I think it shows just how talented of an actor he is. He's not just playing multiple characters, the character he's playing as is. Jim Carrey did it too, they're both amazing.
Never in a million years would I have believed that casting Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf would have been one of the most perfect casting decisions on television.
Xander Patten Agreed. They have a Wes Anderson feel but as is pointed out they also have a lot of similarities to The Adams Family as well as the original film.
Xander P i must agree. If you look at the sets closely at the sets you can tell there is just so much detail in it. For example, in one of the sets (lumber mill i think) has 14 unlucky objects in it from all around the world. The last set (island) is just the top tho.
everyone agrees that the way Netflix made those freaking sets was like taken exactly the way we saw it in the books.....I was blown away when they got the green from the reptile room the way lemony made it be like in our brains.
Neil did a really fantastic job in the first season, much better than i thought he could be, because i just knew him from How i met your mother and movies where he played a almost simular role.
I think it's going to be a fantastic role for broadening his career and breaking him out of any typecasting. Still, he's nothing like doogie howser so he's already shown a wide range. People just forget his older roles.
Dylan I loved that it was so funny and clever! Did you know it was done as a thing for actors to do while the writers and producers were on strike and the money it made all went to charity
Absolutely legendary. It feels like Dr. Horrible was preparation for this. So much better than the movie. Witty, clever, amazing. 6 stars on a 5 star scale.
I had the fortunate experiance to work on this show i actually worked at the makeup shop that did all the prosthetics and every day seeing these characters being created was amazing:)
im a VFS graduate from the makeup program dude. sorry if my spelling upsets you.i have deslexia. if you like you can look me up on facebook to see some of my work, i always enjoy sharing my work with new people.
I love how this show can appeal with so many different ages, as a teen I absolutely love it because I've fallen in love with the film as a small child, but small kids can enjoy it too
so many people say that the child actors who play violet and Klaus are so bland but in the books that is how the kids act so I think they did well acting their characters especially with what they had to work off of from the books
Pearl555 Absolutely. Violet and Klaus are not very expressive characters so having the actors play them any way but the way they are would be completely wrong. The scene leading up to the final musical number was really well done, Violet looked so numb.
I thought the child actors were amazing and knowing how hard it is to get good performances out of children, either they are genius's or they were good combined with very good directors.
To me, I always took it that the Baudelaires are quite devastated by everything that's happening around them, but they have no choice but to adjust, move forward, and do what they can, in large part because most of the adults in their lives are inept at looking out for them. They don't have time to fully grieve. I don't think the child actors were bland at all though. I think they were perfect at producing and evoking the right amount of emotion.
Considering the world they live in is an absurd world where all kind of crazy things happen and characters don't act like a normal person would, their reactions are perfectly believable. Their acting was spot on.
I really felt like their personalities shone through very well and their behaviors always seemed understandable and fitting for their characters. You don't see that a lot tbh
If you cried... you may be in for a rough season 2. It's dark comedy. Better to enjoy the terrible deaths. Monty was really likable. I loved his mustache.
I think Neil Patrick Harris hit the nail on the hammer , we live in a society that is just tried of company's just towering over and micro managing every little detail to the point where the content becomes trash. They should allow writers and other content creators just do there job and make there art.
This is the first Netflix show that I've re-watched multiple times. First by myself, then with my family, and then friends, partner, and then by myself again to see what I missed from all those other times. Love the show! Love Neil Patrick Harris! I can't wait for Season 2!
Stop comparing NPH to Jim Carrey! Jim Carrey did an amazing performance as County Olaf, he is one of the best comedian actors and has always given his unique stamp to all of his performances. Now NPH's performance as Count Olaf is also fantastic I think he worked on it really hard and did an amazing job from singing the opening theme to the multiple persona changes. Both actors are great but they're to different so stop comparing.
I'm extremely picky when books get turned into movies/shows and I think they did an amazing job here. I was listening to an old interview with Daniel Handler and his response to when it takes place was something like "Like most books it mainly takes place on weekdays." and when asked where he said. "It takes place in the Baudelairs city ad the surrounding area."
