One of the greats of the American pop/rock/r&b/country piano scene. As a lifelong piano player with a similar history of classical training/ playing by ear, I remember the solos in Dixie Chicken as a personal "come to Jesus" moment, never forgotten. There are others who have followed (Matt Rollings, Jim Cox, for example) but to me Billy Payne remains the holy grail of these styles. Great to see him interviewed and looking so well!
Bill. I’m a fan since the late ‘70s. Little Feat came and in and out my life throughout my life. Have seen the Feat many times and loved the music each and every time. I’ve managed so for, to get autographs from Fred Tackett, You, Shaun, and Richie. Thanks for the music!!!!
Bill is an institution and surely belongs in one. His stories brought me back to the Alley rehersal hall. It was a rock and roll clubhouse Bill Elkins built from scratch. The motto on thier matchbooks read..."Whatever Works" . Great interview Sandy.
There's something so evocative about Bill's hybrid style of playing. At its heart, it has such an "American" sound to it, the way he moves from New Orleans and Gospel to Aaron Copelandesque progressions and voicings. You can hear it immediately here when he first starts playing. Tore at my heart as a teen and now makes me nostalgic. "Somebody's Leavin'" still guts me.
FEAT AND THE BAND ARE STILL TWO OF MY VERY FAVORITE GROUPS AND THEIR MUSIC IS STILL GREAT MISS THE HELL OUT OF LOWELL I BET YOU DO TOO HE HAD THAT UNFORGETTABLE TALENT. FEATS NEVER DID FAIL ME SAW THEM LIVE LIKE 30 TIMES WAS IN VIRGINIA WHEN WE LOST LOWELL
In 1976 a chick I worked with loaned me “Sailin’ Shoes and “Dixie Chicken”I gave them each a listen and returned them to her. I liked them alright, but I was prog all the way so that was that. Except they must’ve stayed in the back of my mind. A couple years later I had the stereo on a Local FM station that played album oriented rock. “ Waitin for Columbus” started playing and caught my attention. I recognized “All That You Dream” immediately and it was so different from Linda Ronstadt’s version. When “Spanish Moon” started I somehow knew it was Little Feat!!! That song and that album at that time blew me away. Forty eight years later I’m dumbfounded they aren’t in the HOF! I’ve since decided the HOF is music equivalent of high school ‘s year book favorites!! I’ve been fortunate to have met Richie, Fred, and Shaun (in Eureka Springs Arkansas) for Feat Fest 2006! These guys are/ were (RIP Lowel, Richie and Paul) the real deal. The addition of Scott Sharrard and Tony Leonie (‘scuse any spelling mishap) have infused a serious new edge in Feat!! Love you guys….. look forward to seeing you live one more (at least) for a fith time!! C’mon down to Lafayette, LA and light us up!!! I dare you!!!
Enduring legacy absolutely. To have given us such varied and rythmic dysrythmia over so many years. In my top 3 bands and since i was 15. Good to see Bill still a humble and balanced human being. Thanks Sandy.
Not only did Manson want to be a musician , he actually wrote a song the Beach Boys recorded . Not sure it was released. He also lived in Dennis Wilson's house for a time.
@@sandykayepresents-abreatho9146 There is also an album of Charles Manson that has made the rounds. I think they are a bunch of demos and Guns N Roses covered one of them which i think is on their covers album The Spaghetti Incident.
Lowell was gonna do it with or without any of em…. And it would have been just as good either way…. There were 10 guys like Billy when Zappa was “relegating” players cause of this or that….Lowell was a once in a 1000 year talent…. Everyone else was just along for the ride…still are… Lowell was like Jerry…. Their star was so bright it sustains musicians and families for lifetimes…. ❤
