The worst lyrics weren't aknowledged, it's the Jump In The Fire demo. The Scorpion is a song I've been listening to all month man.
"Sitting in my room with my head in my hands
I just can't seem to move
I've gotta get up, get out, get high
Get back in the groove
There's a job to be done and I'm the one
You people chose to do it
Now I tight up my belt and see you are felt
It's time to get your way
[Chorus]
So come on
Jump in the fire
So come on
Jump in the fire
[Verse 2]
Moving my hips in a circular way
Just forward a bit
Pull your body into my waist
And feel how good it fits
And there's a job to be done and I'm the one
You people chose to do it
Now I take off my pants, see you chained to get down
It's your turn to wait"
These are the lyrics from Jump In The Fire demo
The Unforgiven is James sounding like a melodramatic puss. "Whooooaaaoooooo" or whatever the fuck that was. Ugh. And the Conan the Barbarian lyrics don't make all of us happy. The shit sounds forced. Yeah, I get it, his life felt forced so that part plays to the dynamic. I just don't like the song. I pick Master of Puppets over Black Album all day long.
@@BusinessZeus😂🤣 this is pure comedy
@@dissected731verse 2 won grammies!
Holy shit, THE SCORPION - amaaaaaazing choice for Megadeth lyrics! That's a terrific deep cut
Why say lot word when few word do trick
I literally started reading this as “Why say a lot of words when few words do the trick” I had to reread to see that it wasnt all the words but made me think… why use lot words when few word do trick
@@DiscordCurse my man!
To see world??
For metallica, I might honestly unironically choose "to live is to die" as their song with the best lyrics. Just one short stanza yet it says so much. And that on top of being an amazing tribute to Cliff.
Apart from that, Dyers Eve has some of my favorite metallica lyrics!
Dyer's Eve is teenage angst done right!
Fade To Black is another good one
The Unforgiven was one of the songs that was important for me in 1993, when I was a 12-13 year old boy, a traumatized by war refugee child, while my homeland of Bosnia and Herzegovina was being destroyed and members of my family and friends were being killed, and the society was being destroyed. The song still makes me cry. Because it speaks to me.
Trey, you introduced me to my favorite Megadeth song with this video. Thank you for showing me “The Scorpion” man 🤘
Silent Planet, Sleep Token and Thrice are some bands that have phenomenal lyrics, imo. It would be awesome if any of those bands were considered if this becomes a series. 🤞
Surprised cradle of filth wasn’t mentioned on this. Dani filth creates top tier metal poetry
Also one of the best, I’ll get him in the next one if I do it
Hearing all of the lyrics clearly on TBDM song probably goes to show that he genuinely cared about what he was putting across with his lyrics. Wish more vocalists would put more effort into being intelligible, at least for most of the time. Also seems that there's something that goes through all of the good lyrics: the right perspective (1st, 2nd or 3rd) for it, the right flow and execution order for each line and ordering within each line, and just generally sounding pleasant to the ear. It's pretty hard to be motivated to get into a lyric when it's not pleasant in the first place even before getting any meaning from it yet. Great vid
This was amazing, more!
I never heard of The Black Dahlia Murder before but wooow those lyrics went harder and were more meaningful than some band's entire albums. I should give them a proper listen.
On another note, another band that I think to have some really great lyrics is Protest The Hero. The lyrics on Kezia are absolutely poetic
Black Dahlia is one of my all time favorites. Love PTH too
While I don't agree The Black Dahlia Murder has the best lyrics in metal scene some of their lyrics are way to good. ruclips.net/video/_2VKGewmtEY/видео.html makes me depressed everytime i hear it
Next week’s songwriting contest is gonna have 20 death metal bands with “modulistic” in their name.
Trey, have you listened to Silent Planet? Their vocalist, Garrett Russell is one of the absolute best lyricists in the metal scene right now - lots of really poetic, emotional and introspective lyrics. Some of the lyrics even have footnotes to reference pieces of literature. Also, Vessel from Sleep Token has some pretty profound and interesting lyrics as well. I loved this video! It would be cool if it became a series. I have a ton of room for improvement, but I feel inspired to write after this.
