    Hello :) I purchased the yoke yesterday after watching your review the other week. And as I set it up today and already flew a couple of graceful air miles, I wanted to drop a word of thanks for your helpful video. Actually, it was one of the best video reviews I've ever seen - so, thanks a lot!

    Even though this is over four years old, it's still the excellent review I have come to expect from you. It's interesting to see how far you've come with your flight simulator setup. Thanks for hanging in there all these years! I, for one, greatly appreciate it!

    Thanks for the comments. I think the modes are for use with the Saitek programming software, so you can switch between three alternative profiles. (Not sure though, as I don't use the Saitek s/w). I will get around to trying FSUIPC one of these days!

    Thanks for the comments. In the C152 I generally use 0.7 zoom, which I think is the default. I vary it somewhat for other aircraft according to the shape of the cockpit, but generally 0.6 or 0.7. This is with 19" monitors and an eye-to-screen distance of 95cm. I also have WideViewAspect=True in the [Display] section of fsx.cfg.

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  11 лет назад +1

    Thank you! Yes, it is interesting to see the setup change, though it's also telling that I still find the original three-screen setup the best compromise to date. I will certainly go P3D2 when it comes out, in the hope of a step up in performance.

    Thanks for the comments, and glad it's a help. I still would like to try the CH Eclipse too - I have yet to see a review of that yoke anywhere, just lots of negative comments about the standard CH yoke.

    I opened the yoke and removed one of the pitch springs, this helps a great deal with making it feel much lighter and allow you to pull out of the click easier :)

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  13 лет назад

    The three-monitor setup is a single forward view as well, it's just wider! You have to zoom out further so you can see the control panel (and set WideViewAspect=True in fsx.cfg to allow this). In other words, using a single monitor is exactly the same, except because the aspect ratio is different you need to use a different zoom level (a.k.a. focal length) to get a useful forward view, and this has implications for how much distortion you see out at the extremes.

  • @AlmostAviation

    Thank you. At the time of this video I was using a Matrox TripleHead2Go. Then I used two GTX460SE cards in SLI, which allowed me to use 'nVidia 2D Surround' to get three screens.
    I now use a single GTX670 card, which can do 2D Surround without SLI. Hope that helps.

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  11 лет назад

    The GTX670 has four ports - DVI-I, DVI-D, HDMI and DP. You can use different combinations of these ports to drive your 3-screen display, using adapters as necessary. I use DVI monitors with the DVI/DVI/HDMI ports.

    Thanks for the comments! Three monitors via Matrox TripleHead2Go (Google it). By the way, I've since ditched it for a 1080p 40" TV, which gives better performance. With the Track IR, it's just as good, or perhaps better.

    Great review, especially liked the comparisons to real-life controls and the lousy "Saitek Solution" (same issue with all their joysticks; delete registry keys, lose the button mapping...)

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  12 лет назад

    The yoke comes with one throttle quadrant with a DIN plug that connects to the body of the yoke. Hence only one USB port is required. Add-on quadrants have a USB connector so if, like me, you want to run an extra quadrant you will need another USB port.

    I don't recall my specific settings but I would guess I was playing with the sensitivities to avoid unintentional abrupt movements around the centre detentes. Having said that, I now know that FSX uses its own non-linear scaling of analogue inputs and it may be that what you see is an artifact of that. I now turn this off (STICK_SENSITIVITY_MODE=0) and use FSUIPC to control my analogue axes. I don't know if this is realistic either, but it's more flexible.

  •  13 лет назад

    Hello Sir!I just want to ask you that there is a trim or some kind of stick on the yoke which can be replace the (rudder)pedals??? 'Cause i haven't got enough money to by the pedals too... so i can use the Yoke to fly in a relastic way without the pedals???

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  14 лет назад

    I have heard of people doctoring their yokes to remove the self-centring action, but I haven't tried this myself. The yoke does centre itself in real life, but in the absence of proper force feedback we need to fake it with springs. I'm sure it could be done with more finesse, but until it is, I think I'll keep my springs...

  • @AlmostAviation

    It's three regular monitors connected to a Matrox TripleHead2Go, which appears to Windows like one very big monitor.

  • @airste172
    @airste172 12 лет назад

    I notice in the video that you have to give the yoke a substantial amount of aileron input for a relatively small amount of response. I fly real 152s and 172s on a fairly regular basis and find that they both respond with much greater sensitivity to yoke inputs.
    Is it possible that you have the simulator settings adjusted for less sensitivity from the controls?

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  15 лет назад

    I can't comment on the X52 as I don't have it. As to whether a joystick or yoke is better, I guess for realism it depends on the aircraft type. Also, while a joystick such as the X52 might be suitable for jet fighters it will not realistically model an aircraft like, say, a Tiger Moth or a glider because they use a long-handled stick that requires full arm movements.
    Having flown real Cessnas I can say that the Saitek yoke gives a realistic feel, subject to the limitations I mentioned here.

  • @salkasalka

    hi, what controller do you recommend for FSX ? to get reallistic turns and climbs, without yoyo effect and clicks effect ?

