he puts into his work. ❤ Was not expecting to cry at the end 😭
as an Iranian woman, it means a lot to me that he mentioned last year's protests and that he supported us through his platform back then. and even though we are still struggling and fighting for freedom(not just for the right not to wear hijab but for many other basic human rights) this kind of support even if it doesn't do much for us its still very heartwarming.thank you Andrew.
I am also an Iranian woman and I 100% agree with you that it made me so happy to see and I really appreciate it, but I would argue that it does do a lot because many people don't know about the protests, so having someone with such a large platform talk about it and talk about it in such a positive way, is really helpful because it educates people on the topic

“Take Me to Church” is such a passionate anthem for all of us who have felt deep grievances with religious organizations that demonize our humanity. It’s just so perfectly written. ❤
as an Iranian this song is as relatable as it can get for me. it breaks my heart everytime I hear it 😞 a warning to rest of the world: we lost our country, our people, our culture and our human rights to organized religions. don't do the same to your countries, don't..
It is indeed.. while I am a religious person myself, there are indeed too many people who have been hurt by religious organizations. I would say though, that religion and spirituality provide the most depth and honesty about our humanity. I hope that you and many others may be welcome in a spiritual community that accepts you as you are. As your honest, open self

Six minutes and 14 seconds of me having full body goosebumps. Like this song is just perfect. His entire discography is perfect. I saw Hozier live last weekend and I swear there was real magic in that venue during the concert. 💖
I've been a fan of hozier and loved this song for a long time but as an Iranian woman "take me to church" hits so different now since it was used as an anthem for protesters to express their frustration with the islamic republic. It's really refreshing to see how he acknowledges and supports the "woman life freedom" movement especially now at the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's murder. I hope this brings more inspiration for people in the front rows not to lose motivation❤
I remember back in school when this song came out and was really popular we were just doing Rimbaud and Verlaine, Baudelaire and overall French Decadentism in connection to Italian literature so we stumbled upon the term "la petit mort" and I almost scream because I finally understood the meaning of "deathless death" in the song. My teacher asked me what was wrong so I told her and we ended up listening to the song in class and discussing its meaning. to this day, one of the most memorable lessons ever

I can honestly say 10 years ago at 21 this song definitely felt too heavy for me. In the sense that I often listen to music to escape and keep it light and fun. Hearing it now at 31, becoming a mother, living more life, wow, I am in awe of it.
I love this song because many of us Christians forget that God loves all and we need to do the same. Someone’s beliefs or sexuality or anything does not exclude them from the right to decency, love, and Gods love. I’m so glad he wrote this song
This was powerful, so deeply meaningful - and some lols. As it should be. Happy this is the song that I sung a lot while teaching myself to sing, and continued to come back to even after going a chorus and acapella group. Thank you Genius for having him on, 9 years later 💛🙏🏽

i just discovered this wonderful man and this song a few months ago. he is an absolute treasure. saw him at red rocks a few nights ago and it was incredible.
i discovered this song in 2014,every year to date i revisit it, to an extent that even my children loved it till they were teenagers ,we interpreted it in our own different ways of which we somewhat agreed that it could be mostly about an unaccepted love between 2 ppl who are genuinely obsessed with one another despite the confinements of the outside world ,they are in their own world of which only the 2 of them exist ,we still sing along each lyric by heart and my word some songs songs are better on loud and this is definitely one of them ,we up the volume and sing along like it's a choir 😅
Loved hearing him talk about this song. Can anyone who understands music tell me what happens in the song/music right before he sings "No masters or kings when the ritual begins"? That part brings tears to my eyes every time! It's incredibly moving. This song is a true masterpiece ❤
I hope he see some of this, but songs like this are why music sustains humanity and allows it to find hope, beauty and inspiration at the worst of times. Please continue to share your genius