Loved this but would love to hear more version of you singing the lyrics
Great Video, Trey 🤘🏻
awesome video, you can do part 2 of it with bands like BFMV, A7x etc.
Your Analysis on Death Panorama's lyrics reminded me a song by Hubert-Félix Thiefaine, En Remontant le Fleuve (Going up the river). For me it has the best lyrics about this moment of death. The song isn't heavy, but the lyrics are brutally building up the heaviest atmosphere possible, using all sorts of metaphors. It's not that the atmosphere is heavy, the night spreads drunk on its own humidity. The bodies are not still and silent, they are exhausted upon the moss resembling the worn and broken marbles of the necropolises. It's so poetic and raw, and it's very well paired with his dark vocal tone. It's a masterclass
My personal favorite lyrics in all of metal are from Bad Omen's "Mercy"
"You can give sight to the blind, but you can't force them to see
you can take us back in time, but it wouldn't change a thing
if god came down from his kingdom, he came down from his throne
and we asked him if he'd take us back, he would surely tell us no"
For Metallica i would also point out the god that faileld. My favorite Metallica song
That's a jam, but do you think it has great lyrics or is it just your favorite song?
@@treyxaviermusic I personally think the lyrics are amazing and Hetfield is talking bout his mother dying cause she wouldn't accept medicine. I think it's amazing hits hard every time
@@treyxaviermusicthe lyrics had so much EMOTION in it. Give it another listen!
Also from the Black Album, Holier Than Thou has _amazing_ lyrics. "It's not who you are, it's who you know / Others' lives are the basis of your own / Burn your bridges and build them back with wealth / Judge not, lest ye be judged yourself" - full of double meanings and symbolism, yet immediately understandable. Genius, in my book.
@@cobrasys I feel like most of the black album has great lyrics
"Sparkly Dolphin Diary"... Not sure if that needs to be the name of my next band or just incorporated into some lyrics but either way it's gold. Sparkly gold perhaps. ❤
If you do another one of these I would love to see System of a Down on here, they have so many good lyrics from songs like Chop Suey!, BYOB, Aerials, Toxicity, Lost In Hollywood, Protect the Land, Soldier Side, etc. (or really anything from their discography), and like what you were saying for BDM I wouldn't say that they have any bad lyrics per say but mainly just a _lot_ of really weird shit mainly on their first album but one of my personal favourites is the bridge from Vicinity of Obscenity (the "Do we all learn defeat from the whores with bad feet?" part). It makes no fucking sense whatsoever but it's still absolutely hilarious, lyrical genius from Daron and Serj on full display
Seconded. SOAD has some absolute banging lyrics.
awesome video!
My favourite Metallica lyric has to be the first verse and chorus of Disposable Heroes. I'm like incredibly biased for this song and it's the first metal song I ever listened to
Slayer - best lyric is in Dead Skin Mask...
Describing the collection of Ed Gein's murder victims that he kept in his home...
"All placid faces in lifeless pageant"
6 words evokes so much true horror
That’s a really good one too
@@treyxaviermusic thanks Trey. You're awesome
Got choked up when you read Trevor's lyrics 🥹❤️
YESS, finally some recognition for The Scorpion! I was obsessed with that song when the album came out (actually, the whole album, but definitely mostly this song) and was ranting to my friend about it, but she was so set on Megadeth being a terrible band (we were 15, and she was a pure Metallica fan), and true story, years and years later, she texted me and was like...damn sis, you were right! Having discovered it like a full decade later and I was so proud of her
Latent Perception by Before I Turn has to be one of my favorites.
"With a knife in my hand, my heart will be crossed. An evil heretic will find his life lost. Your name on my wrist I start to emboss. Always and forever my love will be dossed."
Hits so fucking hard when you read the story of the album.
I'd be curious to see what your take on Dream Theater lyrics are. Other DT fans I see tend to talk shit about their lyrics, but I tend to like most of what they put out. Plus, they've had quite a few different lyricists, so it'd be interesting to see which ones you favour.
If I had to pick my candidates for favourites and least favourites, I'd probably say A Change of Seasons, At Wit's End, Misunderstood, or Far From Heaven. My least favourite is probably the Full Circle section of Octavarium, which is just crammed full of random 70s references. If you do another vid like this, I'd be interested to see which two you pick!