  • @kcrsradio
    @kcrsradio 11 лет назад

    Cool demo and straightforward commentary about the system. Thank you. One question. You're using FSX in this demo....do you know if it also works with X-Plane or Pro Flight Simulator? I have heard that FSX has frame-rate issues that the other two programs don't have. IS this your experience as well?

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  15 лет назад

    In the real yoke the tension is generated by the displacement of control surfaces in the airstream and the resistance starts off almost undetectably and does not increase linearly. I think the technical term for this is 'rising rate'.
    Maybe an engineer will step in soon and set us all straight!

  • @Franstone
    @Franstone 14 лет назад

    Best review of the Saitek Yoke I've seen yet... Good job.
    I'm still torn though, don't know if I should get the yoke of the Logitech G35 w/ force feedback.

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  11 лет назад

    I expect the yoke will work with anything that supports USB game controllers. Regarding 'frame rate issues' - FSX needs a fast PC, that's all. X-Plane may have better performance, I don't know, but it doesn't have Orbx scenery. PFS is just Flight Gear, which isn't a serious contender.

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  13 лет назад

    I haven't had this yoke since about Easter, but nothing had changed by then as far as I know. Best advice is to go and read the Saitek Pro Flight support forums (saitekforum dot whatever) and see if people are still complaining!

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  15 лет назад

    No, you can assign functions to all the buttons and levers from within FSX or FS9.

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  13 лет назад

    Hi there. No, there is no way with this yoke to control the rudder functions in the absence of pedals. I think the CH Eclipse yoke has this feature with two additional analog 'paddle' controls, although it is a lot more expensive!

  • @AlmostAviation

    If you have lots of money, Elite. If you want a cheap one, CH Products. I have heard that the VR Insight Master is a better consumer-priced yoke but I haven't tried it.

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  15 лет назад

    ...I am not an engineer in any sense, but I am guessing the centre 'bumps' are a consequence of using cheap and relatively string springs that offer a more or less linear tension when extended. This means it's a hard to pull the yoke back through, say, the first 1cm as it is through the 4th cm, or close to full deflection...

  • @Abbemalmsten
    @Abbemalmsten 11 лет назад

    Does it works to fly with tail cam? Can you fly for example B747 or only small planes?

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  11 лет назад

    Not really. You could map yoke buttons to left and right rudder but that wouldn't be much use. Or you could turn on auto-rudder, which would work for most situations. You might want to check out my 'rudder control' video for more about this.

    If you don't want to go through and reset the registry keys, after you get them set up while still in regedit, go to the pane on the left, right click the folder that your in and select export. Next time you need to reset it you can just double click the file that you exported and all the setting should be back.

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  15 лет назад

    I'm using TrackIR 4 to move the view, possibly the best of all Flight Simulator accessories. There's a version 5 available now, so that's probably where to look.

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  13 лет назад

    Can't say for sure. I suppose it depends on how/whether Macs support USB and joysticks / controllers. I would be optimistic. It seems less likely that Saitek would support the Mac, but you shouldn't need their software if MacOS (or whatever it's called) supports joysticks natively.

    Great review!
    I also had the very same yoke and cuadrant.
    One thing i've get to understand is how the "mode1, 2 & 3 works"?
    Can't understand how to configure the buttons properly.
    I use the fsuipc (purchased) and it works like a charm.
    Great review again.!
    :)
    Thx.

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  15 лет назад

    Since two people have said this, I am assuming my use of the word 'click' is the problem. I am describing the self-centring action of the yoke. If you pull the yoke all the way back and then push it slowly all the way forward you cannot do it smoothly because somewhere around the middle of the range there is a 'bump', which is not how the control behaves in real life. This bump may be the balance point where the opposing springs are under equal tension, or it may be achieved some other way...

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  13 лет назад

    Yes. Or you could have independent throttles for a twin-engine, with a single prop lever and automixture. It's all configurable. This is a property of FSX, though, not the Saitek yoke.

  • @AlmostAviation
    @AlmostAviation  15 лет назад

    It's not in the forums, it's under 'support'. Here's the gist of it...
    "To recalibrate in Windows, first remove the USB plug for your controller from the PC.
    Press and hold the Windows key on your keyboard and then press the letter R. This will open the Run box. Type regedit and then click ok.
    The Registry Editor will have a list of folders on the left hand side. Go down into the following folders in order by clicking the + next to the folder name..."

    My saitek yoke is pretty stiff/sticky. How can I solve this?

    • @AlmostAviation
      @AlmostAviation  10 лет назад

      In my experience, sell it on eBay and buy something better! Sorry, but I bought another Saitek yoke since this video and I think the latest ones are rubbish. They use a flawed design for the aileron control that more or less guarantee stickiness. You can check this out by disconnecting the aileron spring and noting how much smoother the pitch action is.

    • @AlmostAviation

      Hi there. Configuration is easy - if you have the right nVidia card (needs to support '2D surround'), all you do is plug in three monitors and run the surround setup from the nVidia Control Panel. It's likely similarly straightforward for ATI Eyefinity cards. (In this video my screens are running off a Matrox TripleHead2Go, which is an old-fashioned solution given the capabilities of modern video cards.)