@@JamesAshton-tr8wg 😂 But the chorus has nothing to do with church either, but that other thing the song is about. 😂
@@JamesAshton-tr8wg yeah, but still
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog
At the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins
So you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
This is not a good look for christianity either lol
As an iranian women myself it means a lot to me and probably many other people that he spoke about the protests and struggles of Iranian women, it is nice to see one of my favorite artists use their platform and support us.
after YEARS of me begging genius to let hozier explain his lyrics, this finally it tbh I don't think there's other artist more deserving as hozier to be a guest here
As an Iranian, it means so much to us that he brought awareness to what's going on in Iran and Sarina's brutal death. Thank u Hozier
I can't believe it took them so long to bring Hozier here. He is such a wonderful artist
Very interesting what he says about the similarity with Born in the U.S.A. It's pretty nuts how many people still seem to completely misinterpret that song, like this one.
Beliefs have a whole lot to do with it
Loved how he read it like a poem.
This was powerful, so deeply meaningful - and some lols. As it should be. Happy this is the song that I sung a lot while teaching myself to sing, and continued to come back to even after going a chorus and acapella group. Thank you Genius for having him on, 9 years later 💛🙏🏽
My grandmother is a very very religious woman and loves this song just because auf the title! She never realy listened to it.
I love the song because of the lyrics and the meaning!
As a Christian woman, this song resonates so much with me. I know the abuses the church has set on other people and I'm glad that it's finally being acknowledged. The rawness of this song beautifully portrays true love and religion in the same sense.
❤
Imagine going to church your whole life just to let some sinner demon make a song sound nice and change your mind 😂 youre actually a joke. Its like eve biting the apple. & stop calling yourself the Big C cause you’re obviously not supportive

This is the comment I’ve been waiting for
As a Christian, I sometimes have conflicting feelings about the song because of its duality
Thanks for sharing your insights
bro thats sad that as a christian you still see this song as a good piece
"I come up very short against courage like that". Such a powerful ending.
This man is a genius. I love every single song that he creates! It's refreshing to see real musicians who put so much heart into their songs.
This man is a lyrical genius in all his songs and this song still remains the best one of all time.
If there’s any song that deserves an explanation like this, it’s this one
This is one of those timeless pieces of music that simply just is supposed to exist. Gives me chills every single time 💛
I am so grateful for this!
Finally people can no longer contest the meaning of this beautiful song.
It is not “open for interpretation”
It has a strong meaning and significance
His voice is so amazing and poetic, whether speaking or in song. I love his thought process, his gentleness, and his poignancy
I love his lyricism so much. He's such a creative writer as well as a musician, lots of love for that man.
i just discovered this wonderful man and this song a few months ago. he is an absolute treasure. saw him at red rocks a few nights ago and it was incredible.
never picked up on the “holy see” reference! i love this breakdown
me too even ten years on I still discover gems in this song
Hearing him speak on this song is so beautiful and calming, it could be a 10hr loop for falling asleep
His voice is so soft, yet so powerful
I love the poetry behind it, and how he knows what hes talking about
i discovered this song in 2014,every year to date i revisit it, to an extent that even my children loved it till they were teenagers ,we interpreted it in our own different ways of which we somewhat agreed that it could be mostly about an unaccepted love between 2 ppl who are genuinely obsessed with one another despite the confinements of the outside world ,they are in their own world of which only the 2 of them exist ,we still sing along each lyric by heart and my word some songs songs are better on loud and this is definitely one of them ,we up the volume and sing along like it's a choir 😅
This one makes me feel as if I'm sitting in a poetry/literature class and Professor Hozier walks me through the meaning of each verse.
also gives references for further reading
This is my favorite song of all time, it's so pretty and his voice is so gorgeous. It's so meaningful to me.
how is this only the first one of these hes done? all of his songs are beautiful poetry!
I could listen to him speaking about his lyrics all day.
damn after all these years😮
I had no idea he was Irish. I'm even more in love with him now 😍😩❤️
When he started reading the lines of the songs, I got goosebumps. Such artistry.
One of the best songs of all time. One of my favorites too.
I can’t believe he’s just reading the lyrics lol I was looking forward to hearing him sing 😭
he said we must learn the words and its meaning because we've been distracted by his beautiful voice too much to bother learning the words
Hell, him just saying the lyrics is that poetic voice reminds my of those Calm night time stories! 😆
he sings in his elle song association vid! not the same but it was great haha
His singing voice is loud as it's a loud song, I don't think it would be helpful
I can’t believe it’s been 10 years, here’s to 10 more of a great song and an amazing artist
the best lyricist currently working. absolutely immense talent, this guy.