Finally! Someone else appreciates The Scorpion. It has one of the best choruses the band has ever written. Megadeth is my personal favorite band and The System Has Failed, is one of my favorite albums of theirs. It kicks sooooo much ass. Another solid pick would’ve been “Head Crusher” from Endgame. Great video as always Trey.
The best slayer lyrics are at the end of Catalyst. Their groove metal stuff might not be great, but that last run of lyrics is pure gold.
Christ Illusion is a super solid album
I also LOVE a ton of the lyrics on Load.
My wife loves that Am I Salad
on the Hardwired album
The world is always a huge mess, but it's even worse without Trevor Strnad. He'll always be a legend - masterful lyrics, crushing vocals and especially a wonderful person overall.
Dude, that unforgiven singing..chefs kiss.
Should be a series.
I would love to learn how to actually write lyrics, but I still can't even write basic sentences, so I guess I need to learn the language first...
I want to see you breakdown King Diamond and Meshuggah's lyrics.
I think the best lyrics or hell even songs in metal is CKY 96 quite bitter beings and Escape from Hellview. They're such good stories
I come back to this video every now and then just to appreciate the Black Dahlia part. Trevor was a freaking Titan.
It's off the table😂
Great video. I don’t know enough metal band lyrics, but I know I have written quite a few cringe lyrics 😂
Never trust a fart
@@tophertaylor68 They're sneaky little fuckers...!!
Great video. i will definatlly listen more to Black Dhalia Murders lyrics more, but if you want poetic, meaningfull lyrics, you have to listen to Mgla's excersises in futillity album.
I'll check it out!
If you ever get a chance, check out Demon Hunter. Songs like "I will fail you", "The last one alive", "Fear is not my guide", "Infected", etc
Thank you for the props for Trevor
Unholy inversion of hope, twisting the faith of the meek into hate
I mean, just that line is a whole serie that I wanna watch for 5 seasons. RIP Trevor
One of the best lines in anything ever
I wonder what is your opinion about Tool in terms of lyrics? For me Maynard is one of the best lyricist in the genre. My personal favoutite work of him are the lyrics from Wings for Marie Pt.2, always gives me chills.
Great video btw, you're awesome!
Love Pantera, but easily the most cringe lyric is Strength by Strength:
There’s nothing!
No education, no family line!
😂
Please do Protest the hero for one of these. Back when their bass player did the lyrics they are some if the best. Love the lyrics to their song spoils.
Yes!! I'll add another one here: C'est La Vie also has extremely clever lyrics.
I would say good mourning/black friday and looking down the cross are daves best lyrical work both are so catchy but meaningful and evil .
This shall be spicy
Trevor truly was the GOAT
Would Love to See a Video about Testament or Killswitch Engage....make a series of these kind of Videos...great content
-Some how I had never considered the full depth of the lyrics in The Unforgiven.
-The Scorpion is indeed a killer song. Its surprising to me that Kerry wrote Piece by Piece. It is for sure his best.
-I think Trevor definitely took a page out of Dani Filths playbook in regards to storytelling and poetic lyrical imagery.
My favorite Slayer lyrics are Dead Skin Mask and Season in the Abyss. I love the chorus from both.
Alright. I'm with you on most of the Megadeth stuff, but I wanna defend Take No Prisoners a bit here. That wasn't really meant to be lyrically neat. It was meant to sound cool when people scream it back live.
I'd also argue that Supercollider is worse:
On the high road (on the high road)
I will take you higher (I will take you higher)
'Til the world explodes ('til the world explodes)
Just like a super collider (like a super collider)
I mean, at least that has an interesting rhyme scheme and a small bit of clever wordplay. And they could have achieved what you described in terms of a call and response without it being baaaaaad hahaha
@@treyxaviermusic well, we can also blame the H. 🤣
lol you used the battlefield trailer clip for the eject edit
I'd like to see your takes on Iron Maiden lyrics. They also run the gamut of incredible to incredibly shitty, but I'm curious which ones you'd pick from them. Same with Black Sabbath and Dio, actually.