"Then I read the book; then I read one of the scripts. And they were very, very similar." Well considering they were both written by the exact same guy :P
Is it weird that I feel uncomfortable watching this? The interviewer is not good at transitioning to the next topic. But other than that, NPH is good as Count Olaf on this show. I really hope Netflix picks up season 2.
no idea if it's true but i read the 2nd series will be out Friday 13th October this year! Think they basically have to film all of it in 1 go a la Lord of the Rings cause of the kids growing up too quick for the series timeline
I'm really looking forward to season 2! Just because we've seen most of the events from the first season from the older movie (books- 1-3)... My favorite books were 5, 7, 8, and 12 so I'm really excited to see how they do those
Neil did an amazing job on this it is honestly my favourite series on Netflix or basically any more because like he just all the actors are so Talented and they're so focused on getting it right and it's just amazing
Neil's portrayal of Olaf is amazing! It really got me to hate him while watching it which I initially thought was humanly impossible, as he is so lovable in real life :)
I just finished watching season 1 and like Neil's version of Count Olaf SO much better than Jim Carrey's. I found the show charming and can't wait for season 2 to start on March 30th.
Thank you Mr. Harris for a great interview. And an outstanding performance as Count Olaf. As much as I am a fan of Jim Carey, you are the best choice for this character. While being super hilarious you also let all the other characters shine. This is an evergreen show that you can watch over and over.
neil patrick harris you are one of the greatest actors alive.. hats off to you ...want to see more of you. Himym was good Series of unfortunate events better, the best is yet to come...
Okay, this is, by fair, honestly the best interview with NPH I've ever seen. Why? It's THE LONGEST one, and btw. great questions, but I still wanna more.
Started filming a second season. It will contain ten episodes: Book 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.I CANNOT wait to see the school, the village, the hospital and the carnival. CANT FREAKIN' WAIT
Honestly, I dont care for HIMYM and never did, so I basically never watched NPH and didnt expect much. But boy, did he prove me wrong! Loved the whole cast, even the children. A cherry on the top was Catherine O'Hara. Overall, hope for s02.
Violet: Klaus, what's that thing James Browne said? Olaf: I feel good. And a one, and a two and a (Chicken noise). Actors: (CHORUS 1) It's the Count (6 times). Actors: (CHORUS 1) Olaf: The "C" is for Courageous, just another word for brave, "O" oh my god what a very handsome knave, "U" unbelievable good looks and brains and heart, "N" for the knowledge 'cause I'm very very smart, "T" for the talent which is such a crucial factor, when you're handsome and good looking and the world's greatest actor, Actors: (CHORUS 1) Olaf: (CHORUS 2) Actors & Olaf: (CHORUS 1)
I CANNOT WAIT until the second season comes out. SUpposedly the first season gained the proper funding it needed, so it shouldn't take 2 years to make.
I quite enjoyed watching this, some of the writing got quite funny near the end. Little things you could miss, but when you notice them, its like 'wow hehe'

Sindar Clever!
Sindar you're very very smart
Look, I'm sure everything that's happened to you has left an emotional toll, but don't be ridiculous! Count Olaf is a terrible, terrible man!
Tina Belcher god poe is an idiot.
Sindar True very trur
Never in a million years would I have believed that casting Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf would have been one of the most perfect casting decisions on television.
The set design and art direction are superb.

Conspiracy theory: It was Count Olaf in disguise the whole time. There was no Neil Patrick Harris to begin with.
“*but..PLEASE...excuse me as I am foreign man..PLEASE...me and pretty lady has business*” - spoke in a ridiculous fake foreign accent.
everyone agrees that the way Netflix made those freaking sets was like taken exactly the way we saw it in the books.....I was blown away when they got the green from the reptile room the way lemony made it be like in our brains.
This is all grammatically incorrect.
I really respect actors who don't lie about reading books/comics before project.