I am the table, they are the sofa, I am the cabinet, koo koo ka-choo.
Megadeep cut, great pull
My favourite slayer lyric is the chorus of dead skin mask! Dance with the dead in my dreams, listen to their hallowed screams
All my internet humor aside, as a wannabe poet who sometimes gets lost in the meter of speech, this approach to lyricism excites me. I will definitely be paying more attention than just for entertainment this round.
Agree with a lot of this, EXCEPT, the absolute best Slayer lyric is during that fucking chunky riff in Angel of Death before the solo
I have to disagree...I think the worst Megadeth lyric is "The U.N. is right, you can't be any more un"
Not sure how I missed that one hahaha
I actually love those lyrics lol. Are they dumb? Yes. But Dave sings them with so much gusto that they kind of turn into a "so bad that they're good" deal.
I'm surprised you haven't mentioned Machine Head yet in any videos, since they have some albums I would consider pinnacle heavy metal.
Opeth is definitely missing here and would've been a great addition, Faith in Others and Dirge for November have some truly bone harrowing lyrics, meanwhile mikael akerfeldt has said himself that those first few albums are just "black metal nonsense"
Thanks for reminding me Trevor was gone 😩😭
This content is killer 😊
I would love blind guardian or children of bodom in part 2
dang good vidya
I was on board with Unforgiven... Not so much with the Megadeth song lol those were lame as fuck.. Holy Wars first section/verse are his best lyrics.. Also, the first verse of Ashes in Your Mouth.. "Melting down all metals, turning plows and shears to swords
Shun words of the bible, we need implements of war
Chalk lines and red puddles of those who have been slain..."
Check out BURDEN CALLED GOD
Piece by Piece is one of my favourite Slayer songs, but the lyrics that I always liked best were:
You have no choice of life or death
My face you will not see
I'll rip your flesh till there's no breath
Dismembered destiny
Especially at the end when Tom sings it fast.
I didn't talk about it in this video because it was already getting long, but I LOVE that he double times it, it's such a weird choice but it works so well to crank up the intensity. I kinda hate the death/breath, that's a forbidden rhyme for me but they get a pass because it's like 37 years ago hahaha
@@treyxaviermusic "forbidden rhyme" hahah, I love it!
My most "forbidden rhyme" is fire/desire. OMG I hate it so much. I'm the primary songwriter for my band and I would NEVER EVER rhyme those two words with each other, even if the context of the song was screaming for it. I'd throw the lyrics in the bin and start over, lol
Yeah it's at the top of a long list I put in the course, that's definitely the worst one
Miasma is the best black dahlia album and we’re in a fight now.
You get to be wrong about one thing, and this is it
You spelled Nocturnal wrong
I dunno I like Motorbreath's lyrics for what they are, just a snapshot of that young naive attitude they had back then. Also modulistic could just be modular + sadistic
Dave Mustaine has written copious amounts of incredible bullshit lyrics over the course of his career. But then again, he's also responsible for some of the most brilliant stuff ever: "What do you mean, I hurt your feelings? I didn't know you had any feelings. What do you mean, I ain't kind? I'm just not your kind." That is really punk rock, ver dry, direct and pointed and hilarious, but still witty. I wish metal lyrics were generally more direct and "street". Too many bands hide behind vapid allegories, methaphors, verbiage and bullshit escapism.
Poor Anthrax 😢 lol
I really like the lyrics by the band Empty Graves, check them out if you haven't
I'm surprised Metallica's Just A Bullet Away didn't make it in there or anything from St. Anger.
st anger has pretty good and personal lyrics if you exclude Some Kind of Monster and Invisible Kid.
do Wintersun
Cant believe someone else thinks the scorpion is the best megadeth song!!! I thought I was alone!!!
Dude, how did you miss crush them.
Take No Prisoners lyrics:
War is peace sure man
A retreat for the damned
A playground for the demented
A heaven for those who walk this world
Bereft of heart and soul
You chose this song as an example of bad Megadeth lyrics? What nonsense!
You really aren't going to bring Dani Filth's lyrics into this? Yes, Trevor was great, but Dani is on an immortal level, lyrically.
Next episode for sure
In Poland we say SLAYER KURWA and I think it's beautiful ❤
Have to hard disagree on take no prisoners - this is written with audience participation in mind and just reading the lyrics without the musical context can make any lyric sound a bit cringe.
If you want a cringe megadeth lyric, look no further than Mechanix.
I think it’s worse with the music, that’s where you can hear the terrible syllable stress against the beat. You can write something with audience participation that doesn’t suck, and in fact he could have even used all the same lyrics with a different rhythmic phrasing so that it wasn’t so lame
@@treyxaviermusic maybe, but I find the syllabic syncopation to not be a deal breaker- it is a song, after all, and we don't always pronounce words when we speak the same as when we sing. By the same token, free falling is silly because no one says freeeeeeeeeee. Just one person's opinion, I know, and I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
Megadeath is basically using the story of the Scopion and the Frog....as inspiration...
Jinjer has many awesome lyrics.
Dude as far as "Take No Prisoners", you're completely wrong. Take no Prisoners! Take no shit!!!!
that's not the part of the song that sucks
pig destroyer is another band with good lyrics and deathspell omega too! hmm even mgla is pretty good
Dude I don't know most of the lyrics to any of the metal songs I know how to play on guitar LOL
I mean that’s a pretty typical guitar player problem, you’re not alone
@@treyxaviermusic 🤩
Is there a better lyricist than Keith Buckley??? Well, maybe... but he's gotta be up there, top 5 at least.
I haven't looked closely at any of his, I will now though
@@treyxaviermusic “Thing with feathers” is up there. Not too many bad ones TBH. There’s a reason so many people get tattoos of his lyrics.
alt Worst Megadeth Lyric: "TASTE ME!" -Poison Was the Cure
Break down falling in reverse drugs
Or we could just ignore Falling in Reverse altogether
Yup. Pure poetry.
@@MojoStrummer or we could acknowledge that falling in reverse, bring me, and spiritbox are ones of the only that are actually doing something innovative and interesting.
@@mercifulldestruction6428 I like Spiritbox, but I think Falling in Reverse is cringe music and Radke is not someone we should be supporting financially.
@@MojoStrummer fir is not cringe and is objectively the best one on the list. Ronnie like him or not is a goated vocalist who can pull off any style of vocal performance and his lyrics are amazing. I also think his story is inspiring
Trevor Strnad is bae
Lyrically, can there *ever* be a good song about rocking?
Death
Children of bodom
Opeth
Carcass
Necrophagist
Morbid Angel
Black Crown Initiate
System of a Down
Mastodon
Static X
Nevermore
Twelve Foot Ninja
11:02 techincally all words are made up :)
I have also made up my own words for some songs that doesnt really exist in any dictionaries but that's just how langauge develops over time :)
Yes this is very true, I wish I had the time to go into this in a video but nobody would watch that hahaha
@@treyxaviermusic I will say modulistic is a perfectly cromulent word. (Just looked it up and cromulent was officially added as a real word in the mirriam-webster dictionary last month[september2023])
Say what you will about Cradle of Filth, Dani's lyrics have legitimate literary value to them.
What I will say about them is that they’re fucking awesome
For Megadeths worst lyrics I kind of expected it to be the mechanix or something, but I agree take no prisoners isn’t too good lol
Mechanix is definitely worse than Take No Prisoners, lyric-wise. It's like an edgy 13-year-old wrote those lyrics.
I have to disagree I loved Hit The Lights I also understand that when I was listening to it it was very first coming out and it made a huge difference at that time. I understand that the younger generation does not get it because they weren't a part of it so I'm not talking trash about you in any way but again I disagree. But good job on the episode but
I think you’re conflating liking the song with it having good lyrics, which aren’t the same things. Its status in your life has a lot of value for you personally, which is the point of music. But the lyrics are truly bad and dumb. Doesn’t mean you can’t like them, I like plenty of stuff that’s bad and dumb.
Holy shit, hearing Trey sing it actually made Megadeth listenable and enjoyable!
"My lifestyle determines my death style." Is what I always considered one of the dumbest metallicaa lyrics.
Everything you've said in this video, I completely disagree with... except for "The Black Dahlia Murder"
